Death, Noise, and (Un)plotting in Don DeLillo’s White Noise

Critics have approached the pervasive images of Death in Don DeLillo’s White Noise primarily from an existential point of view, emphasizing its links to the alienation and dehumanizing aspects of postmodern life in today’s United Sates. This paper attempts to provide an alternative reading of White Noise by configuring the theme of death within the larger frame of science discourses. This paper observes that the disruption of the story line functions like noise from outside of the system. This new way of reading White Noise offers another possibility of understanding otherwise seemingly discrete and separate episodes and events from the story into a more coherent whole. What has become evident from this reading is that DeLillo attempts to deconstruct the binary oppositions of death and life as well as of noise and meaning in his own original way, not simply in a puny mimicry of Derridian deconstruction.
턱관절자세음양교정술(Functional Cerebro-Spinal Therapy, FCST)을 이용한 어지럼증 치료 1예

A dizziness case with functional cerebro-spinal therapy (FCST) was reviewed to explore the effect of FCST. The case was managed with Yinyang Balancing Appliance (YBA) and the TMJ Balancing Appliance (TBA), combined with acupuncture, cupping and herbal medicine. Clinical outcome measurement was performed based on subjective measures and clinical observation. The patient showed positive changes starting after the first treatment. Futher clinical and biological research on FCST is expected.

Hydroxypropyl cyclosophoraose-pullulan (HPCys-Pul) microspheres were designed as a novel hybridsystem of biocompatible pullulan matrice and pendant hydroxypropyl cyclosophoraoses with drugcomplexing ability. The HPCys-Pul microspheres were prepared by emulsion crosslinking method, andcharacterized using thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanningelectron microscopy, and solid state NMR spectroscopy. By virtue of hydroxypropyl cyclosophoraoses, thedeveloped microspheres can encapsulate 4.2-fold more naproxen than pullulan microspheres. Korsmeyer–Peppas model was introduced for describing release kinetics. In vivo naproxen releaseanalysis was carried out in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. From those results HPCys-Pul microsphere will be apromising platform for controlled drug delivery.

Statement of problem: The researches on the influence of design variables on the stress distribution in cortical and trabecular bones and on optimal design for implant system were limited. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the sensitivities of design parameters and to suggest the optimal parameters for designing the onebody type implant system. Material and methods: Stresses arising in the implant system were obtained by finite element analysis using a three dimensional model. An onebody type implant system[Oneplant (Warrantec. Co. Ltd., Korea)] was considered in this study. Vortical load(150 N) was applied on the top of the abutment along the axial direction. The initial design variables set for sensitivity analysis were radius of fixture, numbers of micro thread, numbers of power thread, height of micro thread, future length, tapered angle of future, inclined angle of thread, width of micro thread and width of power thread. The statistical technique of Design of Experiments(DOE) was applied tn the simulation model to deduce effective design parameters on stress distributions in bones. The deduced design parameters were incorporated into a fully automated design tool which is coupled with the finite element analysis and numerical optimization to determine the optimal design parameters. Results: 1. The result of sensitivity analysis showed six design variables - radius of future, tapered angle of fixture, inclined angle of thread, numbers of power thread, numbers of micro thread and height of micro thread - were more influential than the others. 2. The optimal values of design variables can be deduced by coupling finite element analysis (FEA) and design optimization tool(DOT).

An efficient new material for removal of mercury from water was prepared by the chemicallyfunctionalization of silica gel. Various monolayers were grafted on the silica gel surface to attachterminal alkynyl groups. All modified surfaces were characterized by XPS, ATR-IR and elemental analysiswhile Hg2+ concentrations were determined by ICP-OES. The Hg2+ adsorption reached equilibriumwithin 2 h with maximum adsorption capacities of 174.3 mg g 1 for alkynyl monolayers functionalizedsilica gel. Due to relatively lower price of silica gel, it can be efficiently used after functionalization onlarge scale to remove Hg2+ ions from the wastewater.
유기성 폐자원의 병합 비율에 따른 유기물 특성 및 메탄 잠재량 평가

