Over the last decades regional integration has become the main focus of theorists’ and practitioners’ debate. At the same time, in East Asia, the regionalization has gained more attention among the ASEAN member countries. Thus in this paper, it is endeavored to propose a certain theoretical approach for studying the historical development and dynamics of the process of cooperation in the region. It is to evaluate the current situation and to predict future trends at the regional level. We will discuss about regional integration in East Asia with three different aspects and conclusion. In the first part, We will explain the politico-economic theories of regional integration including federalism, functionalism, neo-functionalism, institutionalism and constructivism. Next, it is attempted to briefly explain the economic integration theories, both static and dynamic. Then, the current development of regionalism in East Asia is analyzed through the studied theoretical background. 지난 십 수년간 지역통합은 이론가들과 실무진 사이에서 많은 논란을 일으키는 주요 주제가 되어왔다. 또한, 동아시아의 ASEAN 회원국들 사이에서도 지역통합은 많은 주목을 받아왔다. 따라서 이번 연구를 통해 이들 ASEAN 회원국 간의 지역협력 과정에서 일어난 역사적 발전상과 국가 간의 역학관계를 살펴봄으로써 이론적 접근을 시도하고자 한다. 우리는 동아시아 지역의 지역통합에 대해 세 가지 다른 관점으로 논의하고자 한다. 첫 번째로 우리는 연방주의, 기능주의 신 기능주의, 제도주의, 그리고 구성주의 등의 다양한 정치경제적 지역통합이론을 설명할 것이다. 그리고 정적, 동적 접근법을 통한 경제통합이론을 설명할 것이다. 마지막으로 현재 동아시아 지역의 지역주의의 발전과정을 상기 논의한 이론적 고찰을 토대로 분석할 것이다.
