Car collision analysis using a computer simulation is a method that can dramatically reduce the time and cost compared to Sled test. But this computer simulation analysis is very difficult and hard to make reliable result. We accomplished material property test for foam, padding foam, trim cover to make a seat model considered manufacturing. And we simulated the process of the trim cover surrounding the foam to applying pre-stress. We seated HRMD to check the H-point, seat back angle and backset before BioRID II seated in computer analysis program. We tested rear collision test according to Euro NCAP. We attached FSR sensor and accelerometer in headrestraint, seat back and seat cushion to check the seat pressure map, seat acceleration and dummy injury. We were compared test data and finite element model.

Although whiplash is typically classified as a minor injury in traffic accident, insurance claims for whiplash that occurs in rear-end crashes generally lead to high costs. It has been reported that the position of vehicle head restraint for preventing whiplash injury in rear crash plays an important role. In this study, the statistics of car insurance related to whiplash injury and the uses of head restraint in actual condition are surveyed. Also, head restraint of domestic vehicles is rated by measuring geometry (height and backset) to an average sized male driver at typical seat back and driver angle according to an international protocol published by Research Council for Automobile Repairs (RCAR). The 19% of measured drivers were rated good but 36% was evaluated as poor. The 28% of rated vehicles were good but 25% was rated as poor. This survey result reveals that motorists are not appropriately utilizing the head restraints. The find outs in this investigation would provide more understandings of whiplash injuries from the practical point of view and serve for introducing the countermeasures in vehicle design.

In order to supplement studies focused on comfort driving posture up to the present, an investigation of a healthy driving posture is conducted. Using Korean male test subjects who possess AM 50th percentile body size a sensibility evaluation, various bio-signal measurements, and X-radiography imaging were performed at a standard driving posture on a mid-size sedan. In addition, digital human body model was also utilized for a numerical analysis of disc pressure changes with seat back angles. Calculated lumbosacral joint force and torque from the subject tests revealed that seat back angle, pelvic tilt angle and lumber curvature were main factors influencing driver’s health posture. In conclusion, a healthy driving posture was clinically figured out and thus proposed by categorizing with the angle between seat cushion and seat back.

In this study, a finite element human model, H-comfort, has been developed in order to
assess the comfort design of the vehicular seat system in the numerical manner. The
measurements in both numerical simulations and experiments such as distribution of pressure at
the human-seat interface and transmissibility under vertical vibration, have been investigated for
rigid and soft automotive seats. The evaluation was performed for two sitting postures, sitting
with erect not support and reclined with most of the back in contact with reclined backrest.
The simulated responses of the model have been compared with the measurements of subject
and the published experimental results. The model response was found to correlate well with
the experimental measurements.
