        Objective : As the average lifespan of human increases, osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related fractures have become major health care problems. Despite recent advances in medical treatment, few studies have assessed the recognition of osteoporosis in general adults. This study examined the recognition of osteoporosis and analyzed the relating factors. Method : A population-based sample of 1086 adults in Asan-city, Korea was investigated with questionnaires and height, weight, Information regarding the general characteristics(gender, age, economic state), lifestylef exercise, smoking, alcohol),medical history(progestin, GH, steroid, calcitonin, PTH), demographic parameter, obesity, stress, and family history was collected through an interview using a structural questionnaire. The level of obesity was measured by the body mass index(BMI). BMD(Bone mineral density) at the lumbar spine and femoral neck was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Osteoporosis was considered to be T-score below -2.5. Results : The prevalence of osteoporosis increased progressively with age, decreased with BMI and predominant in women by the result of x^(2) -test, T-test. Age, weight, BMI were significantly correlated with osteoporosis by the result of Pearson correlation ana1ysis(P<0.05). And age, gender, BMI, family history of osteoporosis were proved to be significant risk factors of osteoporosis by the result of multiple logistic regression(P<0.05). Conclusion : These results suggest that age, gender, BMI might be the most important risk factors of osteoporosis. And the history taking about family history of osteoporosis is helpful for diagnosing osteoporosis.

        In this paper, a digital oscilloscope is implemented using a C54x DSk with PC. This digital oscilloscope has some basic measurement functions with a capability to change Volt/Div and Time/Div as well as to set appropriate trigger level automatically. Also several stored waveforms and current input waveform can be displayed simultaneously. Experimental results show that our approaches are versatile and cost-effective particularly in educational installment.

        LaMnO₃형 페롭스카이트 산화물에서 입자상물질의 촉매연소반응

        We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and O₂ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the LaMnO₃ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs>K>Na. For the La_(i_x)Cs_(X)MnO₃ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x> 0.3. For the La_(0.8)Cs_(0.2)MnO₃ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of O₂ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with O₂ concentration >0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

        Lidocaine, Thrombin, Epinephrine 의 항균효과

        목적 : 기관지내시경 검사에서 흔히 사용되는 국소마취제인 lidocaine과 내시경시 지혈목적으로 사용되는 thrombin과 epinephrine이 각종 균주에 미치는 항균효과에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 재료 및 방법 : 균주는 가톨릭대학교 성모병원에서 2004년 3월부터 2004년 9월까지 임상검체 에서 동정된 S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa 각각 42, 42, 42, 43주를 대상으로 하였다. Lidocaine, thrombin, epinephrine 감수성 검사는 National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS, 2002)의 기준에 따랐다. 결과 : Lidocaine은 S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa에서 MIC_(50), MIC_(90) 모두 20,000 ㎍/mL 이었다. K. pneumoniae는 각각 10,000 ㎍/mL이었다. Thrombin은 S. aureus와 P. aeruginosa에서 MIC50 500 lU/mL 과 MIC_(90) 500 IU/mL 이상이었고, K. pneumoniae에서는 MIC_(50)과 MIC_(90)이 모두 500 lU/mL이상이었으나 S. pneumoniae에서는 MIC_(50)과 MIC_(90)은 125 IU/mL이었다. Epinephrine은 K. pneumoniae, S. pneumoniae에 대한 MIC_(50), MIC_(90)가 모두 >500 ㎍/mL이었고, S. aureus와 P. aeruginosa에 대한 MIC_(50), MIC_(90)가 모두 500 ㎍/mL이었다. 결론 : 기관지 내시경 검사에서 흔히 쓰이는 lidocaine, thrombin, epinephrine 등의 약제들이 호흡기 질환의 흔한 병원균인 S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa 균주들에 대해 항균 효과가 있을 수 있어 세균배양검사에 영향을 미칠 수 있겠다. Background : We performed this stody to find out about antimicrobial effect of lidocaine which is commonly used local anesthetic, and thrombin and epinephrine used for hemostasis during bronchoscopic procedures. Materials and Methods : The microorganisms that were cultured from specimens obtained during bronchoscopy were Staphylococcus aureus (n=42), Streptococcus pneumoniae (n=42), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=42), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=43) collected from St. Mary's Hospital, from March to Sep 2004 were used for susceptibity testing. Susceptibility to lidocaine, thrombin, and epinephrine were tested according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. Result : MIC_(50) and MIC_(90) of lidocaine for S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa were all 20,000 ㎍/mL and that for K. pneumoniae were 10,000 ㎍/mL. MIC_(50) and MIC_(90) of thrombin for both S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was 500 IU/mL and above 500 IU/mL, respectively; that for K. pneumoniae were all above 500 IU/mL and for S. pneumoniae they were 125 IU/mL, MIC_(50) and MIC_(90) of epinephrine for K. pneumoniae and S. pneumoniae were above 500 ㎍/mL; that for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were 500 ㎍/mL. Conclusion : We observed possible antimicrobial effect of lidocaine, thrombin, and epinephrine in vitro against pathogens such as S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, which are common respiratory microorganisms. The use of these agants could affect the result of bacterial culture.

