Accounting for L2 Article Choice Sensitivity on Korean EFL Learners` Grammatical Ability
( Seung Hyun Baek ),( Bijon K. Sarker ) 글로벌영어교육학회(구 호남영어교육학회) 2013 Studies in English education Vol.18 No.2
The current study explored the L2 article sensitivities of fifty-three Korean EFL learners to three semantic contexts (definite, indefinite, zero). The participants were divided into two groups with respect to their grammatical ability in a cloze test and their receptive and productive choices for L2 articles were assessed in a forced-choice elicitation and a writing production test respectively. The results unveiled that regardless of their grammatical ability, Korean EFL learners are likely to be most accurate in the use of definite the and be more accurate in the use of indefinite a than zero articles in both tests. In the forced-choice elicitation test, the results also uncovered that participants tend to significantly associate definite the with noun phrases (NPs) in which zero articles are obligatorily required. Furthermore, it was found from the writing test that participants unnecessarily omitted definite the and indefinite a prior to NPs. These findings suggest that L2 learners may have inherent transferable knowledge from L1 NPs to L2 NPs in terms of definiteness, but face unstable representation of L2 article systems due to their article-less L1and complex interplay of indefinite a and zero articles.
