        It belongs to the great categories of modernization of mathematical education to solve problems algebraically in elementary school. Moreover, many mathematicians are interested in algebraic methods of solving problems in elementary mathematics these days for it will influence upon the present texts of mathematics in elementary school to be changed in near future. In this study the writer tried to examine the problems for the algebraic methods in solving the algebraic structured verbal problems in elementary school. There are two structures algebraic and arithmetic when we analyze the verbal problems in elementary school mathematics structually and two methods, algebraic and arithmetic in solving the verbal problems also. Consequently the two structures make four cases when combined with the two methods, but out of them the following two cases were studied in this study: 1. To solve the algebraic structured verbal problems algebraically. 2. To solve the algebraic structured verbal problems arithmetically. Many teachers in elementary school showed that the second case was most popular but it seems to be very difficult to teach one without understanding the other well. So the writer tried to find other kinds of teaching methods in solving the algebraic structured verbal problems. For the experimental teaching, the writer defined 8 forms of algebraic structured verbal problems according to the number of unknown variable operations and the position of unknown variable respect to equality symbol, and two groups were sampled from the fifth grade classes of the Attached Primary School of Andong Teachers' College, Andong City. One of the two was experimental, while the other controlled and two kinds of methods, algebraic and arithmetic, were experimented respectively at the same time. Two steps were taken necessarily: the first was to introduce the methods of linear equations for solving verbal problems to the pupils to prove the possibility of applying the method to elementary school, and the second was to compare the algebraic method with the arithmetic one in solving the algebraic structured verbal problems. The two steps were experimented through six weeks and examined with testing paper made by the writer. From the results of the examination the writer drew the two unbiased estimate value of each population which contained the sampling groups within by the method of analysis of variance. At last F-test and t-test were used for testing the hypothesis. Conclusions were as follows: 1. Analizing the verbal problems showed that the verbal problems which needed reverse thinking were not organized systematically well in terms of learning contents and arithmetically oriented teaching system. 2. As for the possibility of introducing the linear equations, it seemed to be affirmative though there were a few problems in the learning contents and teaching systems to be improved. It seemed more effective when the learning contents and situation with its learning period and system were to be improved better. 3. Though the same experimental group as used for testing the possibility of in-troducting the linear equations was again used for testing the algebraic methods to solve the algebraic structured verbal problems, it was shown up that the algebraic method was better than arithmetic method.

        Spontaneous Cervical Epidural Hematoma Mimicking Acute Ischemic Stroke

        In acute reperfusion therapy, the onset to needle time is correlated with the prognosis. Rapid diagnosis is essential to reduce the in-hospital delay. Meanwhile, intravenous thrombolysis requires strict indications and careful decisions to prevent hemorrhagic complications. If patients present with symptoms that mimic stroke, it may not be easy to reveal the underlying critical illness with only restricted assessment in the emergency room. Spontaneous cervical epidural hematoma usually presents with quadriplegia, but it may present with hemiplegia following neck pain, and no cranial abnormalities can easily be misdiagnosed as stroke. We report two cases of spontaneous cervical spinal epidural hematoma, which may be a harmful stroke mimicking intravenous thrombolysis.

        In recent year, we have seen that set, mapping, and mathematical structures (specially, the algebraic structure) were very important part in the education of modern Mathematics. So, this writer intends to study on the algebraic structure of complex number defined by matrix type. First, complex number is defined by square matrix of the 2nd degree. And next, it is shown that if complex number is defined by matrix type, the various properties of operations of complex number are satisfied as well as the general case of other typed, and the construction of group, ring, and field are satisfied too. Finaly, it is shown that it will be possible to teach the algebraic structure of complex number in high school and will be significant in new trends of mathematics, if the various problems caused, when this method is applied in high school, can be solved and if the algebraic structure of complex number can be applied by matric type systematically.

        원외부 후하소뇌 대 동맥류의 수술적 제거 : 증례보고 Case Report

        The authors report a rare case of right distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery(PICA) aneurysm arising from just distal to its vermian branch. A 36-year-old female patient presented with a sudden onset of headache, nausea, dizziness and ataxia without any other neurologic deficit. On brain computerized tomographic(CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), a well-defined round mass was detected just behind the fourth ventricle. On transfemoral vertebral angiogram(TFVAG), it was confirmed as a saccular aneurysm arising from the vermian branch of the right PICA. The aneurysm was initially directly clipped through bilateral suboccipital approach. Postoperative follow up angiogram after two weeks revealed a more enlarged aneurysm and an incompletely clipped neck. After making sufficient exposure of the aneurysm, the neck was reclipped and the sac removed. Postoperative results were uneventful.

