        Heme oxygenase-1 induced by desoxo-narchinol-A attenuated the severity of acute pancreatitis via blockade of neutrophil infiltration

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has an anti-inflammatory action in acute pancreatitis (AP). However, its mechanism of action and natural compounds/drugs to induce HO-1 in pancreas are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the regulatory mechanisms of HO-1 during AP using desoxo-narchinol-A (DN), the natural compound inducing HO-1 in the pancreas. Female C57/BL6 Mice were intraperitoneally injected with supramaximal concentrations of cerulein (50 μg/kg) hourly for 6 h to induce AP. DMSO or DN was administered intraperitoneally, then mice were sacrificed 6 h after the final cerulein injection. Administration of DN increased pancreatic HO-1 expression through activation of activating protein-1, mediated by mitogen-activated protein kinases. Furthermore, DN treatment reduced the pancreatic weight-to-body weight ratio as well as production of digestive enzymes and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Inhibition of HO-1 by tin protoporphyrin IX abolished the protective effects of DN on pancreatic damage. Additionally, DN treatment inhibited neutrophil infiltration into the pancreas via regulation of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 2 (CXCL2) by HO-1. Our results suggest that DN is an effective inducer of HO-1 in the pancreas, and that HO-1 regulates neutrophil infiltration in AP via CXCL2 inhibition.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Desoxo-narchinol-A (DN) is a natural compound of HO-1 inducer in pancreas. </LI> <LI> Mechanism of DN-induced HO-1 is mediated by MAPK/Activator Protein-1/HO-1 signaling. </LI> <LI> DN-induced HO-1 blocks neutrophil infiltration into pancreas via inhibition of CXCL2. </LI> <LI> DN inhibits cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis (AP) and AP-associated lung injury. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Toxic hepatitis has been reported as a major cause of acute hepatitis, but its potential induction by herbal remedies and/or health foods is usually neglected. We experienced a case of toxic hepatitis associated with Polygoni multiflori, a Chinese herb commonly known as Ho-Shou-Wu. A 54-year-old woman consumed Ho-Shou-Wu for 1 month, after which she experienced fatigue and overall weakness. A diagnosis of toxic hepatitis was made based on her clinical history, the findings for viral markers and other laboratory data, and ultrasonography. Her condition improved considerably after she stopped taking Ho-Shou-Wu. However, she resumed taking Ho-Shou-Wu immediately after discharge from hospital, which aggravated her symptoms and liver function. She was immediately readmitted and stopped taking Ho-Shou-Wu. Her relapse into hepatitis immediate after resuming consumption of the herb is strongly indicative of the validity of Koch`s postulate in this case.

        Biodegradable firms were prepared from rice bran protein with 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% glycerol and 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% sorbitol. The effects of glycerol and sorbitol contents on tensile strength, % elongation and water vapour permeability of the films were studied. Films prepared with sorbitol had higher tensile strengh, lower % elongation and lower water vapour permeability than the films prepared with glycerol.

        STS 304 강의 용접부에 미치는 전자선 조사의 영향

        The heat affected zone(HAZ) and matrix of a welded STS 304 steel have been irradiated in an 1250 keV high voltage electron microscope at 673 K and up to 5.4 dpa(displacements per atom) to study the effect of electronbeam irradiation on the microstructure. In-situ observation showed that the voids formed by electron-beam irradiation coalescenced and grew to larger void with irradiation dose. Values of void size, void number density and void swelling percentage in HAZ were greater than those of matrix, and these were increased and then saturated gradually with irradiation dose. Non-equilibrium segregation phenomena such as Cr depletion and Ni enrichment were also observed in both the HAZ and matrix of welded STS304 steel at the grain boundary.

        Power electronics technology based on power semiconductor switching devices(PSSD) is used extensively as a mean to control electrical energy in domestic and industry applications. Among commercial PSSDs, self turn-off PSSDs are most available, which can perform high speed turn-on/off operations by exciting signals at control terminals. This paper presents new driving circuits considering characteristics of PSSDs, which can drive MOSFET, IGBT, SIT, and SI-Thy having potentiality of applications in future industry, And it is shown that the proposed design method can be applied to main power conversion circuits. As a result of applications a developed driving circuit to various switching elements such as MOSFET, IGBT, SIT, and SI-Thy, it is proved that the proposed design method can be used potentially in power conversion circuits.

