An Inverted-U Relationship for Environmental Pollution Loadings and Foreign Direct Investment
Eun, Woong,Kim, Dong Yeub 한국환경경제학회 한국자원경제학회 2003 자원·환경경제연구 Vol.12 No.4
The role of foreign direct investment (FDI) as a channel of knowledge transfer and on the technological spillovers of know-how to other sectors in the economy is in the middle of this debate. Thus, foreign direct investment maγ have significant positive effects in reducing residual loadings and environmental pollution. There Is an abiding concern expressed by many commentators that countries will lower their environmental standards to attract foreign investment, thereby creating so-called "pollution havens." Others argue that increasing foreign investment could promote "pollution halos" by introducing and transferring more efficient and less polluting technologies. The primary objective of this study is to show the dynamic relationship among pollution loadings, pollution abatement effort, and economic development with explicit consideration of FDI-related effects. This study found when foreign direct investment is evaluated in the model, the environmental pollution level is reduced and expenditure on pollution abatement is increased.

Recently, methane has attracted much attention as an alternative carbon feedstock since it is the major component of abundant shale and natural gas. In this work, we produced methanol from methane using whole cells of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b as the biocatalyst. M. trichosporium OB3b was cultured on NMS medium with a supply of 7:3 air/methane ratio at 30oC. The optimal concentrations of various methanol dehydrogenase inhibitors such as potassium phosphate and EDTA were determined to be 100 and 0.5 mM, respectively, for an efficient production of methanol. Sodium formate (40 mM) as a reducing power source was added to enhance the conversion efficiency. A productivity of 49.0 mg/l·h, titer of 0.393 g methanol/l, and conversion of 73.8% (mol methanol/mol methane) were obtained under the optimized batch condition.

No-reflow phenomenon occurs frequently during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and it has a strong negative impact on clinical outcome. Adenosine and verapamil are indicated by ESC guidelines and Abciximab could be also considered for treatment of no-reflow. Complications associated with Abciximab include bleeding and profound thrombocytopenia. This report describes a 65 year-old man with STEMI who had a rare complication of profound thrombocytopenia after using abciximab and Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) for treatment of no-reflow with cardiogenic shock during PPCI. After transfusion of platelet concentration, platelet count was improved without thrombotic complication in spite of no-reflow phenomenon and the weaning of IABP could be done safely without bleeding using closing device.

An intramural hematoma formation is a rare complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A 72 year-old woman who has treated for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) transferred to our hospital due to suspicious acute coronary syndrome with resting chest pain for 6 hours. Emergent coronary angiogram (CAG) showed 3 narrowed coronary arteries of which culprit lesion was a right coronary artery (RCA). After predilatation with conventional balloon, drug eluting stents (DES) 3.0×28 mm for proximal RCA and 2.75×28 mm for distal RCA were implanted. After implantation of a distal stent, no-reflow phenomenon was developed. Although an improvement was observed in the TIMI flow grade from grade 0 to grade 2 after injection of nicorandil, and abciximab, PCI for other residual lesions was withheld. After 3 days, she was discharged and readmitted for elective PCI for residual lesions because of exertional chest pain 1 month later. CAG showed left anterior descending artery (LAD) was concerned about an only target at first, because of complexity of mid LAD. After implantation of 2.75×23 mm DES for proximal LAD, a type B dissection was developed just below the distal edge of stent. Therefore, additional DES implantation should be considered for dissecting lesion. Although 2.75×23 mm DES for mid LAD was implanted by dual wire support, fluoroscopy showed the staining of dye with luminal narrowing in LAD ostium during positioning of stent for implantation which was suspicious of new formation of dissection. Therefore, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) was performed and identified differentially not a dissection but an extensive coronary intramural hematoma (CIH). An additional 3.0×18mm DES was implanted for CIH of LAD ostium. Followed IVUS revealed the lumen was preserved and size of CIH was decreased. After PCI, the patient was followed without symptoms. We present a case who had several critical complications especially CIH during sequential PCI and IVUS-guided differential diagnosis and additional stent implantation was successful.

Objectives: Women experience more stress in middle age than in other periods of their lives. Therefore, health management programs that enable middle-aged women to cope with and manage stress are needed. This study investigated the psychological effects of a meditation-focused forest therapy program among 53 middle-aged women living in urban areas in Korea. Methods: Participants were divided into 2 groups: one group underwent the program for 3 days in a forest, followed by 3 days in an urban environment, and the other group underwent the program for 3 days in the urban environment, followed by 3 days in the forest. The psychological effects of the forest therapy program were evaluated using the Profile of Mood States-Brief (POMS-B). Differences in mood state before and after the program conducted in the forest (experimental group) and in the urban environment (control group) were evaluated using the paired-samples t-test. Results: The program in the forest significantly reduced tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion among the domains of the POMS-B. The program in the urban area significantly reduced tension, but not depression, anger, fatigue, or confusion. Conclusions: Meditation-focused forest therapy programs are expected to contribute to promoting psychological health and enhancing the quality of life of middle-aged women.

Aim of this study is to investigate the dimensional and shrinkage characteristics of the weft knitted fabrics with Polylactic acid(PLA) knitted yarn. This PLA knitted yarn was made of the biodegradability fiber. The structure of weft knitted fabrics that was utilized for this study is the plain stitch, which is the most basic structure among all weft knitted fabrics. As the stitch length is shorter, the stitch density, courses density, and wales density are more increasing. The stitch density increased as pre-treatment process and dyeing process progressed. On the contrary, the heat setting process made it decreasing. The MR(Machine Relaxation) and DR(Dry Relaxation) standard area shrinkage were increasing as wet process progressed and as the stitch lengths are long.
S-140 : Diagnostic Role of EUS in Groove Pancreatitis
( Jae Hoon Kim ),( Yun Jin Jung ),( Kyung Hwa Yoon ),( Dong Yeub Eun ),( Dong Woo Shin ) 대한내과학회 2013 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2013 No.1
Context: Groove pancreatitis is a rare form of chronic pancreatitis localized within the ‘groove’ between the pancreatic head, duodenum and common bile duct. Case report: A 56-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with epigastric pain and nausea. Enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed swelling of the pancreatic head and focal wall edema of the second portion of the duodenum with a cystic lesion around the pancreaticoduodenal groove. Peripancreatic fluid collection was also seen. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple ulcer scars with pseudodiverticulum and contracting folds at bulb and bulging contour at 2nd portion of duodenum. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) showed an anechoic round lesion interrupting 3rd, 4th and subserosa of the duodenal wall at level of uncinate process. These findings appeared consistent with the diagnosis of groove pancreatitis. The patient was treated with conservative medical management for 1week and symptoms subsided. Imaging problems described above completely disappeared on following abdominal CT after four months. Conclusions: Discrimination of groove pancreatitis from pancreatic head cancer can often be difficult and is confirmed by surgery such as pancreaticoduodenectomy. Therefore, imaging examinations is very important to diagnose groove pancreatitis. EUS is helpful modality to differentiate groove pancreatitis from pancreatic head cancer.
