        6-shogaol suppresses oxidative damage in L6 muscle cells

        Ginger (Zingiber Officinale Roscoe) has been known reduce muscle pain after exercise, and 6-shogaol {(E)-1-(4- Hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)dec-4-en-3-one)} is the major essential oil contained in ginger. In this study, the protective effect of 6-shogaol on L6 muscle cells against oxidative damage was measured. 6-shagol inhibited the damage of L6 cell induced by H2O2, and allowed the increase in mRNA and protein expression levels of intracellular HO-1 and NRF2. 6-shogaol also reduced the production of intracellular ROS. These results suggested that 6-shagol effectively inhibits oxidative damage of skeletal muscle cell.

        Berberine Inhibited Radioresistant Effects and Enhanced Anti-Tumor Effects in the Irradiated-Human Prostate Cancer Cells

        The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying enhanced radiosensitivity to $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}$-irradiation in human prostate PC-3 cells pretreated with berberine. The cytotoxic effect of the combination of berberine and irradiation was superior to that of berberine or irradiation alone. Cell death and Apoptosis increased significantly with the combination of berberine and irradiation. Additionally, ROS generation was elevated by berberine with or without irradiation. The antioxidant NAC inhibited berberine and radiation-induced cell death. Bax, caspase-3, p53, p38, and JNK activation increased, but activation of Bcl-2, ERK, and HO-1 decreased with berberine treatment with or without irradiation. Berberine inhibited the anti-apoptotic signal pathway involving the activation of the HO-1/NF-${\kappa}B$-mediated survival pathway, which prevents radiation-induced cell death. Our data demonstrate that berberine inhibited the radioresistant effects and enhanced the radiosensitivity effects in human prostate cancer cells via the MAPK/caspase-3 and ROS pathways.

        Bucillamine prevents cisplatin-induced ototoxicity through induction of glutathione and antioxidant genes

        <P>Bucillamine is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This study investigated the protective effects of bucillamine against cisplatin-induced damage in auditory cells, the organ of Corti from postnatal rats (P2) and adult Balb/C mice. Cisplatin increases the catalytic activity of caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteases and the production of free radicals, which were significantly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine. Bucillamine induces the intranuclear translocation of Nrf2 and thereby increases the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GSS), which further induces intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). However, knockdown studies of HO-1 and SOD2 suggest that the protective effect of bucillamine against cisplatin is independent of the enzymatic activity of HO-1 and SOD. Furthermore, pretreatment with bucillamine protects sensory hair cells on organ of Corti explants from cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity concomitantly with inhibition of caspase-3 activation. The auditory-brainstem-evoked response of cisplatin-injected mice shows marked increases in hearing threshold shifts, which was markedly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine <I>in vivo</I>. Taken together, bucillamine protects sensory hair cells from cisplatin through a scavenging effect on itself, as well as the induction of intracellular GSH.</P>

        M/G/c 대기행렬시스템의 대기고객수 분석에 대한 근사법

        In this paper, we propose an approximation analysis for the system size distribution of the M/C/c system which is transform-free. At first, we borrow the system size distribution from the Markovian service models and then introduce a newly defined parameter in place of traffic intensity. In this step, we find the distribution of the number of customers up to c. Next, we concentrate on each waiting space of the queue separately, rather than consider the entire queue as a whole. The, according to the system state of the arrival epoch, we induce the probability distribution of the system size recursively. We discuss the effectiveness of this approximation method by comparing with simulation for the mean system size.

        적정 학교규모의 탐색 : 미국의 사례와 우리의 제안

        해방 이후 우리 사회의 산업화와 경제발전의 과정에서 대도시로의 인구이동, 특히 수도권지역의 인구 밀집으로 인하여 대도시지역에서는 과밀학급, 과대학교의 문제가 우리 교육의 중요한 문제로 대두되고 있는 실정이다. 최근 정부는 과밀학급 해소를 위하여 막대한 예산을 투입하여 학급을 증설하고 학급당 학생 수를 최대 35명 이내로 줄이기 위한 노력에 착수했지만, 대도시에서의 학교부지 확보의 어려움으로 인해 기존 학교 내에 학급을 증설하다보니 학교의 단위 규모가 점점 커지게 되고, 이제 콩나물교실로 비유되는 다인수 학급의 문제만이 아니라 콩나물 운동장으로 불리는 과대학교가 문제가 되는 실정이다. 그러나 지금까지 적정 학급규모에 대한 연구와 논의는 일부 이루어지고 있으나, 적정 학교규모에 대해서는 별로 아이디어들을 가지고 있지 못한 것이 사실이다. 본 논문에서는 적정 학교규모를 탐색하기 위하여 선진국의 모범적 사례라고 할 수 있는 미국의 현황을 분석하여 보고자 한다. 그리고 이를 우리 나라의 현황에 비추어 보고, 현재의 상황에서 우리가 추구할 수 있는 적정 학교규모를 제안하고자 하였다. 미국의 경우 적정 학교규모는 대체로 초등학교는 300-400명, 중학교는 300-600명, 그리고 고등학교는 400-800명 선으로 제안되었다. 그러나 우리 나라의 현실을 감안할 때 적정 학교규모로는 학급당 35명을 기준으로 하여 한 학년 당 초등학교 3-4학급, 중학교 7-9학급, 그리고 고등학교 8-10학급을 제안하였으며, 최대 학교규모로는 초등학교는 한 학년 당 6학급, 중학교는 10학급, 그리고 고등학교는 13학급을 제시하였다. Since the beginning of modern education system, we have been trying to expand the educational opportunities for more people in sacrificing the quality of education. As a result, big classrooms and large schools in urban areas have become the hottest problem and issue in our education. Some of the researches have tried to find optimum class size for better education, but rare about school size yet. According to the available research conducted in USA on school size and its relationship to student achievement, the large majority of studies indicates that smaller is better. According to this line, many countries in the world are trying to downsize the schools for better education. In this study, the average statistics on school size in USA and Korea are compared. Some specific cases, for example Texas and North Carolina for USA, and Incheon Metropolitan City for Korea, are analyzed concretely in order to extract an idea of optimum school size. The average school size in USA is around 700 students in a school located in big cities. And many academic researches suggest that the most effective school size is 600-900 students in a school. But in Korea, most schools in metropolitan cities have more than 1,000 students. Taken together and considering our current situations, this research suggests three concepts on school size: ideal size, optimum size, maximum size. And also suggests 18-24 classrooms (630-840 students) in a school for elementary schools, 21-27 classrooms (735-945 students) for junior high schools, and 24-30 classrooms (840-1050 students) for senior high schools as optimum school size.

        A yellow pigment producing mutant Monascus sp. Y7 was derived from KCCM 11832 stram(Monascus anka Nakazawa et Sato IFO 4478) by natural selection, UV irradiation and MNNG(N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidme) treatment. The mutant produced only yellow pigment extraceilularly unlike its parents. Its productivity of yellow pigment was 2.2 times high than that of parents. Produced yellow pigment showed characteristics of maximum adsorption at 373nm and dissolved in polar solvent like as water and ethanol.

        This paper proposes a modified deadbeat controlled-PWM inverter system for the alternative energy. The proposed PWM system utilizes the instantaneous and real time control scheme. Two-pulse PWM switching pattern is used to increase the fundamental component of the output voltage. It was verified through simulation and experiments that the proposed control scheme provided an excellent transient response, increased output voltage amplitude and accurate referance waveform tracking. In this paper, proposed algorithm is computed by the DSP(Digital Signal Processor: TMS320C25) and realized by IGBTs for the high frequency switching. Also PWM generating circuit is simplified by replacing hardware with software.
