The purpose of this study is to compare the degradation characteristics by subcritical water of RDX contaminated soil using batch mode and dynamic mode devices. First, upon application of RDX contaminated soil, RDX treatment efficiency was increased with increasing the temperature in both modes. At 150℃, the treatment efficiency was 99.9%. RDX degradation efficiency got higher with lower ratio of solid to liquid. However, the treatment efficiency in the dynamic mode tended to be decreased at a certain ratio of solid to liquid or lower. The treatment efficiency was increased when it took longer time for the reactions in both modes. As the results of analysis on concentration of treated water after subcritical water degradation, the RDX recovery rate of dynamic and batch modes at 150℃ was 10.5% and 1.5%, respectively. However, both modes showed very similar recovery rates at 175℃ or higher. RDX degradation products were analyzed in treated water after it was treated with subcritical water. According to the results, RDX degradation mechanism was mostly oxidation reaction and reduction reaction was partially involved. Therefore, it suggested that most of RDX in soil was degraded by oxidation of subcritical water upon extraction. According to this result, it was found that both batch and dynamic modes were very effectively applied in the treatment of explosive contaminated soil.

Vol.0 No.8

John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress is a prominent work of religious English literature and occupies a significant place in the history of literature. Presented in the form of allegory, The Pilgrim’s Progress has gained a wide readership across the world mainly for its simple yet vivid explanation of the Bible. In Korea, The Pilgrim’s Progress was translated into Korean by a missionary named J. S. Gale and his wife with the help of early Korean Christians, and is thought to have played an important role in the development of early modern Korean novels. the popularity and success of The Pilgrim’s Progress, both literary and social, can be attributed to the beauty and simplicity of Bunyan’s prose and the vividness with which he brought his characters to life. The genre of allegory inspired for years generations of readers in their own struggles against adversity and repressive authority. While less used today, it was very popular in Bunyan’s time. Bunyan explained that he chose to use the allegory because the Bible also made use of metaphors and parables for religious ends. Due to its metaphorical nature, the allegory entails the issue of its interpretation, and Bunyan’s work is no exception. This paper aims to review academic discourse on the interpretation of Bunyan’s allegorical text and throw light on the significance and role of the allegory in his work.

Vol.- No.79

This paper aims to examine the challenge to the Petrarchan tradition and authority by de-idealizing woman in Donne’s Elegies. The Elegies contain some of Donne’s most outspoken and unconventional love poems. Donne’s Elegies vary in their attitudes toward women and sexual love. Some elegies present women as objects of revulsion and nausea. They defy conventional authority of parents, fathers, husbands by showing illicit or socially disapproved relationships. Donne imitates Ovidian love elegy, so his elegies are realistic and focus on sex and the female body. Donne’s elegies represent women not as idealized creatures, but as low and impure creatures. There is a persistent misogyny in many of his elegies. Donne satirizes Petrarchan idealization of women, and rejects classical representations of the female body. Through a debasement of women, Donne parodies and subverts Petrarchan conventions of praising female beauty in the “Elegy 2: The Anagram” and “Elegy 8: The Comparison.” Both are based on the contrast between female ugliness and beauty, and filled with plenty of unpleasant detail. The woman in the poems is frequently ugly and deformed. These elegies has the political dimension involving power transactions between men and women. In his treatment of love, we can find the public world and the private world are so intimate and often inseparable, and his elegies possess a politically subversive potential. With his anti-Petrarchanism, we can also read Donne’s dissatisfaction with the rule of a female monarchy in these elegies.

Vol.21 No.-

Since her first collection of poetry, A Change of World (1951), appeared, Adrienne Rich has been a major and influential figure in the literary world. As a poet, feminist thinker, and political activist, she has been not only providing some of the best-written poetry of recent times, but also has written some of the most scholarly books of feminist criticism, such as Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976) and On Lies, Secrets and Silence (1979). Her essays provide an important context for her poems. Rich’s style and subject matter have undergone significant changes. From the 1970s, Rich began to identify herself as a radical feminist and develop a distinctively woman’s voice. Rich also became aware of the need for a poetic language to explore and rename the unique experiences of women hitherto silenced or unrepresented in literature. So she attempted to shape a language capable of articulating the maternal and feminine experience. Feminist scholars responded in various ways to Rich’s controversial essay “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence” (1980), but it has become a cornerstone of feminist and lesbian theorizing. She not only offered a critical analysis of heterosexuality, but reconceptualized lesbian love as natural and normal. Now a politically active lesbian, Rich has accordingly narrowed her poetic perspective to accommodate that position. Rich is both controversial and celebrated for her activism, and developed into not only one of the most widely read but also the most widely resisted woman poets of the century.

Vol.57 No.-

In a turbulent political environment of mid-17th century England, Milton published three polemical and challenging political prose, namely; The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, Observations Upon the Articles of Peace with the Irish Rebels, and Eikonoklastes during 1649. Through these regicide prose, the readers can find nascent republican theory, and observe Milton’s efforts to protect the English Republicanism against the criticism regarding the regicide-execution of King Charles- and to demolish and demystify a popular and religious image of King Charles as a martyr projected in Eikonoklastes. Milton’s Eikonoklastes aimed to dismantle the popular religious image formed through the adroit words in Eikon Basilike. In Milton’s 1649 prose one can trace the process how the intuitions and nascent principles of the republicanism develop into a coherent anti-monarchic political theory. His political prose displays the contemporary political and ideological turbulence, as well the ideas and excitements toward the republicanism in England.

Vol.25 No.-

The Harlem Renaissance portrays the age of the New Negro, inspired by a new sense of self and race. Emerged from slavery, the New Negro is the new social subjectivities of the emergent educated elites. The newness of the New Negro stemmed largely from an aggressive claim to political inclusion, economic and cultural participation, and fundamental equality. The purpose of this paper is to examine identity and race issues of New Negroes in the Harlem Renaissance. The New Negro made the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s the culmination of political, social and cultural debates about the status of blacks in the U.S. The question of the individual in relation to race was one of the main points of debate among African-American artists. They have been caught between their private selves and their public roles. And they were torn between black and white identities. DuBois said the black person in America is burdened with "a double-consciousness ... two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings, two warring ideals in one dark body." The black man was victim of this dilemma that he is both an American and something apart. Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes were the leading poets of the Harlem Renaissance. However, their ideas of race and of New Negroes' roles and identities were very different. Countee Cullen said that he wanted simply to be a poet, not a Negro poet. In contrast, Langston Hughes links race and class issues. For him, Negro is a powerful and self-conscious cultural space of socially emergent group identity. Most of his poems are racial in theme, and he drew forms and techniques from blues and jazz.
