      • Mobile Convenience:A Design Ideation Exercise to Suit Various Indian Contexts

        ( Debkumar Chakrabarti ) 한국감성과학회 2014 춘계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.-

Varied levels of serious uneasiness and health issues are caused due to not able to answer natures call in time and places. It raises a concern for ergonomic design intervention to look into a system that goes along various needs in Indian context. Inadequate facilities, in city bus stands, fairs, picnic and tourist gathering spots, public functions etc. like places where large number of people assemble and stay for considerable period of time, either there no such convenience facilities are available or wherever it is present they also do not conform to the need, privacy and human ethics. During natural calamities, there is a sudden requirement for such facilities that requires specific designs to meet the challenges. Here design ergonomics can look into for designing comfortable and trustworthy system to fit the context. It is also noticed that situations where people gather for longer period of time, in spite of facilities being provided normally beyond the periphery of the location of event, people cannot leave the place to visit the designated permanent or makeshift arrangements for various reasons. Many-a-times the design also do not appear usable and inviting.

Many-a-times the design also do not appear usable and inviting. An attempt was made to investigate the issues and to conceive the possible design features of mobile convenience system and installations that would facilitate easy transportation to and from between the location of requirements and the service center; maintain a context specific identity and at the same time that would also not stand alone in appearance to disturb the gatherings’ movements. Design ideation focuses both on male, female, children and elderly requirement issues, installations, cleanings along with ease of manufacturing and maintenance. Relevant behaviour of the user groups with Indian context specific identity was also kept under consideration in the ideation process. This paper demonstrates an ideation exercise of such convenience and makeshift facilities with ergonomic salient design features from the academic point of views with a modular development approach.

      • Investigation of work-related muscular pain among women handloom weavers of Assam a state of North-East India using REBA method

        Sangeeta Pandit,Debkumar Chakrabarti 대한인간공학회 2014 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5

Due to poor literacy rate and household responsibilities, Indian women are mostly found to be involved into home based cottage industry as a major workforce. Handloom industry one of the biggest home based cottage industry accounts to be the second largest industry in India, after agriculture where 77.9% of the workforce are women (National Handloom Census 2011). For handloom weaving, the weavers adopt different awkward postures along with high force and highly repetitive nature of task for more than 8 hours of work schedule. Due to economic crisis, the weavers work on handlooms on the cost of their health. A sample of 150 women weavers from 118 handlooms clusters were studied using REBA (rapid entire body assessment) assessment tool. REBA helps in assessing the biomechanical and postural loading of the whole body and helps in understanding the level of musculoskeletal disorders. Results showed a significant association between individual body parts score with self-reported pains obtained by body map. No association was observed in case of Left Lower Arm and leg pain.