        There is no doubt that mathematics in past was introduced into schools as a simple tool of application to natural science, but the application part of mathematics at present is extended not only to the fields of technical science but to those of finance, industry, culture, information, and behaviour science. So, since 1957, the movement of modernization of mathmatics has been displayed in the school to reform the method of teaching mathematics, and the essential education of mathematics by logic began to -be acomplished. Logic is a kind of the science of reasoning. Reasoning is a special kind of thinking, in which inference takes place or in which other new facts (called the conclusion) are drawn from some known facts (called the premise). Inference is either immediate or mediate. In the mediate inference, there are two kinds of inference, that is, deduction and induction. Also, commonly we mean it as deduction, which is expressed by the syllogism. In primary schools, it is a certain fact that inductive inference may be better than the other only for the learning by discovery, but the new facts got by inductive method can not be used again to the-other place in learning, if the mathematical logic for the new facts was not understood again by deductive method. Because it has a logical exactitude, teachers in primary school have feared to teach pupils by deductive method in solving problems. But, in general aims of arithmetic in primary schools, there is a requirement to grow an ability and an attitude to consider logicaly, and it is our common view that there remain many important things beyond the teaching by deductive inference in primary school too. So, we examined the tendency in logical thinking of them and the grade of understanding for logical language in problems from the pupils in the school 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades in a few primary schools and have found the fact that the teaching of logical language must be preceded from the low grade before the teaching of deductive inference. Therefore, according to the examined results, at first, we explorately established the aims and contents for the teaching of logical language. And the next, the aims and contents for the teaching of deductive inference in respect to fundamental four types, that is, categorical sylloism (q→p, p├q), negative syllogism (p→q,∼q├∼p), hypothetical syllogism (p→q, q→r├p→r), and disjunctive syllogism (p∨q,∼p├q).

        There are two methods, that is, arithmetic and algebraic, to solve the algebraic structured verbal-problems in elementary school mathematics. The purpose of this paper is to determine the fundamental mathematical principles to solve the algebraic structured verbal-problems with the algebraic method and to show the possibility of introducing the method to pupils in elementary school. The linear equations were presented here using a few fundamental forms which were little different from what are used in junior high school. A sample of a fifth-grade class consisting of 59 pupils in an elementary school, Andong City, was experimented in two weeks. The post problem test to the experimental group showed several good results of this study as follows; 1. The algebraic method upon problem solving can be understood easily by the pupils in elementary school. 2. It leads to the improvement of pupil`s ability in problem solving more mathematically. 3. The two facts mentioned above suggest the possibility that pupils may be benefitted in his verbal-problem solving ability when the algebraic method is applied.

        Rescue Endovascular Treatment to Prevent Neurological Deterioration in Acute Symptomatic Bilateral Vertebral Artery Occlusion

        Bilateral vertebral artery occlusive disease has been considered as a favorable condition with good collaterals. However, the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke secondary to symptomatic bilateral vertebral artery occlusion (BVAO) and endovascular treatment (EVT) has rarely been reported. We retrospectively selected patients with acute ischemic stroke admitted for symptomatic BVAO between January 2020 and February 2023. All patients with ischemic stroke were evaluated for ischemic lesion and arterial status using brain imaging and angiography. The prognosis of acute stroke with symptomatic BVAO was compared between EVT and conventional treatment. Outcomes were evaluated using modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 3 months follow-up. Within the study period, 17 of 2,655 acute ischemic stroke patients were diagnosed with ischemic stroke with symptomatic BVAO. The median age of these patients was 70 (interquartile range 44–89) years, and 13 (76%) were male. Seven patients received emergent EVT with stenting and 10 patients received conventional medical treatment only. Nine of 10 patients with conventional treatment had in-hospital stroke progression and developed new ischemic lesions in the pons and midbrain. Five patients with fetal and hypoplastic posterior communicating artery presented bilateral cerebral peduncular lesions. At 3 months follow-up, 6 patients (35%) had favorable outcomes (mRS 0–2), of which 5 were treated with vertebral artery stenting and 1 received conventional treatment. Ischemic stroke in patients with acute symptomatic BVAO is uncommon. However, stroke progression is common, and the prognosis of most patients is poor. Rescue management such as EVT might be considered for symptomatic BVAO.