        고 Mn-Cr 강의 조사손상에 미치는 전자선 조사 온도의 영향

        The effect of electron-beam irradiation temperature on irradiation damage of 12%Cr-15%Mn austenitic steel for structural material of nuclear and/or fusion reactors from the point of view of the reduced activation was investigated by using the 1,250 keV HVEM and an energy dispersed X-ray analyzer(EDX) in a 200 keV FE-TEM with beam diameter of about 0.5 nm. Void formation was not observed in irradiated specimen. The dislocation loop growth was observed and the density and size of dislocation loop were increased with irradiation dose. Irradiation-induced segregations of Cr and Mn at grain boundary were also observed by electron-beam irradiation condition. The amount of Mn segregation was increased with irradiation temperature, however, segregation phenomenon was disappeared in the case of Cr.

      • 傾斜지게 결합된 spot 鎔接 箱型斷面部材의 應力과 變形解析 : 굽힘하중이 작용하는 경우 When Applied Bending Load

        In automobile frame work, thin walled box-sectional members are widely used. In such members, obliquely jointed ones can be often found. Exact solution of stress distribution and the strain for such members is very difficult owing to complicated strain at obliquely jointed part. However, the designer of automobile body structure must know the stress distribution and the strain on them for their more resonable design. In this report, an approximate estimation obtained by changing actual automobile frame of the obliquely jointed box-sectional member into simply simulated model for structural analysis is reported. Estimated models are three kinds of obliquely attached angles of 30˚, 45˚ and 60˚. Obtained results are as follow : 1) The axial stresses highly distribute between the box-beam and the I-beam and are influenced by the attached angle of the member. 2) The maximum axial stress of the flange is occurred at the fixed end of the short-flange, and its' value is nearly 2 times as much one of the long-flange. 3) According as the attached angle of the member increases, shear centre moves from the long-flange side to short-flange and deflection of the free end of the member decreases. 4) According as the attached angle of the member increases, the maximum principal stresses arround fixed end of the member decreases.

        고정층과 순환유동층에서 CaSO_4의 환원반응에 대한 온도와 CO농도의 영향

        순환유동층 석탄연소로에서 석회석에 의한 찰황반응에 영향을 미치는 CaSO_4의 환원반응에 의한 SO-2 재배출을 실험적으로 확인하고 SO_2의 재배출에 미치는 온도와 CO 농도의 영향에대해 상용 순환유동층에 적용할 수 있는 기초자료를 확보하기 위해 고정층과 순환유동층에서 층물질로 석회석과 상용 순롼 유동층 하부회를 이용하여 환원실험을 수행하였으며 CaSO_4의 환원반응에 미치는 온도와 CO의 영향을 측정 및 해석하였다. 고온조건에서 CO가 환원제로 작용하여 C_aSO_4로부터 SO_2가 재배출되는 현상을 확인하였으며 CaSO_4로부터 SO_2의 재배출은 온도와 CO농도가 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 본 실험의 결과에 의해 온도가 증가함에 따라 석회석에 의한 탈황율이 감소하는 현상을 환원이론으로 설명할 수 있다는 것이 확인되었다. For qualitative understanding of the sulphur capture process in a circulating fluidized bed fumace, the effects of temperature and CO concentration on the reactivity of partially sulfated CaO were experimentally examined. The tests were performed in a fixed bed reactor and lab-scale circulating fluidized bed reactor. The materials used were partially sulfated domestic limestone and bottom ash drained from commercial circulating fluidized bed furnaces. The re-emission of SO_2 from partially sulfated limestone and bottom ash increases with temperature as well as with concentration of the reducing agent CO. From the results of this study, the temperature dependence of sulfation could be explained by reduction theory.

        치과응용을 위한 알루미나-유리 복합체 제조

        The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of alumina-glass dental composites. Four different borosilicate glasses containing 1, 2, 3, 4 mol% Li₂O were prepared. Porous alumina compacts of 12.0 mm in diameter and 1.0 mm in thickness were prepared with alumina powders of 1.8 and 4.6㎛ by slip casting and sintered at 1,120℃ for 2 hours. Dense composites were made by infiltration of molten glass into partially sintered alumina at 1200℃ for 6 hours. All samples were polished sequentially from #600 to #2,000 diamond disk, and the final surface finishing on the tensile side was received an additional polishing sequence through 0.3㎛ diamond paste. Apparent porosity of alumina-glass composites was measured by means of the KS L3114 method. Biaxial flexure test was conducted by using ball-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. To examine the microstructural aspect of crack propagation, Vickers-produced indentation crack and fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Apparent porosity rate decreased according to the increasing with the particle size of alumina. 2. The maximum biaxial flexure strength of 365.26 MPa was obtained with an addition of 4 mol% Li₂O in glass composition. 3. The maximum fracture toughness of3.95 MPa·m½ was obtained with an addition of 3 mol% Li₂O. 4. The crack deflection and crack bridging were the principal strengthening mechanisms in the alumina-glass composites.
