Vol.18 No.8
(Background and Purpose) China’s improved housing policies for seniors have led to a rise in home care, but also an increase in accidents. Untidy spaces, material defects, and uneven floors are the main culprits. Experts propose the CMF (colors, material, and finish) principle to evaluate the living spaces of seniors. This study thus focuses on creating safer living spaces for seniors by prioritizing the color, material, and finishing of their residences using CMF. (Methods) Spatial color, quality, and details were identified as the primary investigation directions for the three residential areas. A comprehensive set of residential safety evaluation standards was established using CMF as the central component. On-site investigation techniques and third-party inspections were used to evaluate the safety status of the residences. (Results) According to the survey results for spatial color (C), none of the participants met the 7:1 color contrast standard outlined in WCAG2. Additionally, during the investigation of spatial quality (M), it was discovered that some residential floors had wear and tear, cracked walls, and poor wear-resistant wall coatings that impacted the residence’s durability. The aluminum alloy material used in commercial housing did not possess the necessary strength, and the composite woodboard used as a base material for kitchen worktops displayed signs of damage and decay. In welfare housing, the metal on the kitchen top is deformed, posing a safety hazard. However, no harmful effects resulting from excessive environmental pollutants released from wall and ceiling coatings were detected onsite. Finally, the spatial details (F) of the survey object are based on the standard of a friction coefficient ≥ 0.5, and the material surface is treated with a rough texture to have a significant anti-slip effect. Mosaic tiles and concrete floors have certain difficulties in adhering to the standards of convex and concave surfaces ≤2.0 mm. (Conclusions) It may be beneficial for homeowners to carefully consider the use of color in living spaces, paying particular attention to the visual needs of elderly individuals. Meeting the 7:1 color contrast ratio outlined in the WCAG can be helpful in achieving this goal. Additionally, it is important to ensure that all materials used in homes meet the necessary quality standards, as this can have a significant impact on the safety and well-being of elderly residents. Any damaged material should be promptly replaced. Finally, it is important to consider the specific needs of elderly individuals during the finishing process, with a focus on anti-slip performance and surface flatness to ensure maximum safety.
