Vol.- No.105

This article analyzes theory of production which plays a key role in Walter Benjamin's literary criticism. Theory of reflection posits that the social institutions of a given society are a product of that society's values and beliefs, which are encompassed under the term ‘culture.’ Within this theory, society is seen as a manifestation of a culture's values and beliefs, much in the same way Karl Marx viewed society and culture as a reflection of the economy. However, Benjamin endeavored to develop a theory of art that would be ""useful for the formulation of revolutionary demands in the politics of art,"" arguing that, in the absence of any traditional or ritualistic value, art in the age of mechanical reproduction would necessarily be politically based.

Vol.21 No.2

AbstractPolitics of Love in D. H. Lawrence`s EssaysSangmoon Huh (Yeugnam U)The life of D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was under the tremendous changes in culture, politics, economics, and philosophy. The development of science accelerated modernization and more information led to new inventions and explorations of civilization. Lawrence`s works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. In them, Lawrence confronts issues related to emotional health, vitality, and instincts against modernization and civilization. He continually sought the means to overcome the alienation typical of industrialized society through the fusion of man with woman, man with man, and man with nature. This study examines politics of love in Lawrence`s essays which reflect the political, economic, religious circumstances in the early twentieth century. Lawrence says that the most sacred thing is love and the sacred can be realized in the love between a man and a woman. Only in love can man restore his true emotional self. Lawrence writes that "it is the problem of to-day, the establishment of a new relation, or the readjustment of the old one, between men and women." Lawrence`s views about relations between the sexes, and about sex differences are perhaps among his most controversial-and they have frequently been misrepresented. Lawrence emphasizes that the most important thing for the true recovery of modern civilization and society is the establishment of new appearances of love between the sexes. In brief, Lawrence`s politics of love embodies the new cultural spirit in which the individual sexual desire and political aspiration are essentially connected.

Vol.11 No.2

James Joyce is concerned with the relationship between myth and its literary expression, and some of his novels are perhaps based on the mythology. In this respect, this thesis aims to study his views on mythology and its literary relations with special reference to his novels, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysseys. In his novels Joyce develops mythic symbols and artistic creation elaborately. Joyce thinks that almost all his novels are a flight into the art from the real world. For example, Stephen Dedalus in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man like Icarus in Greek myth tried to escape from the situation of the paralysis. In the end of the novel, Stephen declares that "I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." In addition, Joyce`s mind is fettered by symbols drawn from mythology and history. The mythology congenial to him is partly Celtic, but the Greek myth is also very important to him. In Ulysses Joyce rewrites the myth of the Odyssey, one of the most well-known stories in the Western world. Ulysses unveils the basic assumptions of the Odyssey and subverts the world of myth through characters in the novel. Therefore, Joyce makes use of the mythological symbols and rituals to express the change of human civilization with much success in his novels.

Vol.17 No.1

We live in an age of ecological imagination as a result of the overwhelming development of industry and technology, which has been persisting for past centuries. In the process of industrialization, nature is considered to be a means to achieve the maximum level of production-to be exploited without having its own intrinsic value. Many ecologists are concerned with the origin of the present global ecological crisis, the most effective method to overcome it, and alternative forms of society. They object to the exploitation of nature by humans, suggesting that the prevailing social value of anthropocentrism is the origin of the crisis. By ecology, we mean the body of knowledge concerning the economy of nature-the investigation of the total relations of the animal both to its inorganic and to its organic environment: above all, its friendly and inimical relations with those animals and plants with which it comes directly or indirectly into contact. Recent developments in ecological and environmental thinking have provided us with an opportunity to read D. H. Lawrence`s literary works from a new perspective. In spite of the critics who consider that nature in Lawrence`s works is not an end in itself but a means to reach something beyond, we should take into account the fact that Lawrence considered nature a living entity. In his works, nature and human beings have a very intimate relationship and are not alienated from each other. In his view, nature is always in the process of creation. To Lawrence, therefore, it is unthinkable to separate man from nature. As we look into the ecological consciousness and Green thinking in Lawrence`s literary works, it seems clear that he tries to reconcile the ecological problems that result from the ruling and ruled relationships of these days by grasping the relationship of human and nature as the equal thing of brotherliness.

Vol.35 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to clarify how Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’urbervilles is dramatized in for BBC’s drama or Roman Polanski’s film work in the course of translating the adapted novel into picture media. The relationship between the original work and film work, including BBC’s drama, has evolved and grown over the years, Yet the most common discussions on this issue have centered on the notion of faithfulness of the adapted film and BBC’s drama. Roman Polanski’s Tess and BBC’s drama Tess of the D’urbervilles are faithful to the contents of the original text but Polanski’s Tess transforms the image of Tess. Tess in his film is depicted as an object of visual beauty rather than as an independent woman in the novel. Hardy said that the original tragic source comes from Immanent Will. This type of analysis of this paper performs a basic comparison between a work of novel and its adapted film with the basic goals of evaluating whether these tragic factors show “true fidelity” to the text.
