          A Vital Fragment: A Reading ofNathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet LetterJaekwang HwangThis essay discusses Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter in terms of a fragmentary text structured by the differential play of language. The discussion is centered upon “The “Custom House” and the concluding part of the novel because a fragmentary text of this sort always problematizes the ideas of textual origin and closure. In his preface to The Marble Faun, Hawthorne remarks that “Ruin” serves as an indispensable component in making his “Romance” grow. He also complained about the lack of Ruin in his dear native land, that is, America. Yet the author was oblivious about the fact that he, to write The Scarlet Letter, had invented the scarlet symbol and some fragmentary texts as a substitute for ruin. In many respects, the scarlet symbol in the fiction can be construed not only as ruin but also as a fragment in that it is a fraction of a signifier. Indeed, Hawthorne appropriates the continuity between sign and ruin in rendering The Scarlet Letter into a semantic fragment that resembles the symbolic fragment of the German and British Romantics. For this reason, it also anticipates an innovated writing style which is in keeping with post-modern literary theories. Like a fragment or ruin, the scarlet letter A conceals the originary moment of its creation, the presence of its author, and its full image or referent. It also acts like a decentering signifier that challenges the possibility of an outline, groundwork, a beginning, an end, a totality and a closure in the fiction. With its predilection for the differential play of the scarlet symbol, The Scarlet Letter prefigures the anti-essentialist view of literary texts.

          The purpose of this paper is to share a teaching experience of a course, the introduction to British and American fiction to 1900. It should first be stated, however, that what took place in the course does not exactly reflect what the course's title suggests, for it was modified to meet students' needs and desire to appropriate their close reading experience with Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter as means not only to acquire the knowledge of British and American fiction to 1900 but also to improve their skills for reading, thinking and writing analytically and critically. Thus, rather than surveying the expanding canon of British and American novels belonging to the period, this course sought to help students to achieve such objectives through a variety of activities and assignments conducted outside and inside classroom. The activities and assignments include an in-class presentation, 10 weekly quiz, and 5 biweekly reviews on the assigned pages of The Scarlet Letter, and a 5-6 page term paper. Much of this paper is devoted to explain how those classroom and non-classroom activities of students were executed and interwoven with the instructor's lectures about critical approaches to the novel in a way that they meet the aforesaid goals of the course. This paper is concluded with the instructor's evaluation of his and the students' performance based on the students' semester-end comments upon the course.

        • 경피적 추체 성형술을 이용한 추체 압박 골절의 치료

          목적 : 경피적 추체 성형술은 골다공증에 의한 압박 골절이나 혈관종 등에 의한 추체의 병변시 추체내로 골대체물질인 골시멘트나 동종골 등을 주입 혹은 이식함으로서 척추체를 보강하여 추체를 안정화시키고 통증을 감소시키는 수술적 치료이다. 최근 노령인구의 증가로 인해 골다공증에 의한 척추 압박 골절이 증가하고 있으며 이에 저자들은 골시멘트를 이용한 경피적 추체 성형술을 시행하였으며 수술 후 임상 및 방사선적 결과에 대해 분석 하였다.대상 및 방법 : 2000년1월부터 2 0 0 1 년 4월까지 흉, 요추부의 압박골절로 본원에서 경피적 추체 성형술을 시행받은 5 9명, 111추체를 대상으로 하였으며 이중 남자가 1 0명, 여자는 4 9명이었고 평균연령은6 6 . 0 세(45 ∼ 8 5세)였다. 시술전 단순 방사선 검사 및 골밀도 검사와 컴퓨터 단층촬영을 시행하였고, 골주사 검사를 이용해서 병소를 확인하였으며, 시술시 환자를 복와위 상태에서 극돌기에 압통이 있는지확인하고 시술 부위에 대한 국소마취를 시행하였다. 방사선 조영장치 하에서 t r o c a r 가 추체 내에 정확히 삽입되었는지 확인 후 t r o c h a r 를 추체의 전방 1 / 3 까지 삽입하였으며 이를 통해 조영제( b a r i u m ) 와 혼합한 골시멘트를 추체내로 주입하였다.시술부위는 제 11, 12 흉추 및 제 1, 2 요추부의 흉요추부가 81 례로 대상 추체의 대부분을 차지하였으며 대상환자 중 1척추체만 시술받은 경우가 2 6명이었으며 2척추체가 2 0명, 3척추체 1 0명, 4척추체 2명, 7척추체 1명이었다. 골시멘트 평균 주입량은 4.7ml 였으며 시술후 1일째, 2주째, 2개월째에 추시 방사선검사를 통해 추체 높이의 변화를 측정하였고 환자의 증상 호전 정도 및 술 후 합병증 등을 파악하였다.결과 : 술 후 증상 호전 시기는 시술 후 2일 이내에 4 8명에서 통증의 호전이 있었으며 2주째 3명에서,2개월째 4명에서 통증의 호전이 있었으나 4명에서는 호전이 없었다. 술 후 증상의 호전 정도는 우수2 0명, 양호 2 4명, 보통 1 0명이었으며 불량 5명으로 전체 대상 환자의 7 5 % 에서 양호 이상의 호전을 보였다. 추체 높이는 술 전 55.5% 에서 술 후 70.3% 로 추체 높이의 증가가 있었으며 이는 통계학적으로 유의하였다( p<0.02 ). 술후 단순 방사선 검사상 경막외 혈관으로의 시멘트 누출이 1 3례, 추체 전방및 측방 누출이 9례 였으며 추간판 간격으로 누출된 경우가 5례 있었으며 1례에서는 후방 척추관내로 골시멘트가 누출되어 추가적인 후방 감압술을 시행하였다. 4명에서는 술전에 없었던 늑간방사통이발생하였으나 모무 늑간신경 차단술 후 증상호전을 보였다.

          Melville's “foundling, a presumable by-blow”: A Reading of the Acts of Open Form in Billy Budd, Sailor

          This paper examines multiple implications of the acts of the open form in Billy Budd with attention to the author's preference for open ended process of inquiry and non-foundational impulse toward his own art. Melville's open form is equivalent to non-formist organic form and therefore antithetical to the New Critical concept of organic unity, in that the former emphasizes the multiple endings and the fragmented nature of the text created by growing processes of the narrative while the latter underscores the finalized form in literary texts. For this reason, the open ended form engenders multiple perspectives, and renders the novel functional and performative rather than foundational. Like Billy Budd whose origin is unknown, the text of Billy Budd acts like a literary foundling or by-blow of its author whose self-subverting rhetoric allows the story about the protean character to grow further in the mids and hearts of its readers. Rather than conveying the last word of its author, the novel offers its readers interpretive freedom and interpretive conundrum as well.

          Naturalism, Culture and the Will to Power in August Stringdberg's The Father and Miss Julie

          This essay questions whether Strindberg's naturalistic plays such as The Father and Miss Julie can be read as an autobiographical text. The purpose of this question is two-fold. First, it is to argue that those two plays as naturalistic texts are at odds with the conceptual categories of autobiography since the former requires both the artist's detached attitudes towards his own art and scientific objectivity in representing reality. Second, it is to read those plays in a broader context by re-conceptualizing them as a cultural production. Culture in this essay is extended to the intellectual milieu and the scientific discoveries of the time. Strindberg was well versed in psychological and sociological theories of the past and the present. In his dramatization of the adverse reality of human relationships in The Father and Miss Julie, the playwright incorporates what he learned from the influential thinkers of the time including Freud, Herbert Spencer and Nietzsche.
