Objectives : The aim of this study is to obtain the basic knowledge for safer clinical use of oxymetazoline, one of nasal decongestants, by observing changes of ciliary activity and histopa-thologic findings after topical application of oxymetazoline to the cultured human basak mucosa. Methods : The nasal mucosa, obtained from the inferior tubinates in healthy non-smokers without any nasal symptoms or signs, was cultured and then, exposed to oxymetazoline solu-tion at different concentrations from 0.0123% to 0.25%, containing no preservatives. Ciliary activity was observed under an inverted microscope and the histopathology of the mucosa was examined by light microscopy 1,3,6,12,24 and 48 hours after exposure, respectively. Results : Oxymetazoline impaired ciliary activity and induced mucosal injury at dose-and time-dependent patterns. Once the ciliary activity disappeared, it was not restored at least for the next 48 hours. Furthermore, these functional and morphologic changes resulted from applying oxymetazoline at the concentration of clinical use. Conclusion : Oxymetazoline as a topical vasoconstrictor should be administered for the mini-mal period even at clinical dose.

Background and Objectives:The aims of the current study are to reintroduce a surgical technique for endoscopic removal of the antral portion of antrochoanal polyp (ACP) by powered instrumentation and to determine its eficacy by evaluating the outcome of the patients. Materials and Method:sinus surgery for ACP by the authors surgical technique. Improvements of clinical symptoms and endoscopic and computed tomographic findings were evaluated postoperatively with a follow-up period ranging from 12 to 52 months. All symptom scores on a 100 mm visual analog scale before operation were compared with those obtained at the last visit after operation. Postoperative endoscopic and computed tomographic findings were graded using a three-point scale ranging from 0 to 2. In the surgical technique, the antral portion of ACP was identified through the enlarged ostium under intranasal endoscopy and removed by a blade of powered instrumentation that was inserted through the canine fossa. Results:Symptom scores were all significantly reduced postoperatively. All but one patient showed improvement in clinical symptoms and endoscopic and computed tomographic findings during the follow-up period. There were no major complications specific to this technique. Conclusion:This technique provides an attractive alternative to other methods for removing the antral portion of ACP and is associated with excellent outcomes and the minimal morbidities rate. This study has been attempted to find out how the learning with the introduction of the physical environmental variant in earth science teaching-learning scene in high school can be approached to the goals of science education. And it also aims to seek for an effective teaching method of earth science education. The effectiveness of learning between two groups has been compared: the experimental group and the control group. According to the result of this research, the effectiveness of learning of the experimental group in the science branch of high school has been much higher than the control group while in the humanities branch, the effectiveness between the two groups is not conspicuous. In conclusion, the result of introducing suitable environmental variant into teaching-learning scene enhances the effectiveness of learning, and can be one of the desirable approaches to science education.

We examine the edge stress and the dislocations near the edge region of the silicon nitride film using X-ray topography. Silicon nitride film represents tensile stress of 9.2?0^(8) N/㎡ and this stress is proportional to the film thickness. In addition, It is confirmed that the symmetrical deformation in substrate is caused by the edge stress. Dislocations induced from the stress relaxation become increased as the heat treatment temperature is high. Also, the critical reference for dislocation depression is deter-mined with the generation rate per the border length of the pattern for the mm-unit-pattern. And the critical reference for the μm-unit-pattern is determined with the pattern fineness.
