          Confessions and Dialogues of Colonial Intellectuals from Feminist Perspectives: Im Sun-deuk’s Short Stories during the Late Period of Japanese Colonial Rule

          This paper examines Im Sun-deuk’s two short stories, “Iryoil” (Sunday, 1937) and “Nazuke oya” (A Godmother, 1942). Im, an active participant in Korea’s socialist movement in the 1930s, turned to literature as her career at a time when Japanese colonial authorities had tightened their control over Korea to further the Japanese empire’s colonial expansion into China. In the process, the Japanese implemented an assimilation policy to mobilize the Korean people into the Japanese war effort. By employing the concept of confession in “Iryoil” and “Nazuke oya,” Im projects an autobiographical self onto her protagonists, both of whom are modern women striving to preserve their identities as socially conscious intellectuals committed to nationalism, socialism, and feminism. By positioning her protagonists as confessors to other characters in the texts, Im’s short stories portray intellectuals in colonial Korea as in conflict or harmony with her protagonists. Im’s protagonists embody female subjects who find a new kind of womanhood under Japanese colonial rule. However, in “Nazuke oya,” Im’s protagonist displays a more flexible and open attitude toward Koreans with attitudes and beliefs different from her own. In this sense, the act of confession as presented in Im’s texts is an attempt to build a bond and sense of community among the Korean people from a woman’s perspective, and at a time when Korean identity risked becoming obsolete.

          Blockade of P-Glycoprotein Decreased the Disposition of Phenformin and Increased Plasma Lactate Level

          This study aimed to investigate the in vivo relevance of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the pharmacokinetics and adverse effect of phenformin. To investigate the involvement of P-gp in the transport of phenformin, a bi-directional transport of phenformin was carried out in LLC-PK1 cells overexpressing P-gp, LLC-PK1-Pgp. Basal to apical transport of phenformin was 3.9-fold greater than apical to basal transport and became saturated with increasing phenformin concentration (2-75 mM) in LLC-PK1-Pgp, suggesting the involvement of P-gp in phenformin transport. Intrinsic clearance mediated by P-gp was 1.9 mL/min while passive diffusion clearance was 0.31 mL/min. Thus, P-gp contributed more to phenformin transport than passive diffusion. To investigate the contribution of P-gp on the pharmacokinetics and adverse effect of phenformin, the effects of verapamil, a P-gp inhibitor, on the pharmacokinetics of phenformin were also examined in rats. The plasma concentrations of phenformin were increased following oral administration of phenformin and intravenous verapamil infusion compared with those administerd phenformin alone. Pharmacokinetic parameters such as Cmax and AUC of phenformin increased and CL/F and Vss/F decreased as a consequence of verapamil treatment. These results suggested that P-gp blockade by verapamil may decrease the phenformin disposition and increase plasma phenformin concentrations. P-gp inhibition by verapamil treatment also increased plasma lactate concentration, which is a crucial adverse event of phenformin. In conclusion, P-gp may play an important role in phenformin transport process and, therefore, contribute to the modulation of pharmacokinetics of phenformin and onset of plasma lactate level.

          Variability of Gemcitabine Accumulation and Its Relationship to Expression of Nucleoside Transporters in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

          The concentrative nucleoside transporter CNT1 and equilibrated nucleoside transporter ENT1 mediate the cellular uptake of naturally occurring pyrimidine and purine nucleosides and many structurally diverse anticancer and antiviral nucleoside analogs, thereby regulating drug responses or toxicity at the target site. The objectives of this study were to analyze interindividual variations in the cellular accumulation of gemcitabine and to examine the correlation between the uptake of gemcitabine and expression levels of CNT1 and ENT1 transporters. Gemcitabine was a substrate for both CNT1 and ENT1 with higher affinity to CNT1 than to ENT1. The difference in gemcitabine uptake was 4.8-fold in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 10 subjects. Among these, the CNT1- and ENT1-mediated uptake of gemcitabine was 14.3- and 16.5-folds, respectively. CNT1-mediated gemcitabine uptake showed a higher correlation with the CNT1 expression level than did ENT1-mediated uptake with ENT1 expression level. In conclusion, CNT1 seemed to be a major contributing factor to gemcitabine uptake in PBMCs and showed 14.3-fold inter-individual variations. However, ENT1-mediated uptake of gemcitabine might compensate for the total uptake of gemcitabine; therefore,the variation in the apparent accumulation of gemcitabine was smaller than that of the individual transporters.

