Two acid dyes having excellent antimicrobial activity were synthesized by using silver sulfadiazine, a well-known antibiotic, and 8-amino-1-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid (H-acid). The diazonium salt of silver sulfadiazine (S1) and the acetylated H-acid (H1) were prepared first, and then an antimicrobial red acid dye (Acid-Red) was synthesized via a coupling reaction of S1 and H1. An antimicrobial blue acid dye (Acid-Blue) was also synthesized by the successive coupling reactions of H-acid with the diazonium salt of aniline-2,5-disulfonic acid (B1) and the diazonium salt of sliver sulfadiazine (S1). Two colorless antimicrobial additives for disperse dyeing, Disperse-ES and Disperse-AS, were also synthesized by reacting silver sulfadiazine with diethyl sulfate and acetic anhydride, respectively. The synthesized antimicrobial dyes and additives were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-vis, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. Although the nylon fabric dyed with either Acid-Red or Acid-Blue showed poor light fastness, it had good washing and crocking fastness. The nylon fabrics dyed with Acid-Red and Acid-Blue and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics treated with Disperse-ES or Disperse-AS showed excellent antimicrobial activities after 10 repeated launderings.

Novel reactive dyes having antibacterial properties were synthesized by introducing sulfase, -$NHSO_2$-, which is well known as antibiotics to reactive dyes. An intermediate compound was prepared by a coupling reaction of the diazonium salt of sulfadiazine with the condensation product of 8-amino-1-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid (H-acid) and cyanuric chloride. A reaction of the intermediate compound and sodium 4-aminophenyl-${\beta}$-sulfatoethyl sulphonate (p-Base) afforded a new reactive red dye of monochlorotriazine type. To synthesize reactive blue dyes of vinyl sulfone type, another intermediate compound was prepared by a coupling reaction of the diazonium salt of p-Base with H-acid, followed by the second coupling reaction of the diazonium salt of sulfadiazine or silver sulfadiazine with the intermediate compound. The synthesized dyes were characterized using a high performance liquid chromatography and various spectroscopic analyses such as UV/Vis, FT-IR, energy dispersive X-Ray, and inductively coupled plasma.

Dyeing properties of three sulfadiazine type reactive dyes (Re-Red, Re-Blue1, and Re-Blue2) synthesized newly from (silver) sulfadiazine, H-acid, and p-base were evaluated by dyeing cotton fabric with them. The synthesized reactive dyes showed somewhat lower build-up property and lower exhaustion ratio compared to those of a commercial dye. The fastness to light, washing, and crocking of the dyed cotton fabrics showed fairly good grade. However, the antimicrobial activities of the dyed fabrics tested using Staphylococcus aureus (AT.C.C. 6538) as a cultivating bacterium were excellent. The dyed fabrics also showed very good durability of the antibacterial activities to repeated launderings. Re-Blue1 synthesized from sulfadiazine is more effective than Re-Blue2 synthesized from silver sulfadiazine considering the manufacturing cost and antibacterial activity of the dyed fabric.

An interaction between lymphocytes and tumor cells is essential in the defense against the growth of neoplastic cells in humans and animals. The contact between the lymphocyte and the neoplastic target cell is probably mediated by a sensitization of the lymphocyte to tumor specific antigens. The contact between the lymphocyte and the antigen is thought to be followed by a distortion of a recognition site of the lymphocyte membrane, initiating an intracellular chain reaction beginning with a rise in the activity of a membrane-bound adenosine triphosphatase (ATPaes). On the other hand, many investigations were carried out on the BCG and/or Picibanil inoculation for the treatment of cancer in humans and animals through stimulation of the reticuloendothelial system, which would result in an enhancement of lymphocyte related immunity. This work was designed to study the effects of Sarcoma 180 cell inoculation and immunotherapy with BCG and Picibanil alone or in combination with one another on the ATPase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities of mitochondrial fraction of spleen lymphocytes from normal and Sarcoma 180-bearing mice. The enzyme activities of these phosphatases were definitely higher in the Sarcoma mice than that of normal mice one week after the tumor cell inoculation. However, two weeks later, corresponding to the advanced stage of tumor, these enzyme activities were decreased to lower than that of the control mice in ATPase and acid phosphatase activities but still higher than control mice in alkaline phosphatase activity. Elevated enzyme activities were observed in both of normal and Sarcoma 180-bearing mice treated with BCG and with Picibanil in one and even two weeks after inoculation. Effects of BCG or Picibanil on enzymatic activities were more significant in Sarcoma mice than in normal. Treatment with BCG-Picibanil combination, however, showed no increse in enzyme activities but remarkable decrease than with BCG or Picibanil alone.

As the interest in leisure and health increases, the domestic outdoor wear industry becomes bigger. The waterproofness of fabrics does not ensure the waterproofness of garments because of the stitch holes during the sewing process even with the seam sealing tapes. Thus the water leakage often becomes a problem during the end use. Still companies use fabrics waterproofness data for garments marketing because they are simple to run the test, less expensive than the whole garment testing, and easy to achieve the quality control. In this study the rain tower system for evaluating the waterproofness of garments has been developed and the waterproofness of the selected waterproof and breathable garments in the market were tested. The rain tower was consisted of rain tower room, rainfall forming system and measurement system. Two different levels of rainfall can be simulated with this system(100l/m2/hr and 450l/m2/hr). Jackets in the market have been tested at two different rainfall conditions. The temperature and humidity data inside jackets didn`t provide much information on the waterproofness at severe rainfall condition(450l/m2/hr, 1 hour). However, water leakage was detected on the cotton undershirt inside jacket. 5 out of 8 jackets passed the normal rainfall condition(100l/m2/hr, 30 minutes). The newly developed rain tower system was able to evaluate the waterproofness of the jacket seams. It is recommended the further study on the detailed test conditions for the end use of the waterproof and breathable garments.
