The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of testing sign language elicitation materials from Germany with deaf people in Korea. The paper presents the relevance of elicitation materials in sign language research and gives an overview of the different types of elicitation techniques and stimuli. The researchers have selected, adapted and tested 11 of 23 tasks of the data collection of the DGS Corpus Project. After having described the individual tasks and the applicability testing procedure, the researchers present their results and discuss the reasons why some elicitation materials only worked to a limited extent despite prior adjustments. The results show how important it is to sufficiently consider the different cultures of hearing and deaf people in Germany and Korea in order to enable smooth and effective data collection.
Second-trimester fetal genetic ultrasonography to detect chromosomal abnormalities
홍성은 대한의학유전학회 2014 대한의학유전학회지 Vol.11 No.2
Genetic ultrasonography refers to the evaluation of risk of chromosomal abnormalities via various soft sonographic markers. Although the maternal serum test is the primary screening method for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic ultrasonography isalso widely used and can help increase detection rates. To date, many soft markers, including choroid plexus cysts, echogenicintracardiac foci, mild ventriculomegaly, nuchal fold thickening, echogenic bowel, mild pyelectasis, short femur and humeruslength, and absent or hypoplastic nasal bone, have been reported. An aberrant right subclavian artery was the most novel softmarker introduced. Because these soft markers involve diverse relative risks of chromosomal abnormalities, it is difficult toapply them to clinical practice. To optimize the efficacy of genetic ultrasonography, it is important to understand the preciserelative risks of chromosomal abnormalities innumerous soft markers and integrate these risks with each other and the resultsof maternal serum screening.

Objective: This study was designed to analyze the clinical features of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients who attended a Korean medicine hospital and the treatment effects through retrospective chart reviews. Methods: The medical records of 82 outpatients who had been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and visited the Allergy, Immune, and Respiratory System Department of Kyung Hee Korean Medicine Hospital from 8 January 2015 to 8 January 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. To assess the treatment outcomes, we used the FVC (Forced Vital Capacity), DLCO (Diffusing capacity of the Lung for CO), 6-minute walk test, and HRCT (High Resolution Computed Tomography). Results: The study group consisted of 28 females and 54 males. The median age of the patients was 67.98±11.44 years. The chief complaints were cough (n=51) and dyspnea (n=49). Other frequent symptoms were general weakness (n=8), weight loss (n=4), and a fever (n=2). A total of 77 (93.90%) patients were prescribed Korean herbal medicine, and 52 (63.41%) patients were treated with acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, ICT, or pharmacopuncture. After treatments, FVC, DLCO, the 6-minute walk test, and HRCT were maintained or worsened slightly. Conclusions: This study presented the characteristics of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients treated by Korean medical therapies, and further studies of Korean medical treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients would be valuable.
S-501 OXIDATIVE STRESS CAN PREDICT MORTALITY IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING HEMODIALYSIS
홍성은,송영림,김좌경,김성균,김형직 대한내과학회 2016 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2016 No.1
Purpose: Increased oxidative stress is regarded as an important non-traditional risk factor in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). However, studies examining the effect of oxidative stress are limited. Methods: In this study, two markers of oxidative stress, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl levels were measured in 88 HD patients. Also, serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin (IL)-6 were measured. Primary endpoints were the occurrence of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results: The mean age was 60.5±13.5 years, and the median dialysis duration was 42.5 months. In total, 23 patients died during a mean follow-up period of 43.3±9.0 months. The two oxidative stress markers had a strong association with Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), serum albumin, IL-6, and hs-CRP levels. In the univariate analyses, the highest quartile of serum MDA or protein carbonyl was a significant predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. After adjusting for age, sex, diabetes, cause of renal disease, dialysis vintage, CCI, dialysis adequacy, albumin, and IL-6 level, the highest quartile of the serum MDA or protein carbonyl level was an independent determinant of all-cause (MDA: HR, 3.26; 95% CI, 1.27-8.34; protein carbonyl: HR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.11-8.95) and cardiovascular mortality (MDA: HR, 3.59; 95% CI, 1.16-12.16; protein carbonyl: HR, 3.16; 95% CI, 1.25-15.47). Conclusions: Increased oxidative stress could be an important predictor of long-term outcomes in patients undergoing HD.
Numerical study of a vane vacuum pump with two-phase flows
홍성은,손기헌 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.7
A vane vacuum pump is used for brake boosters in automobiles. In this study, the pump is investigated numerically by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent dissipation rate with a commercial CFD code, FLUENT. Dynamic mesh method is used to treat the vane rotation of a vane and an eccentric rotor in the pump. The volume-of-fluid method is also employed to consider the lubrication oil which is used to seal the gaps between the moving and stationary parts in of the vane pump. Numerical results demonstrate the flow and pressure characteristics in of the vane vacuum pump. The effects of check valve and groove on the pump performance are quantified.
