        호주 원주민의 소멸과 호주의 아이히만들 그리고 남겨진 세대: 도리스 필킹턴 가리마라의 『토끼 울타리를 따라서』

        This paper reads Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by Australian aboriginal writer Doris Pilkington Garimara as a testimonial text. While rewriting colonial history from an aboriginal perspective, Pilkington Garimara’s documentary novel revolves around the homecoming escape of three half-caste girls, Molly, Gracie, Daisy from the governmental supervision to their home in the Outback. This heroic story of the aboriginal mixed-race girls called the stolen generation demonstrates female courage and resistance to white people's civilized violence and deceptive authority. Utilization of ideas and concepts from Jared Diamond and Hannah Arendt assists in understanding aboriginal traumatic experiences and degrading conditions by critiquing white Australian authority. Diamond illustrates the environment of aboriginal society and interrogates white Australians's interpretation of aboriginal lifestyles and behavior as being culturally backward. Likewise, Arendt observes the Holocaust trial of Adolf Eichmann and conceptualizes the 'banality of evil' within practices of degradation. Based on the theories of Diamond and Arendt, this paper defines the common humanitarian white Australians with self-declared eugenic superiority as 'Australian Eichmanns' committing unexceptional crimes against aborigines. A case in point is A. O. Neville who promoted biological absorption and defended the policies of forced settlement. Pilkington Garimara’s life writing on the stolen generations makes possible reconciliation discourse for genuine social integration between future generations and raises global awareness against physical and epistemological violences caused by racial hatred and cultural misunderstanding.

        문화대혁명의 발생과 중국 조선족의 대응- 『연변일보』게재 소설을 중심으로 -

        This article investigates how Korean Chinese responded during the Cultural Revolution in China, based on the novels published in Yanbian Daily(1965-1966), before and after the Cultural Revolution Period in China(here in after called ‘cultural Revolution’). In particular, the ‘Haerangang’, the literary column in Yanbian Daily is a key material that can cast a light on how Korean Chinese thought and expressed their opinions on literature Thought literature research, it was found that Korean Chinese faced the reality by fitting themselves to a new environment taking advantage of assimilating ethnic minorities into Han(which was carried out along with the Cultural Revolution), and also implemented measures to change the new environment after the Cultural Revolution. Besides, the reason why Korean Chinese were more active in instilling the consciousness of proletarian class and reinforcing ideological/produciton/class conflict can be understood as an assimilation strategy of selecting China as a new settlement place, while maintaining its cultural identity as Koreans. It is possible to consider that this carefully planned assimilation strategy is a tool for integration as a ethnic minority in China after the Cultural Revolution. 본고는 중국의 문화대혁명기(이하 ‘문혁’으로 약칭)의 발생을 전후하여 『연변일보』에 게재된(1965-1966) 소설을 대상으로 중국 조선족 문학이 문혁의 발생에 어떻게 대응했는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구를 통해서 중국 조선족이 문혁 발생과 함께 진행된 대한족화 정책이란 두 가지 상황의 특성을 매개하여 새로운 환경에 자신을 맞춰서 새로이 유발된 스트레스 환경을 변화시키는 방식으로 현실에 대응하였음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 문혁 발생과 더불어 모택동이 재차 강조한 무산계급 의식의 고취와 생산, 계급, 사상 투쟁은 중국 조선족이 국경을 넘기 전 조선인으로서의 문화적 정체감을 유지한 채 새로운 정주지 중국에서 선택한 동화(Assimilation)의 전략으로 이해할 수 있었다. 더불어 이러한 동화의 전략은 문혁 발생 이후 중국에서 살아가는 소수민족으로서의 중국 조선족이 통합(Integration)의 전략을 견지하는 데에도 역할 한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

        “What is to be done?”: Body Dismemberment, Bonded Prostitution, and Impossible Social Justice in “Douloti the Bountiful” by Mahasweta Devi

        This paper explores Mahasweta Devi, one of the most distinguished Indian writers, and her tragic novella, “Douloti the Bountiful,” in terms of body dismemberment, bonded prostitution, and impossible social justice from a feminist perspective. Revolving around Douloti’s fate as a tribal girl becoming a bonded prostitute, the story set in post-independence India intricately dramatizes how the bonded labor system deteriorates tribal life and communities. More specifically, “Douloti the Bountiful” consists of seven units which narrate the generational sufferings of a bonded laborer Ganori Nagesia Crook Nagesia and his daughter Douloti whose bodies are savagely exploited and dismembered. The sympathetic portrayals of the tribal father and daughter as subjugated bonded slaves represent social injustice and ongoing struggles the tribals have faced. In a word, in “Douloti the Bountiful,” as a socially conscious writer, Devi not only raises public awareness to prevalent social oppression and racial violence inflicted on the subaltern tribals but also crystalizes her indomitable involvement as a social activist for freedom and equality of the underprivileged people systematically victimized and continuously entrapped in the bonded slavery in Nation-state India.

