This study aims to describe social concerns with the handicapped reflected in editorials in Korean daily newspapers. Data were derived from the editorial articles dealing with the handicapped that appeared in two main newspapers in Korea, The Dong-A Ilbo and The Chosun Ilbo, for the past thirty-one years from January 1, 1970, to December 31, 2000. The contents analysis of the editorials was conducted based on three categories: types of the disabilities, contents of the articles with respect to social environment and rehabilitation for the whole person, and reporting disposition of the editorials. The results are summarized as follows: The results did not show any significant pattern in quantitative change of editorials. For the monthly distribution of the editorials, it was shown that the newspapers commented on the handicapped most frequently in April and December the month in which public attention was most directed to the disadvantaged. A pattern was observed in terms of temporal changes in social concerns and attitude toward the handicapped. While social concerns with physical and social cognitive environments tended to increase, those with medical and educational rehabilitation tended to decrease.

        통일을 위한 한국시민사회에 관한 연구

이경식 釜山大學校 師範大學 1999 교사교육연구 Vol.41 No.-

The civil society is a Western term initially used in England in 17th century. It was discussed widely in 18th century when the Capitalism was sweeping the entire world. Generally speaking, the civil society is opposite to majestic monarchy because it means the voluntary activities from citizens regardless of legal and administrative sovereignty. Some philosophers of Enlightenment such as Thomas hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau developed civil society theories and it reached at its zenith by Hegel. After Hegal, the concept of liberal civil society was theoretically systematized by Tocqueville. It is based on dichotomy between the state and society. Its ideology puts an emphasis on the social control over the state in pursuit of minimizing state power and of maximizing society. Another main stream of civil society was succeeded by Marx. He thought civil society is the sources of suppression, exploitation and alienation in modern society. His theory was succeeded and developed by Antonio Gramsci. He thought that the Marx's dichotomy between the superstructure and substructure should be replaced by the trisection which consists of state, civil society and economy. He applied the new concept of hegemony which means intellectual and ethical leadership. In his civil society theory, the superstructure was replaced by the substructure and its function changed into rather free one in accordance with the substructure. Since then, Marx's civil society was succeeded and developed by Habermas. As the democratic movement made a great progress in June 1987 in Korea, Korean civil society was also rapidly developed. In spite of some disputes over the trigger of Korean civil society, most scholars agreed that 'July Democratic Struggle' in 1987 was a watershed in development of civil society in Korea. Therefore, many theoretical disputes over civil society were made in 90s. Most of them were about the characteristics of Korean civil society. In this study, however, I mainly put a concentration on functions of civil society rather than characteristics of it. I especially focus on the functions of civil society for the reunification for Korea. North Korea hasn't developed its civil society yet. It has maintained a totalitarian state for over 50 years unlike Eastern European countries where civil society traditions were handed down in their history. This means it is our duty to prepare civil society designed for the Korean reunification. Naturally Korean civil society has a bunch of works to do for the reunification of Korean peninsula, I think South Korea has two duties to do for the purpose. First, we need to make a new ideology for the reunification of Korea. Second, we have to invent national culture for it.

      • 볼엔드밀 공구의 헬리컬 운동을 이용한 구멍가공 특성

        김근오,박규열,이경식 울산대학교 1998 공학연구논문집 Vol.29 No.1

Drilling is an indispensable process in manufacturing of the die and mould and the other mechanical parts which needs hagh dimensional and surface accuracy. In this paper, a new type of drilling method was proposed in order to improve both processing efficiency and accuracy. Specifically, the helical motion using ball end mill tools, instead of normal drilling method, was applid to perform an effective hole machining. In this paper, an theoretical background of the new type of drilling method was setablished, and the feasibility of the proposed theory was proved by experiments, where proposed drilling process in the paper gave a different machining specification than general method did.

      • A Study of Robert Frost

        李景植 東亞大學校 1964 東亞論叢 Vol.2 No.1

It is generally acknowledged that American literature had thrown off the restraint of ‘colonial complex' at the beginning of twentieth century, and that in modern American literature poetry takes precedence over novel from an artistic standpoint. The actual moment of maturity of American poetry might be set at 1912. With this year as a turning-point, American poetry seemed almost ready to throw off connection with the past and with the old tradition. And we cannot think of what is called 'poetic renaissance' with disregard for 'POETRY', the poetical magazine, which was published by Harriet Monroe in Chicago in 1912. So that, it is no exaggeration that there is no poet who is not placed under an obligation of 'POETRY' in modern American poets. Here, we must call your attention to this remarkable fact that The American poetical magazine, 'POETRY' and 'LITTLE REVIEW' which was a turning-point in modern American poetry, came out from Chicago. and that we must note the reason why 'New poetry' and novel famous in 1920th American realism came out from the new cultural background of Middle-west. In brief, New culture of America had fit rather to wild, complicated but passionate modern big city of Chicago in Middle-west than to the warmest and conservative traditions of North-west country. That is to say, Modern American literature was slightly savage and harsh in each voices, but as I said just little before, it did not stick to the past and the traditions. In a rapid current of 'New Poetry' so called 'CHICAGO GROUP' was first appeared. They are Carl Sandberg, Vachel Lindsay, and E. L. Masters. Their voices was also harsh, wild and dynamic just as the sound of hammer in a factory of Chicago, but was fresh, passionate and modern. And continually, in the broad new frontier of American poetry, there arose Imagism movement, modernism movement and surrealism Movement and so on. In this treatise, I studied the poetic spirit of Robert Frost who tooks pride in isolation in the farm of Vermont through all his life and he was also identified with New England soil, and I considered the essence of poetry seeking the characteristics of his poetry. In the first place, the first and second poetical works of Frost, 'A Boy's will and North of Boston', appeared in England ironically. Then he had stayed in suburban town of Beaconsfield in England keeping his company with so called Georgian Poets. With these two poetical works, Frost was recognized at once as one of the authentic voices of Modern poetry in England and in America especially. The world of his early works is lyrical and pastoral. He insisted upon love and belief for the nature and the man. However, in his poems nature and man are always conflicting. Frost had dramatized the nature and the man with New England for the background using New England slang and various rhythm. In short, his qualities of early days was that of love-poet and was nature poet. Secondly, when we came out into the world of his middle phase, we find that he had written continually about the nature and the man in New England using metaphor and allegory more skillfully than ever. And that definitely his thought and philosophy has deepened into his poems, and his view point of the nature and the man has become skeptic. Although his standpoint in life was skeptic and his philosophy was dualistic, he is still a humanitarian as he was before, because we can find his love poems in his middle phase as ever. Finally, we can see a slightly changed portrait of poet in his last poems. But he has never given up pastoralism. Become deepened into his skepticism, he found a star in his heaven and in his poetry. It was a religion of Robert Frost. In other words, he searched a star something like eternity or God, into his mind as a spiritual reliance. thus he changed his themes of pastoralism into cosmic themes such as star or moon in his later poems. In a sense, he recognized the limitatation of Man's existence in the infinite cosmos. And he accepted tragic interpretion for the world and for humanity. Finally, I can conclude that although he was a skeptic, and his philosophy was dualism, he had emphasized the dignity of humanity and the immortality of human spirit from beginning to end, that even if he had held on to the traditions, the underlying tones of his poetry was modern. It seems to me that there will never appears again such a poet as Robert Frost in the history of American poetry. He was a love poet. He was a poet of belief.
