        Promoting Mental Health Literacy at Schools in South Korea

        The onset of many lifelong mental illnesses is during childhood and adolescence. There has been an increase in these conditions among children and adolescents especially, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is essential to promote mental health literacy (MHL) as a preventive and universal intervention for children and adolescents. Positive mental health status in adolescence is related to an increased level of MHL, and various MHL programs at schools have been reported to be effective for adolescent students worldwide. Recently, MHL programs have been developed in South Korea to be used by schoolteachers. There is a need for active dissemination and development of future programs. For continuous and effective education, it is desirable to include MHL education in regular school curricula.

        정신분열병의 선택적 주의력 저하의 보상 기전

        Objectives : This study investigated the compensatory neural correlate of selective attention deficit in schizophrenics Show-ing near-normal performance. Methods : A 'modified Stroop' was developed that can be used measure the response time during functional imaging. An event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study was carried out in 10 clinically stabilized schizophrenics and 10 healthy controls during the performance of a 'modified Stroop'. In the 'modified Stroop', the subjects were required to respond with a two-button mouse to whether or not the color of a subsequent word corresponded to one of T-shirt. The significantly activated brain regions were investigated in a voxel-wise Mest of the Stroop load. Results : Schizophrenics, compared with healthy controls, showed poorer response time, but had similar accuracy. Compen-satory activation in the right inferior frontal gyms (IFG) was observed in schizophrenics. The left paracingulate sulcus was less activated in the schizophrenics than in the healthy controls. Conclusion : These results suggest that, in schizophrenics showing a normal accuracy during the Stroop, selective attention deficits might be related to the left paracingulate sulcus as well as the anterior cingulate. In addition, their deficits may be compensated with the right IFG.

      • Dual-nozzle microfluidic droplet generator

        The droplet-generating microfluidics has become an important technique for a variety of applications ranging from single cell analysis to nanoparticle synthesis. Although there are a large number of methods for generating and experimenting with droplets on microfluidic devices, the dispensing of droplets from these microfluidic devices is a challenge due to aggregation and merging of droplets at the interface of microfluidic devices. Here, we present a microfluidic dual-nozzle device for the generation and dispensing of uniform-sized droplets. The first nozzle of the microfluidic device is used for the generation of the droplets, while the second nozzle can accelerate the droplets and increase the spacing between them, allowing for facile dispensing of droplets. Computational fluid dynamic simulations were conducted to optimize the design parameters of the microfluidic device.

        하모닉 코더를 위한 직선과 이산코사인변환 (DCT)을 이용한 하모닉 크기값 (Magnitude) 양자화 기법

        본 논문은 음성신호의 주파수를 반으로 나누어 양자화 계수 추출에 직선과 DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform)를 혼합하여 사용한 양자화 기법을 제안한다. 하모닉 부호화기에서의 하모닉은 가변이므로 저주파에서의 하모닉만을 오버샘플링하여 차원을 고정한다. 고정된 차원의 스펙트럼 포락선을 직선으로 표현한 후 직선이 불연속인 주파수에서의 샘플값만을 전송한다. 이 논문에서는 저주파에서의 하모닉은 복원을 위해 고정된 직선의 계수를 사용하였고 고주파에서의 하모닉은 가변 DCT를 적용하여 직선과 DCT가 격합된 형태의 양자화기법을 제안한다. 제안된 양자화 기법의 성능평가는 스펙트럴의 크기값에 대한 Spectral Distortion (SD)값을 사용하였다. 실험결과 HVXC보다 제안된 양자화 기법의 SD가 0.3dB 정도 개선되었다. This paper presents a method of quantization to extract quantization parameters using the straight-line and DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for two splited frequency bands. As the number of harmonic is variable frame to frame, harmonics in low frequency band is oversampled to fix the dimension and straight-lines present a spectral envelope, then the discontinuous points of straight-lines in low frequency is sent to quantizer. Thus, extraction of quantization parameters using the straight-line provides a fixed dimension. Harmonics in high frequency use variable DCT to obtain quantization parameters and this paper proposes a method of quantization combining the straight-line with DCT. The measurement (If proposed method of quantization uses spectral distortion (SD) for spectral magnitudes. As a result, The proposed method of quantization improved 0.3dB in term of SD better than HVXC.

