We report a study of the magnetic properties of a Mn12O12(O2CC4H3S)16(H2O)4 single-molecule magnet. Polycrystalline powder samples were prepared by using a reaction of 3-thiophenecarboxylic acid with a slurry of Mn12O12(O2CCH3)16(H2O)4 (noted as Mn12-Ac) in methylene chloride. Magnetization measurements were performed down to 2 K with a magnetic eld of up to 6 T. The magnetization curves showed a superparamagnetic behavior above the blocking temperature TB and became hysteric below TB due to the magnetic anisotropy of the molecule. The spin and the magnetic anisotropy constant of the molecule were determined by analyzing the magnetization data, and the results agree well with those for Mn12-Ac. We also report the chemical deposition of a Mn12O12(O2CC4H3S)16(H2O)4 lm and an observation of its surface morphology by using scanning tunneling microscopy.

(2011) <I>European Journal of Cancer Care</I><B>20</B>, 803–809</P><P><B>Satisfaction with mammography in the National Cancer Screening Programme participants of age 40s in Korea</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to evaluate satisfaction with the National Cancer Screening Programme of mammography in Korea and to examine the association between subscales of satisfaction and general satisfaction. We conducted a cross‐sectional telephone survey for women who had obtained a National Cancer Screening Programme mammographic screening at general hospitals between May and October 2008. The present study included 2005 women in their forties. We performed multivariate linear regression using dependent variable as general satisfaction and independent variables as subscales of satisfaction, such as pre‐screening information transfer, staff interpersonal skills, physical surroundings and results reporting. Participants were stratified according to the result of their mammogram as negative or positive. Mean score of satisfaction was above 2.5 of 4 for all subscales. Women who received positive results were less satisfied with all of subscale factors. Staff interpersonal skills were the most important factor that contributed to general satisfaction. Future efforts such as staff training programme of communication/attitude skills, ensuring privacy and explanation of possible discomfort of the screening would be needed.</P>

In the present work, a unique core/shell structured TiO2/polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite is successfully fabricated by chemically depositing PANI nanorods on a periodically arrayed TiO2 inverse opal (IO) structure for energy storage applications. The morphology, composition, and electrochemical behavior of the TiO2/PANI core/shell structure are studied and compared with those of the PANI nanorods on stainless steel substrate. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) studies confirm the formation of a PANI nanorod shell structure on the core of the TiO2 surface. A large specific capacity of 196.59 mA h g-1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1 is achieved for TiO2/PANI electrode which is comparable to that of TiO2 (2.83 mA h g-1) and PANI (95.86 mA h g-1) electrodes. Such improvement is ascribed to PANI with a high capacity and excellent conductivity, and the TiO2 IO structure with a large surface area and interconnected macropores, allowing efficient PANI nanorod loading, mass transport, and rapid charge transfer. A symmetric energy storage device is fabricated by assembling the two pieces of TiO2/PANI with a H2SO4 gel electrolyte. The device shows the high energy density of 20.36 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 500 W kg-1 with good cycling stability (78% for 1000 cycles).

<P>SETTING: National Masan Tuberculosis Hospital, Masan, South Korea. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of prothionamide (PTH) in South Korean patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and to investigate whether differences in body mass index (BMI) could explain observed differences in PTH disposition. DESIGN: Seventeen patients participated in the study; all had MDR-TB and had received combination anti-tuberculosis treatment, including PTH, cycloserine, ofloxacin, para-aminosalicylic acid and streptomycin or kanamycin, for at least 2 weeks. The patients were divided into two groups based on BMI: Group A (18.5 < or = BMI<23), and Group B (BMI<18.5). Serum samples were collected over 24 h, and the plasma PTH concentration was determined by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography assay. RESULTS: After steady-state administration of PTH, the mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to 12 h (AUC(0-12h)) was 11.0 +/- 3.7 microg h/ml. The mean T(max) and t(1/2) were respectively 3.6 h and 2.7 h. No significant difference in PTH disposition was observed between groups A and B, except for ke and t(1/2). CONCLUSION: In the pharmacokinetic parameter estimates for PTH in MDR-TB patients during routine treatment, the pharmacokinetics of PTH did not appear to correlate with extent of emaciation in MDR-TB patients.</P>

<P>The production performance, efficacy, and safety of two types of vaccines for infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) were compared with in-ovo vaccination of Cobb 500 broiler chickens for gross and microscopic examination of the bursa of Fabricius, bursa/body weight (b/B) ratio, flow cytometry, and serologic response to Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccination. One vaccine was a recombinant HVT-IBD vector vaccine (HVT as for herpesvirus of turkeys) and the other was an intermediate plus live IBDV vaccine. A significant difference was detected at 21 d. Eight of 10 chickens that received the IBDV live vaccine had severe bursal lesions and a relatively low b/B ratio of 0.95, and an inhibited NDV vaccine response. On the other hand, the HVT-IBD vector vaccine resulted in mild bursal lesions and a b/B ratio of 1.89. Therefore, the live vaccine had lower safety than that of the HVT-IBD vector vaccine. To determine the protective efficacy, chickens were intraocularly challenged at 24 d. Eight of 10 chickens in the IBDV live vaccination group showed gross and histological lesions characterized by hemorrhage, cyst formation, lymphocytic depletion, and a decreased b/B ratio. In contrast, the HVT-IBD vector vaccinated chickens showed mild gross and histological lesions in three of 10 chickens with a b/B ratio of 1.36, which was similar to that of the unchallenged controls. Vaccinated chickens showed a significant increase in IBDV antibody titers, regardless of the type of vaccine used. In addition, significantly better broiler flock performance was observed with the HVT-IBD vector vaccine compared to that of the live vaccine. Our results revealed that the HVT-IBD vector vaccine could be used as an alternative vaccine to increase efficacy, and to have an improved safety profile compared with the IBDV live vaccine using in-ovo vaccination against the Korean very virulent IBDV in commercial broiler chickens.</P>
