본 연구는 사립유치원 원장들이 유치원을 운영하면서, 아픔으로 느끼는 다양한 고충과, 다시 일어서게 하는 보람된 요소들, 지금이 있게 하는 내재된 열정과 미래에 대한 희망 등을 문화 기술적 연구방법을 통해 밝히고자 하였다. 2007년 5월부터~7월까지 총 13주 동안, 10명의 사립유치원장을 연구 참여자로 하여 심층면담과 관련 문서, 연구자의 반성적 저널쓰기를 통해 자료를 수집 하였다. 수집한 자료를 분석한 결과 사립유치원 원장들은 고충의 요소로 수요자 중심의 재정형태로 인한 원아모집의 경쟁과 안전사고에 대한 두려움, 학부모와 교직원 관리, 교육과정 운영과 유치원 운영상의 재정적 어려움, 유치원 평가에 대한 두려움을 갖고 있었고, 보람의 요소로는 교육적 효과로 인한 아이들의 변화와 학부모, 교사로부터의 감사, 내 교육철학의 실현과 현재 자신의 위치와 모습에서 보람을 찾고 있었다. 또한 이제까지 열정을 다해 유치원을 일구었던 시간들을 기억하며, 앞으로 사립유치원이 정부로부터의 재정적 지원을 받음으로써 질적으로 더욱 성숙하여지고, 사회적으로도 교육기관으로서 인정받게 되기를 희망하였다. This study aims to understand the way how ptivate-kindergarten principals perceive their work, give the meaning of their work, and administer their kindergarten through ethnographic research method. 10 private-kindergarten principals in A city were chosen considering researcher's situation. This research was carried out for 13 weeks. In-depth interview, telephone interview, and internet interview were performed and for in-depth interview both 'unstructured' and 'semi-structed' interview methods were used. First, 6 kinds of difficulties were found which the private-kindergarten principals face in the operation of kindergarten. The most difficulty is to compete with other kindergartens for recruiting children due to user-centered financial structure. Second, there are various joys that the private-kindergarten principals have. Above all, the biggest joy is from children. They reported that feel happiness the most when the educational changes in children are observed. The joy comes when parents respect the princilals as educators and express thankfulness. The principals felt joy when teachers work well in the good working condition with self-development opportunities given by them. Finally, the private-kindergarten principals expected that with the governmental financial support, they can run their own specialized curriculum as private institutions as well as keep their curriculum from excessive parental demands on special programs outside kindergarten.
