Efficacy of Acid Cleaning on the Deoxidation of Titanium Powder Using Calcium

The optimum acid cleaning conditions for removing CaO formed by the reaction of Ca with Ti powder were investigated in this study. In this experiment, we used Ti powders composed of irregular polygonal Ti particles with average sizes of 125 mm and 250 μm. Ca granules were charged at 50% of the Ti mass into a deoxidation pot with Ti powder, and then the Ti powder with the Ca granules was deoxidized at 800 °C in a vacuum atmosphere of 5.0 × 10-4 torr. It was confirmed that subsequent acid cleaning with 10% HCl for 5 minutes reduced the initial oxygen concentration of the 125 μm-sized Ti powder from 2,000 ppm to 1,105 ppm. In the case of the non-contact deoxidation using Ca vapor at 900 °C, it was established that the non-contact deoxidation effect was higher than the contact type under the optimum acid cleaning condition of 10% HCl for 5 minutes. XRD and SEM analyses detected some Ca particles, and residual CaO on the Ti powder surface was confirmed without acid cleaning, but the acid cleaning process completely removed the residual CaO. It was also found that the deoxidation and acid cleaning decreased the c/a axial ratio of the Ti powder from 1.5885 to 1.5851.

We experienced a case of bronchial asthma and rhinitis induced by rice-bran extract. A 35-year-old female patient, operating a rice store for 9 years, developed rhinorrhea, sneezing, chest discomfort and dyspnea after handling the rice. Total eosinophil count was 244/mnf and total IgE level by PRIST was 211.4 IU/ml. Some of inhalant allergens presented positive response on skin prick test, but negative response in IgE-RAST. Skin test using rice-bran extracts made with phenolized saline showed strong positive response(20x10/40x40mm). Bronchoprovocation test performed with 1:100 dilut- ed rice-bran extract led to immediate respiratory symptoms and more than 50% fall of FEV, and FEF. It was suggested that rice-bran itself and/or storage mite (A. siro?) which was found in rice-bran samples from her own store may be contributable to the development of her respiratory symptoms.

The ecology of house dust mites, Dermatophagoides species, were studied in the house dusts of the allergic patients(n=76) with positive skin reactivity to house dust mites The specific IgE of house dust mites were measured in their sera and compared with house dust mites inhabiting in the dusts, l. 73 cases out of 76 were tested specific IgE of house dust mites 20 cases(26. 4%) Out Of 73 showed no detectable specific IgE in their sera by RAST. 36 cases(47.4%,) noted specific IgE of both kinds of Dermatophagoides species, and 14 cases(18.4%) had specific IgE of D. farinae only and 3(4%) had D, pteronyssinus specific IgE only. 2. In 58(56.9%) out of 108 house dusts sarnples which were collected from bed clothes, blankets, sofas, and carpets in 76 patients houses there were over 100 mites per gm of house dust. And 17.7%, of samples showed over 500 mites per gm of dust, There was no specific differences in numbers of house dust mites among seasons collected. 3 In the samples out of 76 patients houses there were no Dermatophagoides species in 5(6.6%) patients house dusts. Both, D, pteronyssinus and D, farinae were detected in 49(64.4%), D pteronyssinus only in 16(21.1%) and D farinae only in 4(7 %). In this study there has been noted some differences between dominant species of house dust mites in the house dusts and specific IgE of mites sensitized in the patients. For confirmation of the influences of environmental and/or genetic factors about these discripancies, careful mite ecology in the individual patients home e.,vironment and IgE immune responses to each species of house dust mites remain to be evaluated further
