동약의학에서 강정 강장제로서 귀히 여겨지는 녹용의 유효성분과 또한 녹각과 그 유효성의 차이를 찾기 위해 무기질, 아미노산과 지방산 조성 등을 비교 검토하였다. 무기질 조성은 녹용과 녹각에서 Ca의 함량이 제일 높았고, Na과 K 함량도 상당히 높았으며 Hg 등 중금속은 전혀 검출되지 않았으며, 녹각에서는 Mn과 Fe이 미량 검출되었다. 녹용의 지방산은 포화지방산 보다 불포화지방산 함량이 월등히 높았으며 그 중에서도 동맥경화증을 경감시킨다고 하는 docosahexaenoic acid가 43.73%로 제일 높았고, 녹각에서는 녹용에 비해 전반적으로 함량이 낮았다. 아미노산은 녹용에서 총 17종이 검출되었는데, glycine 함량이 제일 높았고, alanine과 proline 순이었다. 이는 collagen이 녹용의 상당부분을 차지한다는 것을 시사하며, 녹각에서는 비록 함량은 적었지만 10종이 검출되었으며, glutamic acid, proline, glycine과 alanine 등도 상당히 함유되어 있었다. The unossified pilose antler of Cervus cornu parvum is one of the valuable crude drugs in oriental medicine and has been used for the treatment of neurosis, impotence, seminal emission and premature ejaculation. Our studies were tried to evaluate chemical components such as minerals, fatty acids and amino acids of antler and old antler. In antler and old antler Ca content was higher than any other minerals and followed by Na and K. Predominant fatty acid was docosahexaenoic acid(43.73%) in antler. Among 17 amino acids glycine was the most abundant in antler. But 7 kinds of amino acids including cysteine were not detected in old antler.
Benzo$(\alpha)pyrene$에 의해 유도된 흰쥐의 간 장해에 미치는 강활 Methanol 추출물의 효과

To evaluate the preventive effects of methanolic extract of Angelica koreana(MEAK), this extract was given to rats orally at various doses of 10, 50 and 100 mg/kg before hepatotoxicant, benzo$(\alpha)pyrene$ treatment The increased serum enzyme levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) by benzo$(\alpha)pyrene$ induction were significantly lowered in a dose dependent manner after pretreatment with MEAK. Furthermore, MEAK also decreased the elevated lipid levels after benzo$(\alpha)pyrene$ administration. These results revealed that MEAK could afford a significant protective action in the alleviation of benzoBenzo$(\alpha)pyrene$ induced hepatocellular injury.

The protective and therapeutic effects of Alismatis Rhizoma extracts on rat liver injury induced by carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbon, benzo(a)pyrene were investigated in rats. Serum and liver triglyceride, total-cholesterol level and serum HDL-cholesterol content were measured. Alismatis Rhizoma extracts inhibited the enhanced production of lipid in chemically induced liver injury. Among 4 fractions, CHCh fraction revealed the most powerful liver-protective effect. Our results strongly suggest that Alismatis Rhizoma be a promising liver-protective agent.
소환시 발생되는 아황산 가스가 흰쥐 혈청 중의 효소 활성도 및 지질 함량에 미치는 영향

Recently, incidences of pulmonary-related diseases are increasing and natural ecosystem is destroyed year by year owing to air pollutions by industrial noxious gases such as sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, etc. Sulfur dioxide produced by oxidation of sulfur compounds is water soluble and causes several kinds of pulmonary diseases, damaging on plants and animals. This study was undertaken to investigate effects of acute exposure of rats to sulfur dioxide using biochemical parameters. The sAST (aspartate transaminase) activity was not significantly affected but sALT (alanine transaminase), sLDH (lactate dehydrogenase) and sALP (alkaline phosphatase) activities were significantly increased by acute sulfur dioxide gas exposure. Also sulfur dioxide gas treatment significantly diminished serum cholinesterase activity. The total lipid, triglyceride, total-, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol contents were significantly increased by sulfur dioxide gas exposures. But the body and liver weight were generally diminished in comparison with control group. Our results' showed increased enzyme activities and lipid contents, but body and liver weight were all diminished by sulfur dioxide gas treatment.

Selaginellae Herba has been used as folk medicine for antineoplastics, coagulants, antidotes and invigorants. To find an in vitro screening method for liver protective effect of Selaginellae Herba in benzo(a)pyrene intoxicated injury were examined in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. Using MTT assay, herba concentration showed dose dependently viability. The lowest concentration of benzo(a)pyrene giving cytotoxicity revealed around 50gM. The hepatoprotective effect of Selaginellae Herba in both water and chloroform extracts was also increased dose dependently.

The tetrazolium dye, 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-y1)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), is reduced by live but not dead cell, and this reaction is used as the end point in a rapid drug screening assay. It can also be used for accurate determinations of drug sensitivity but only if a quantative relationship is established between cell number and MTT-formazan production. Several conditions were examined to devise an in vitro assay method in primary cultured hepatocytes, such as optimum wavelength, optimal MTT concentration, optimal incubation time, and cell density.

The primary enzymatic steps in ethanol metabolism to acetaldeh-yde, acetate and CO_2+water have been known for many decades, but only a few clinical implications were recognized, such as the risk of malnutrition due to use of alcohol as a source of calories, and the use of disulfiram and other ALDH blockers in the treatment of alcoholism. This review dealt briefly with current research aspects on alcohol metabolism and alcohol-related organic damage.

In oriental medicine several valuabel prescriptions for hepatic diseases usually contained the Bupleuri Radix and Scutellariae Radix. The possible protective effect of these oriental herb on hepatotoxicity induced with benzo(a)pyrene(B(a)P) in vivo were examined. Water extracts of Bupleleuri Radix, Scutellariae Radix and the mixture of both Radix were separately administered by orally to rats with hepatic demage induced by B(a)P(0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) and their effects in the serum were biochemically investigated. B(a)P treated group had siginificantly increased AST, ALT, ALP and LDH activities of Radix, Scutellariae Radix significantly diminished these increased enzyme activities. Increased total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol contents of serum by B(a)P injection were decreased by administration of water extract of Bupleuri Radix, Scutellariae Radix and mixture. Favorable results of this experiments indicate that herb mixture can be considered as a good therapeutic agent for the treatment of hepatic injury.
