This study set out to review tombs of the Yeongnam region from the Bronze Age and examine the social changes that led to the changes of the tomb culture during the age. Tombs first appeared in the former part of the Bronze Age. These tombs were built as "monuments" rather than the simple outcomes of body disposal, thus holding significance. Tombs were built as monuments because there was a need to increase the authority of leaders. The start of tomb construction meant the beginning of stable "sedentism." In the former part of the Bronze Age, groups of 1~3 tombs were distributed just like a hamlet consisted of 2~3 house in narrow and long square forms. Hamlet and Village were combined to form a ‘Chon-lag(村落)’, tombs of whose tribal leader contained polished stone daggers buried in them. In the latter part of the Bronze Age, tombs formed a cluster and became a cemetery. The part marked the heyday of the dolmen culture. The linear expansion type was observed in the clustered arrangement of tombs in sequence of strata. Largescale villages began to emerge around this time. ‘Eub-lag(邑落)’ consisted of hamlet, village, and twon. The equal society with no inequality institutionalized was still maintained. Cian chief also emerged as leaders of ‘Eub-lag’. Their tombs were Myoyeoktype dolmens in the Gyeongnam region, had long stone daggers buried in them in the Daegu area, and enclosed square tombs in the Ulsan area. In the early Iron Age, networks between villages worked more importantly than the size of a village. This period witnessed the appearance of Polity chief, a ruler of an unequal society and the construction of a tomb for a single person. The tombs of Polity chief were massive dolmens distributed independently and wooden coffin tombs with new imports of slender bronze daggers and bronze mirrors buried in them. A new ‘Guk-eup(國邑)’ held a memorial service for heavenly gods on the top of a hill by building an altar with piles of stone in the same shape as a dolmen and using the same rock as a cover stone. As greater importance was placed on items of authority for individuals rather than collective labor force, wooden coffin tombs were spread fast. A new era began with the culture of building dolmens disappearing into history.
