        Comparisons of Three Indicators for Frey’s Syndrome: Subjective Symptoms, Minor’s Starch Iodine Test, and Infrared Thermography

        Objectives. To correlate Frey’s syndrome with subjective symptoms, Minor’s starch iodine test results, and infrared thermography measurements, and to discuss the utility of thermography as a quantitative diagnostic method. Methods. This study included 59 patients who underwent unilateral parotidectomy. A subjective clinical questionnaire and an objective Minor’s starch iodine test were performed to evaluate the incidence of Frey’s syndrome. Infrared thermography was performed, and the subjects were divided into seven groups according to the temperature differences between operated and unoperated sites. The thermal differences were correlated with the results from Minor’s starch iodine test and the subjective symptoms questionnaire. Results. Of the 59 patients, 20 patients (33.9%) reported subjective symptoms after eating; 30 patients (50.8%) tested positive for Minor’s starch iodine test, 19 patients (63.3%) of which reported subjective symptoms. Of the 29 patients who were negative for the iodine test, 2 patients (6.9%) reported subjective symptoms. Thus, subjective symptoms were well correlated with Minor’s starch iodine test (r=0.589, P<0.001). As the thermal differences with infrared thermography increased, the number of patients with subjective symptoms increased (χ2=22.5, P<0.001). Using infrared thermography, the mean temperature difference in the positive group for the iodine test was 0.82°C±0.26°C, and that in the negative group was 0.10°C±0.47°C. With increased thermal differences, more patients showed positivity in the iodine test (χ2=29.9, P<0.001). Conclusion. Subjective symptoms, Minor’s starch iodine test, and infrared thermography are well correlated with one another. Quantitative thermography provides clues for the wide variation in the incidence of Frey’s syndrome, and could be a useful method for diagnosing and studying Frey’s syndrome.

        Carcinoma Showing Thymus-like Differentiation (CASTLE) with Non-Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve: A Case Report

        Carcinoma showing thymus-like element (CASTLE) is a very rare malignant neoplasm in the lower portion of the thyroid gland or soft tissue of the neck. Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is the most frequent site of CASTLE. Non-RLN is also a rare anomaly. Both CASTLE and non-RLN are risk factors for vocal cord paralysis. In this report, the authors describe a 73-year-old patients diagnosed with CASTLE and non-RLN. During total thyroidectomy, one RLN was sacrificed inevitably because of tumor invasion, while the other non-RLN was successfully saved, which was expected based on preoperative computed tomography (CT). If the diagnosis is uncertain, CT should be checked to prevent unexpected risks.

        초등학교 초임 체육 전담교사의 교사 학습 공동체 참여 경험에 관한 내러티브

        The purpose of this study was to present the story of a beginning elementary physical education(PE) teacher who not only overcomes the difficulties of teaching PE also learn and practice the teacher knowledge by the participation experience of Teacher Learning Community(TLC). For this purpose narrative method was used in this study to understand what is the problems which a beginning teacher encounter and what TLC impacts on the beginning teacher. The educational meanings were derived from mainly the story of TLC members’ interactions. As results, the participation experience of a beginning teacher was reconstructed metaphorically into four seasons(spring, summer, autumn, and winter) and the basic data necessary for the internalization of school PE through the TLC were presented. Based on the results, we offered some follow-up steps for activating TLC. 본 연구는 초등학교 초임 체육 전담교사가 교사 학습 공동체에 참여하게 되는 과정과 그 결과를 제시함으 로써 학교 현장에서 마주하는 체육수업의 어려움을 극복하고 체육 수업에서의 교사 역할에 대해 배워가고 실천해 가는 초임 교사의 이야기를 드러내는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 내러티브 접근을 활용하여 초임 교사의 교사 학습 공동체 참여 경험을 살펴보면서 교사 학습 공동체 속에서 일어나는 구성원 간 상호작용 에 의한 효과와 의미에 초점을 맞추어 교육적 의미를 도출하였다. 연구결과는 ‘봄’, ‘여름’, ‘가을’, ‘겨울’의 사계절의 순환적 흐름과 특징에 빗대어 내러티브로 제시하였으며 이는 다시 초임교사의 ‘성장통’, ‘배움’, ‘주인의식’으로 요약된다. 결론적으로 교사 학습 공동체가 초임교사가 체육수업에서 당면하는 교육적 어려 움을 해소하고 초임 교사의 수업 전문성의 신장을 도울 수 있는 장으로서 활용될 수 있음이 확인되었다. 한 편, 교사 학습 공동체의 활성화를 위해 필요한 사안 내지 조건으로서 운영의 자율성, 유인 요소의 강화, 교 육청과의 긴밀한 협력 강화 등이 제안되었다.