          Platinum Transporters and Drug Resistance

          Cisplatin, a platinum coordinated complex, is a widely used antineoplastic agent for the treatment of metastatic tumors of the testis, metastatic ovarian tumors, lung cancer, advanced bladder cancer and many other solid tumors. The cytotoxic action of the drug is often thought to be associated with its ability to bind DNA to form cisplatin-DNA adducts. The development of resistance to cisplatin during treatment is common and constitutes a major obstacle to the cure of sensitive tumors. Although to understand the clinically relevant mechanisms of resistance, many studies have been aimed at clarifying the biochemical/molecular alterations of cisplatin-resistance cells, these studies did not conclusively identify the basis of cellular resistance to cisplatin. In this review, cisplatin resistance was discussed in terms of the relevant transporters, such as copper transporters (CTRs), organic cation transporters (OCTs) and multi-drug resistance related transporters (MDRs). These transporters seem to be contributed to cisplatin resistance through the reduction of drug accumulation in the cell. Better understanding the mechanism of cisplatin resistance associated with transporters will provide the useful informations for overcoming the cisplatin resistance.

          Contribution of CNT1 and ENT1 to ribavirin uptake in human hepatocytes

          The objective of this study was to investigate thecontributions of a sodium-dependent concentrative nucleosidetransporter (CNT) 1 and an equilibrative nucleosidetransporter (ENT) 1 to ribavirin uptake in human hepatocytes. The initial studies in oocytes expressing CNT1 andENT1 showed increases in ribavirin uptake, indicating thatribavirin was a substrate for both CNT1 and ENT1. TheCNT1- and ENT1-mediated ribavirin uptake showed concentrationdependency with the following kinetics parameters:Km 26.3 lM and Vmax 426.2 fmol/min/oocyte forCNT1; Km 70.5 lM and Vmax 134.3 fmol/min/oocyte forENT1. Ribavirin uptake clearance in six human hepatocytesranged from 21.3 to 300.7 lL/min. Estimation of the contributionsof CNT1 and ENT1 to the hepatic uptake ofribavirin by using a relative activity factor method indicatedthat the relative contribution of ENT1 to the ribavirin uptakewas 82.8 ± 3.9 %. Real-time polymerase chain reactionanalysis of CNT1 and ENT1 expressions in the hepatocytesshowed that ENT1 mRNA expression was closely correlatedwith ribavirin uptake (R = 0.95, P = 0.003) while CNT1was not. The findings indicated that ENT1 was the majortransporter controlling the hepatic uptake of ribavirin.

          냉각제들에 따른 불연속 발열체의 냉각성능 연구

          The present study investigated the effects of the experimental parameters on the cooling characteristics of the multichip module cooled by the indirect liquid cooling method using water, PF-5060, and paraffin slurry. The experimental parameters were coolants including Paraffin slurry with mass fraction of 2.5~7.5%, heat flux of 10~40W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the simulated VLSI chips and Reynolds numbers of 3,000~20,000. The size of paraffin slurry was constant as 10~40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ before and after the experiment. The chip surface temperatures for paraffin slurry were lower than those for water and PF-5060. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry were larger than those for water and the local heat transfer coefficients reached a row-number-independent and thermally-fully-developed value approximately after the third row. The local Nusselt numbers for paraffin slurry with a mass fraction of 7.5% were larger by 20~38% than those for water. The paraffin slurry with a mass fraction of 5% shelved the best thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics when local heat transfer and pressure drop were considered simultaneously.


          점탄성 유체의 정압 열팽창계수, 밀도 및 전단속도 0에서의 점동에 대한 실험연구

          점탄성유체의 물성치들 중 정압열팽창계수 및 밀도는 자연대류 열전달 연구에 전단 속도 0에서의 점도는 점탄성유체에 대한 모델들 사용 시 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 점탄성유 체이며 마찰 감소 첨가제, 유전자 분리용액동으로 사용하는 Separan AP-273 용액의 정압열 팽창계수, 밀도 및 전단속도 0에서의 점도에대한 농도 및 온도의 영향을 조사하였다. 작동유 체의 물성치들은 10~6$0^{\circ}C$의 온도범위와 100~20,000wppm의 농도범위에서 측정되었다. 작 동유체의 물성치들에 미치는 열주기와 노화의 영향을 조사하기 위해서 정압열팽창계수와 전 단속도 0에서의 점도를 교대로 두 번씩 측정했다. 정압열팽창계수 및 밀도를 측정하는 장치 의 측정 정밀도는 증류수에 대한 측정치와 문헌에 나타난 자료를 비교하여 얻었고 이는 $\pm$ 2%이내였다. Separan AP-273용액의 정압열팽창계수 및 밀도는 증류수의 값들로 대치될수 있다. 작동유체의 정압열팽창계수와 밀도는 열주기와 노화의 영향을 받지 않았다. 낙하식 점 도계를 사용해 측정한 겉보기점도 값들을 나타내느 flow curve에서 전단속도가 0이 되는방 향으로 겉보기점도를 외삽시켜 Separan AP-273용액에 대한 전단속도0에서의 점도를 얻었 다. 정압열팽창계수 측정 전후에 측정한 작동유체에 대한 전단속도 0에서의 점도는 열주기 와 노화로 인해 퇴화되었다.