        The local density of states of bulk Si is calculated by using the tight-binding method and the recursion method. The matrix elements of the Hamiltonian are obtained from the calculation using the exponentially decaying orbitals with an empirical pseudopotential Hamiltonian and the calculation using empirical tight-binding approaches.

      • Improved spinal fusion efficacy by long-term delivery of bone morphogenetic protein-2 in a rabbit model

        <P><B>Background and purpose</B></P><P> Various new delivery systems for recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) have been introduced to improve its efficacy in osteogenesis. Of these, we have previously developed heparin-conjugated PLGA nanospheres (HCPN) as a long-term delivery system for BMP-2. In vitro studies have shown that the BMP-2 long-term delivery system enhances the level of bone formation. However, the long-term effects of BMP-2 on spinal fusion have not been assessed. Therefore, we now tested the hypothesis that the long-term delivery of BMP-2 using HCPN improves spinal fusion compared to short-term delivery in a rabbit fusion model.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P> 24 adult New Zealand White rabbits underwent posterolateral fusion (6 animals in 4 groups). The autograft group received an autologous iliac chip bone graft as a positive control. The BMP-2-PN group received rhBMP-2 (20 μg per implant) and PLGA nanospheres (PN) suspended in fibrin gel, and served as a short-term release group. The HCPN group received HCPN suspended in fibrin gel without BMP-2 as a negative control. The BMP-2-HCPN group received rhBMP-2 (20 μg per implant)-bound HCPN suspended in fibrin gel and served as a long-term release group. All animals were killed 12 weeks after surgery. Manual palpation, axial tensile tests, radiography, and histological evaluations were then performed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P> The spinal fusion rate and Young's modulus of the fusion mass were better in the BMP-2 long-term delivery group than in the short-term delivery group at an equivalent dose. However, the outcome of the long-term delivery was inferior to that of the autograft group.</P><P><B>Interpretation</B></P><P> The HCPN system showed potential as an effective carrier that might improve the osteogenic efficacy of BMP-2 for spinal fusion.</P>

      • Proteogenomic characterization of antimicrobial resistance in extensively drug-resistant <i>Acinetobacter baumannii</i> DU202

        <P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>To determine the genomic sequence of extensively drug-resistant <I>Acinetobacter baumannii</I> DU202 and to perform proteomic characterization of antibiotic resistance in this strain using genome data.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>The genome sequence of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202 was determined using the Hi-Seq 2000 system and comparative analysis was performed to determine the unique characteristics of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202. Previous proteomic results from the cell wall membrane fraction by one-dimensional electrophoresis and liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry analysis (1DE-LC-MS/MS), using the <I>A. baumannii</I> ATCC 17978 genome as a reference, were reanalysed to elucidate the resistance mechanisms of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202 using strain-specific genome data. Additional proteomic data from the cytosolic fraction were also analysed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The genome of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202 consists of 3660 genes and is most closely related to the Korean <I>A. baumannii</I> 1656-2 strain. More than 144 resistance genes were annotated in the <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202 genome, of which 72 that encoded proteins associated with antibiotic resistance were identified in the proteomic analysis of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202 cultured in tetracycline, imipenem and Luria–Bertani broth (control) medium. Strong induction of β-lactamases, a multidrug resistance efflux pump and resistance–nodulation–cell division (RND) multidrug efflux proteins was found to be important in the antibiotic resistance responses of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Combining genomic and proteomic methods provided comprehensive information about the unique antibiotic resistance responses of <I>A. baumannii</I> DU202.</P>

        Genomic characterization of extensively drug-resistant <i>Acinetobacter baumannii</i> strain, KAB03 belonging to ST451 from Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) <I>Acinetobacter baumannii</I> strains have emerged rapidly worldwide. The antibiotic resistance characteristics of XDR <I>A. baumannii</I> strains show regional differences; therefore, it is necessary to analyze both genomic and proteomic characteristics of emerging XDR <I>A. baumannii</I> clinical strains isolated in Korea to elucidate their multidrug resistance. Here, we isolated new sequence type of XDR <I>A. baumannii</I> clinical strain (KAB03) from Korean hospitals and performed comprehensive genome analyses. The strain belongs to new sequence type, ST451. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis with other types of <I>A. baumannii</I> strains revealed that KAB03 has unique SNP pattern in the regions of <I>gyrB</I> and <I>gpi</I> of MLST profiles. <I>A. baumannii</I> KAB03 harbours three antibiotic resistance islands (AbGRI1, 2, and 3). AbGRI1 harbours two copies of Tn<I>2006</I> containing <I>bla</I> <SUB>OXA-23</SUB>, which play an important role in antibiotic resistance. AbGRI2 possesses aminoglycoside resistant gene <I>aph(3′)-Ic</I> and class A β-lactamase <I>bla</I> <SUB>TEM</SUB>. AbGIR3 has macrolide resistant genes and aminoglycoside resistant gene <I>armA</I>. <I>A. baumannii</I> KAB03 harbours mutations in <I>pmrB</I> and <I>pmrC</I>, which are believed to confer colistin resistance. In addition, proteomic and transcriptional analysis of KAB03 confirmed that β-lactamases (ADC-73 and OXA-23), Ade efflux pumps (AdeIJK), outer membrane proteins (OmpA and OmpW), and colistin resistance genes (PmrCAB) were major proteins responsible for antibiotic resistance.