        Droplet-based Synthesis of Homogeneous Gold Nanoparticles for Enhancing HRP-based ELISA Signals

        Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have widely used for various biological applications, such as drug screening, photo-thermal therapy, and biosensing. In particular, the synthesis of AuNPs with narrow size distribution plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of nanoparticle-mediated biosensors. However, the conventional synthesis methods (e.g., citrate reduction method) still suffer from controlling the sizes of the nanoparticles. In this paper, we present the synthesis method of homogeneous AuNPs using a droplet-based microfluidic chip. Prior to experiments, we optimized the size of droplets using a simulation software for stable droplet generation. We demonstrated that the nanoparticles synthesized in our microfluidic chip system showed a narrower size distribution and a higher reproducibility compared to conventional batch synthesis. Furthermore, we observed that the signal of anti-horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was significantly enhanced by the droplet-based microfluidic chip. Therefore, our synthesis method of homogeneous AuNPs could play an important role in improving the efficiency of AuNPs-based sensing signals.

        주의력결핍 과잉행동장애 아동에서 틱 장애 동반 여부에 따른 확산 텐서 영상 비교 연구

        Objectives : Diffuse tensor imaging (DTI) was applied to explore the difference in regional distribution and extent of white matter (WM) abnormalities in boys with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) versus boys with comorbid ADHD and tic disorders. Methods : Fifteen boys with ADHD (mean age 9.3 +1.8), 24 ADHD boys with chronic tic disorder or Tourette's disorder(9.9 =b 1.2) and 9 age-, gender-matched controls (9.2 d= 1.8) received DTI assessments. Fractional Anisotropy (FA) maps of WM were compared between groups with a voxel-wise analysis after intersubject registration to MNI space. Results : Bo groups, ADHD group and ADHD with tic disorder group, commonly showed decreased FA than healthy control group in left cerebellar middle peduncle and right frontal lobe, increased FA in right middle occipital WM. In the common areas of left cerebellar middle peduncle and right middle occipital WM, comorbid group showed broader areas of significant FA. The comorbid group also showed increased FA in right cerebellar peduncle, additionally. Conclusion : The findings in ADHD group support previous ADHD hypothesis of the functional abnormalities in corticocerebellar circuit, and suggest that ADHD might have more complicated pathology of neuronal circuit including occipital visual system. The comorbid group showed common areas of overlapping but more extensive abnormalities and also had additional WM abnormalities. ADHD with chronic tic disorders may represent a severe form of ADHD with additional regions of abnormal connectivity.

        Dysfunction of the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex is Primarily Responsible for Impaired Attentional Processing in Schizophrenia

        Objective: The results for finding the deficit in the anterior cingulate (ACC) in schizophrenic patients (SZ) have been inconsistent according to the studies that used different Stroop tasks, which is unlike the deficit in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In order to explore for the core region that’s responsible for the selective attention deficit in SZ, we examined the results of a functional neuroimaging study, which involved the performance of the Stroop task using high or low prefrontal cortex related loads in SZ. Methods: Ten schizophrenic patients and healthy controls (HC) received functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a Short/Long-term latency Stroop task. The changes in the neural activity were determined in well-known Stroop related regions of interest (ROIs) that consisted of the DLPFC, ACC, the parietal lobule and in the whole brain regions for both the main and interaction effects of latency, and the results of the short-term and long-term latency Stroop conditions were compared. Results: The response times for both the congruency and latency effects were more prolonged in the schizophrenics than in the HC. For the congruency effect, the schizophrenics showed significantly less activation in the same site of the left DLPFC in both the short-term and long-term latency conditions, as compared with the HC. For the latency effect, the regions of the left-side language network were over- or under-activated in the chizophrenics, as compared with the HC. Any interaction effect was not found for both the behavioral and fMRI results. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the deficit in the left DLPFC is the core impairment of attentional processing in schizophrenics, regardless of other possible interactions such as the latency effect.
