Purpose: To evaluate the relations between progression of glaucoma in visual field and peripapillary area change in normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Methods: We respectively evaluated 66 patients (66 eyes) with normal tension glaucoma; these patients were classified as progressive glaucoma group and non-progressive glaucoma group by visual field test. Interobserver and intraobserver agreement was evaluated for qualitative assessment. Zone β change was measured by Image J (National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA) by two methods. One method used paired t-test and the other method used CV (correlation of variation) to define significant progression of zone β. Results: 46 patients (46 eyes) were classified as progressive glaucoma and 20 patients (20 eyes) were classified as non-progressive glaucoma. There was no statistically significant different change of zone β between two groups and there were no changes of zone β over coefficient of variation (CV). Conclusions: The measurement of change of zone β seems to be of no use in recognition of progression in normal tension glaucoma. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2012;53(6):807-812

Active pixel design using the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process is acompelling solution for use in X-ray imaging detectors because of its excellent electronic noisecharacteristics. We have investigated the imaging performance of a CMOS active pixel photodiodearray coupled to a granular phosphor through a fiber-optic faceplate for mammographic applications. The imaging performance included the modulation-transfer function (MTF), noise-power spectrum(NPS), and detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Because we observed a nonlinear detector responseat low exposures, we used the linearization method for the analysis of the DQE. The linearizationmethod uses the images obtained at detector input, which are converted from those obtained atdetector output by using the inverse of the detector response. Compared to the conventionalmethod, the linearization method provided almost the same MTF and a slightly lower normalizedNPS. However, the difference between the DQE results obtained by using the two methods wassignificant. We claim that the conventional DQE analysis of a detector having a nonlinear responsecharacteristic can yield wrong results. Under the standard mammographic imaging condition, weobtained a DQE performance that was competitive with the performances of conventional flat-panelmammography detectors. We believe that the CMOS detector investigated in this study can besuccessfully used for mammography.

Mass mortalities of farmed shellfish, mostly in summer season, thus named mass summer mortalities, have been a global issue in shellfish aquaculture. The 2013 mass summer mortalities in the confined waters of Goseong Bay, Goseong, Korea were quite a unique and intensive for two farmed species, the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, and bay scallops, Argopecten irradians. The mortalities were progressive from the bottom of the suspended oysters and caged scallops in the waters, reaching up to 80% for the oyster and 95% for the scallop in about 20 days after the first occurrence, early August, 2013. We monitored a wide range of environmental factors, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, turbidity, acidity (pH), organic and inorganic matters, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspected pathogenic agent, and phytoplankton composition throughout the water column where the two species were suspended or caged. Our survey concluded that the hypoxia or anoxia might be a major cause of the mortalities. Here, we detailed the mortalities and ways to arrive at the conclusion.
