For the investigation of the physical growth of Korean Middle School Boys, the strature, span, lengths of upper and lower extremities, and body weight of 5,566 boys ranging from I2 to I5 years of age, and calculated the correlation coefficients among all of the items in each age group. The following conclusions have been obtained. 1. The average statures are 147.13 cm in 12 years of a8e, 161.90 cm in 15 years of age, and the annual growth I^∽ 4.92 cm. 2. The average spans are 145.69cm in 12 years of age, 162.07 cm in 15 years of age, and the annual growth is 5.46cm. 3. The average 1engths of upper extremity are 65.26 cm in 12 years of age. 72.20 cm in 15 years of age, and the annual growth is 2.31cm. 4. The average lengths of lower extremity are 81.71 cm in 12 years of age, 89.27 cm in 15 years of age, and the annual growth is 2.52cm. 5. The average body weights are 38.69 kg in 12 years of age, 51. 44 kg In 15 years of age, and the annual growth is 4.25 kg. 6. As a whole, the stature lengths of upper and lower extremities and body weight grow most speedly between 14 and 15 years of age groups. 7 The correlation coefficients between stature vs. span, lengths of upper and lower extremities, and span vs. lengths of upper and lower extremities are over than 0.8, representing very high. 8. The correlation coefficients among upper vs. lower extremity lengths, and body weight vs. stature, span, lengths of upper and lower extremities are over than 0.6, representing relatively high. 9. Above mentioned all of the correlation coefficients show to decrease with increasing age, but the correlation coefficients between lengths of upper and lower extremities show no differencies with increasing age. 10. The regression equations among all of the items in each age group are fabled for reference.

The authors retrospectively analized the radiographs and medical records of 135 consecutive patients who underwent minimaly invasive spinal surgery from January. 1990 to December, 1994 at our institution. Among these, 72 patients have had chemonucleolysis and ethers percutaneous automated lumbar discectomy(PALD). The success rate was similar in both groups. ie. 75% in chemonucleoiysis and 74.6% in PALD by Macnab's criteria. The higher success rate could be obtained in 1) younger age below 30. 2) predominant sciatica than lower back pain. 3) eccentric bulged disc with minimal degeneration. 4) abscent of minimal neurologic dsficits. In conclusion. provided patients are carefully screened, minimal invasive spinal surgery is more preferable over conventional surgery, providing a safe and effective therapeutic alternative to many patients suffering from herniated lumbar disc.

Recently, new designaed spinal fixation device using pedicle screw was introduced and there was a trend to use this posterior short segment instrumentation. In the surgical treatment of unstable thoracolumbar spine. various methods of instrumentation have been used for stabilization of the spine. correction of deformity and reductin of fracture. painless mobilization. A further aim is to avoid late malposition and to preserve mobility. Simultaneously. it provides immediate postoperative rehabilitation without rigid external support. The authors have treated 31 cases of unstable thoracolumbar spine using VSP and C-D instrumentation at our hospital from May 1989 to March 1992. We reported the result of clinical analysis of those system.

Spontaneous cervical epidural hematoma is an infrequent entity that usually requires emergency decompression on account of impending neurologic deficit. We present a case of a 36-year-old man who visited our emergency room complaining of severe neck pain with progressive weakness of both upper extrmities. On cervical MRI fusiform epidural hematoma was found extending from the fifth to the seventh cervical vertebrae. Emergency surgical evacuation was performed. The patient was fully recovered and discharged uneventfully