        와우와 내이도를 침범한 진주종 1예

        Labyrinthine fistula caused by cholesteatoma can make various complications according to the site of the lesion. The lateral canal, superior canal ampulla, posterior canal and promontory of the cochlea are the common areas of fistulization. However, invasion into the cochlea or internal auditory canal (IAC) is very rare. We have experienced a case of cholesteatoma extending into the cochlea and IAC, which was successfully treated via the transotic approach. Herein we report this case with a review of literature.

        Association between BMI for Obesity and Distress about Appearance in Korean Adolescents

        Background: Previous research has related obesity to body dissatisfaction and low self- esteem. This study aimed to evaluate this relation between obesity and distress about appearance. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey for 288,390 participants assessed from 2009 to 2012. The participants were categorized according to body mass index; obese, overweight, healthy weight, and underweight. The relation between obesity and distress was analyzed using simple and multiple logistic regression with complex sampling adjusted for age, sex, region of residence, economic level, parental education level, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits as confounders. Results: The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) was higher for participants with obesity (AOR for healthy weight = 1.15 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.08–1.22]; AOR for overweight = 1.85 [95% CI, 1.72–1.98]; AOR for obese = 2.45 [95% CI, 2.27–2.64]; reference = underweight, P < 0.001). In males, healthy weight was associated with an AOR below 1 (AOR for healthy weight = 0.92 [95% CI, 0.85–0.99]; AOR for overweight = 1.26 [95% CI, 1.14–1.38]; AOR for obese = 1.66 [95% CI, 1.50–1.84], P < 0.001). In females, higher AORs were associated with obesity (AOR for healthy weight = 1.44 [95% CI, 1.33–1.57]; AOR for overweight = 2.71 [95% CI, 2.45–2.99]; AOR for obese = 3.71 [95% CI, 3.32–4.14], P < 0.001). Conclusion: Obesity is related to distress about appearance, and the relation is stronger in girls than in boys.

        후각역치검사, 후각인지검사와 주관적 증상간의 상관관계

        Psychophysical tests such as 16-item Korean Version of Sniffin’ Sticks test (KVSS) identification test and Butanol Threshold Test (BTT) are relatively objective tests, but such tests cannot completely explain olfactory complaints. Furthermore, the correlation between KVSS and BTT has not been validated in Korea. We evaluated subjective olfactory symptoms of patients by a questionnaire and the correlation between two tests and the symptom questionnaire. Subjects and Method:A total of 789 patients who visited olfactory clinic of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from April 2004 through July 2007 were included in this study. BTT and KVSS identification tests were performed and all the patients filled out an olfactory questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of 4 parts:general olfaction, general taste, odorspecific olfaction and quality of life. Patients were categorized into 4 groups according to KVSS identification score. KVSS identification scores 0 to 3 represent anosmia, 4 to 7 severe hyposmia, 8 to 12 mild to moderate hyposmia and 13 to 16 normosmia. We analyzed the differences in the subjective symptom questionnaire scores of 4 groups. Results:KVSS and BTT showed a significant correlation (R=.646, p<.001). Each part of the questionnaire also showed significant correlation to KVSS or BTT. The mean scores of subjective symptoms were 2.69 for anosmia, 3.04 for severe hyposmia, 3.84 for mild to moderate hyposmia and 4.02 for normal and the difference was significant. Conclusion:BTT and KVSS identification test scores and subjective symptoms exhibited significant correlations between each other and the odor-specific olfaction part of the questionnaire showed the greatest correlation to olfactory function tests.         혼합형 학습을 활용한 교육대학교 체육 교수 경험 탐구

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore in-depth the teaching experience of physical education practical training at the University of Education based on Flipped Learning and to identify its meaning and value. Methods: To this end, data were collected and analyzed using the area analysis and classification analysis of Spradley (1979) and the narrative research method of Clandinin & Connelly (2000). The researcher's own lecture experiences and materials at the University of Education were listed in chronological order and collected as field texts, which are the basis of the study. In addition, key themes were drawn through comparative analysis of these texts, focusing on the context and meaning of the study. Finally, these materials were deepened into research texts to find the educational meaning of blended learning. Results: The participants of the study presented various educational meanings derived from the blended learning of pre-service teachers by dividing them into 'telling' and 're-telling'. First, in "Telling", difficulties such as the vague beginning of physical education lectures at the college of education, exhaustion of passion, and poor educational environment were described.In "re-telling", the necessity of expanding the individual's educational capacity, the effect and educational meaning of applying blended learning, and securing educational diversity for future education were presented. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the mixed learning conducted for pre-service teachers enabled the research participants to reflect on their own class management, and contributed to expanding educational expertise and securing pre-service teacher education suitable for the changing educational environment. . Based on these research results, policy consideration and financial cooperation from education and related organizations are required for the development and dissemination of more diverse teaching and learning methods.