유기성 폐자원(음식물류 폐수, 가축분뇨, 하수슬러지 등)의 해양투기 금지 및 폐자원 바이오매스 에너지화 정책에 따라 유기성 폐자원 에너지화는 중요한 국가적 과제로 부각되고 있다. 유기성 폐자원 처리의 경우 단독 처리시설은 38개소, 병합처리시설은 17개소가 운영 중에 있으나 개소당 처리량은 병합처리시설이 더 많은 것으로 나타났다(단독처리시설: 198천톤/년; 병합처리시설: 345천톤/년). 가축분뇨의 경우 타 유기성 폐기물에 비해 C/N 비가 높고 유기물 함량(Volatile Solids, VS 기준)이 낮아 에너지 전환 효율이 낮은 것으로 보고되고 있다. 이에 반해 음식물류 폐수의 경우 유기물 함량이 높고 C/N 비가 낮다. 따라서 가축분뇨와 음식물류 폐수 병합처리 시 가축분뇨의 원료적 단점을 보완할 수 있다. 병합처리시설 중 음식물류 폐수와 가축분뇨 병합처리 시설은 총 5개소가 운영 중에 있으며 혼합 비율은 1:0.5 ~ 182.5 (음식물류 폐수 기준)로 넓은 범위로 나타났다. 또한 소화효율(VS 기준)은 15.1 ~ 95.1%로 넓은 분포를 나타내었다. 이렇듯 음식물류 폐수와 가축 분뇨의 적정 혼합 비율에 관한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 음식물류 폐수와 가축분뇨의 병합 비율에 따른 유기물 특성(Excitation-Emission Matrix (EEM), SUVA254, SUVA280 등)과 메탄 잠재량을 평가하였다. SUVA254와 SUVA280분석 결과에 따르면 가축분뇨는 음식물류 폐수에 비해 각각 6.8 및 8.1배 높은 것으로 나타났다. 회분식 메탄 잠재량 평가 결과, 가축분뇨의 비율이 낮아질수록 최대 메탄 발생량은 증가되는 경향으로 나타났다. 그러나 혼합 비율 대비 시너지효과를 평가한 결과, 1:1.5 (음식물류 폐수 기준) 비율에서 14.9%로 가장 높게 나타났다.

Despite the fact that Milton’s Paradise Lost was published in the Restoration, the epic has been often considered as a literary work representing English civil war literature. The conventional reading of Milton’s epic as a legacy of English civil war and its religious and political conflicts tends to overlook the dialogic and oppositional voice in the poem that Milton, both covertly and openly, used to challenge the moral and social status of King Charles II and his court in the early Restoration. Inspired with the revisionist views supported by the literary historians, such as N. H. Keeble and Jonathan Scott, this paper suggests an alternative way of reading Paradise Lost as a literary piece perfectly in tune with the Restoration as an age riddled with diverse conflicts and tensions. In the first half, the paper surveys the popular understanding of the Restoration Milton to reveal how it serves to support and, in turn, is supported by the conventional historiography of the Restoration. The latter half of the paper revisits a couple of places in Paradise Lost in order to illustrate how Milton positions himself in opposition to King Charles II and his court followers, especially through the critical engagement of gluttony and drunkenness.
광집게 실험에서 매질의 굴절률 차이에 의한 구면수차 효과 및 제어

The working range of optical tweezers deep inside a suspension medium is severely limited by the refractive-index-mismatch spherical aberration (RIMSA) due to the presence of media with different indices of refraction, $e.g.$, an immersion medium, a coverslip, and a suspension medium. In this case study, the feasibility of versatile optical tweezers with a moderate NA objective is investigated with a wavefront correction method. The effect of RIMSA on a tightly-focused beam through planar interfaces is described with the angular spectrum representation based on the rigorous vectorial diffraction theory, and the associated effects on optical tweezers are presented by evaluating the light-matter interaction in the Rayleigh region. Finally, I show that a stable optical trap for 70-nm silica spheres 100 $\mu$m deep inside a suspension medium can be realized with a 780-nm laser beam of a few tens of mW by using a moderate NA objective lens having a centimeter-long working distance. 본 연구에서는 빛을 강하게 집속하는 경로에 존재하는 매질들의 굴절률 차이에의해 발생하는 구면수차에 의한 집속광선 분포의 변화를 빛의 편광 및 매질의 경계면에서의 반사등을 포함하는 벡터 회절 이론을 사용하여 기술하였다. 또한 이러한 수차 효과를 광포획 장치를 구현하는 일반적인 상황에 적용하여 광포획에 미치는 영향을 평가하고 구면수차에의한 파면의 변화를 복원하는 방안을 제시하였다. 이를 통해 NA = 0.61의 렌즈를 사용해서도 수십 나노미터 크기의 유전입자를 100 $\mu$m의 깊이에서 안정적으로 포획할 수 있는 광포획 우물을 형성시킬 수 있음을 보였다.
