The Current Status of Sex Education in South Korea and Its Relations with the Increase of Sex Crimes

Due to the increasing rate of sex crimes in South Korea, there have been efforts to find ways to reduce sex crimes and many experts have indicated that the distorted perception and culture on sexuality and the lack of awareness of equality for all human beings as one of the possible reasons for the increase in sex crimes. Many scholars point out that Korean sex education system in schools has been blamed for its shortcomings in teaching students on complexities of human connections, emotional elements and social equality. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to find out how effective Korean sex education actually is and conduct a survey to see how Korean students feel about the quality of the sex education they received in an effort to analyze the materials used for sex education in Korea. Also, by comparing Korean students’ responses with foreigner students’ responses, suggestions for possible improvement on sex education materials may be induced.