        호지킨 림프종의 병리학적 특징과 감별진단

        Recent advances in the understanding of the biology of Hodgkin lymphoma have led to a new classification. Hodgkin lymphoma is now recognized as a B-cell disorder of germinal center or post-germinal center origin. In the WHO classification, Hodgkin lymphoma consists of two categories, namely, nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma and classical Hodgkin lymphoma. Classical Hodgkin lymphoma encompasses not only nodular sclerosis, mixed cellularity, and lymphocyte depletion subtypes, but also lymphocyte-rich subtype, among which, nodular sclerosis stands out as a distinct entity. A borderline neoplasm with features intermediate between Hodgkin lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma has also been recognized. (Korean J Med 2011;81:543-553) 호지킨림프종의 진단은 과거 전형적인 현미경 소견만으로도 진단이 되었지만, 비호지킨림프종, 상피암종, 성세포암종 등 다양한 감별진단이 필요하므로 반드시 면역염색이 동반되어야 한다. 호지킨 림프종의 아형은 형태학적 면역학적인 차이뿐 아니라 임상적으로도 서로 다르므로 정확한 아형 분류가 중요하다.

        원주민 소녀, 백인 소년을 만나다: 해체적 상상력으로 로이드 존스의 『미스터 핍』 읽기

        This paper explores New Zealand writer Lloyd Jones‘s Mister Pip, winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Overall Prize for Best Book, in terms of a coming-of-age story and a subversive allegory. The novel weaves the developmental process which through 13-year-old Matilda Laimo went with rebellions and disillusionment on a copper-rich tropical island shattered by war in the early 1990s. In such the ravaged place, all whites have fled, and all native villagers including children are unified in their efforts for daily survival. Only one white staying behind with his native wife Grace is the eccentric Mr. Watts who is asked to fill in as the children's schoolteacher. He (re)reads to the children each day from Charles Dickens’s classic Great Expectations. The precocious Matilda and her peers, even though stuck in the ruined schoolhouse, are fascinated by the adventures of a young orphan named Pip which takes them to the 19th century London. Mr. Watts and the children deconstruct and reconstruct the western classic as their own story. On one hand, indeed, literary imagination empowers the children to escape their own blighted landscape and subversively transform their lives against an ominous backdrop of war. On the other hand, the novel illustrates that amid the chaos and extreme violence, imagination can be dangerous. Matilda witnesses and graphically remembers her mother and teacher being brutally murdered. While on the island, Mr. Watts claims Pip's identity as his own, later on, in Australia, Matilda reclaims emigrant Pip's story as her own. After all, throughout the tense interactions between Matilda, her mother Dolores, and Mr. Watts, while criticizing a catastrophic and split world by colonial legacy and neocolonial economic hegemony, Jones's Mister Pip in the intertextual relation to Dickens's Great Expectations comes to celebrate the meaning of pure sacrifice for others and the resilience of the human spirit as well as the power of literary imagination.

        “‘I’ does not exist”: Developing Female Self with a Polynesian Family Community in Where We Once Belonged by Sia Figiel

        Samoa's first female writer Sia Figiel's first novel, Where We Once Belonged (1997), is a coming of age story about Alofa, a 13-year-old girl growing up in the village of Malaefou. Also, the novel elaborately narrates the various stories about Samoan people and, more precisely, about Samoan women in the family-based and male-dominated culture. Fictionalizing the historical and cultural reality in which Samoan women are forced to endure racial and gendered experiences, Figiel subtly problematizes the predefined concepts of female self and sexuality in a community-oriented society, while dealing with issues of gender and sexuality, history and culture, children and parents, self and others. Considering these points, this paper explores Where We Once Belonged in terms of Samoan women's voice and feminist consciousness in which the daughter-narrator who goes through childhood and adolescence comes to terms with her own search for personal and communal identity. As she tells the painful and humorous stories about Samoans with realistic touches and comical imagery, not only does Figiel attempt to overturn the romanticized Western view of the Pacific Islands as paradise and Western interpretations of Samoan life, but she also resists merely romanticizing the traditional Samoan culture.

        Learning and Unlearning in Terms of Homing and Becoming In Linda Hogan’s Power and Solar Storms

        린다 호건의 ꡔ힘ꡕ과 ꡔ태양폭풍ꡕ에 나타난 귀향과 성장의 관점에서의 학습과 탈학습 차 희 정 (광주대학교) 본 논문에서는 아메리칸 인디언 여성작가 린다 호건의 소설 ꡔ힘ꡕ과 ꡔ태양폭풍ꡕ에 나타난 딸-화자들의 귀향과 성장과정에 중요한 영향을 끼치는 학습과 탈학습의 과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 이 소설들은 아메리칸 인디언으로서의 정체성, 자아발전, 자아실현을 위해서는, 딸-화자들이 백인중심의 현대교육제도에서 학습된 사고, 가치관에서 탈피하여야하며, 왜곡된 인디언 역사, 경시된 환경 친화적인 문화, 전통가치관의 학습의 필요성을 보여주고 있다. 더 나아가서, 에코 페미니즘적 시각에서, 남녀관계뿐만 아니라, 인간(문화)과 동물(자연)의 관계에서도 당연시 여겨지는 배타적, 위계적 관계에 의문을 제시하면서, 그러한 불평등 관계의 밑바탕이 되는 문화적, 인종적, 성적, 생태학적 경계선을 허물고자하는 노력을 보여준다. 또한, 지구의 심각한 피폐화와 인간의 삶, 특히 아메리카 인디언들의 자연친화적 삶의 위기를 가져온 인간중심의 서구문명화와 개발을 비판하고 있다. 결론적으로, 역사적 사건, 신화, 전래설화를 바탕으로 한 딸-화자들의 귀향과 성장소설을 통하여, 호건은 아메리칸 인디언들의 삶과 묻혀버린 역사를 재조명하고, 환경정의(environmental justice)의 당위성과 실현을 위하여 건전한 관계 정립의 필요성을 피력하고 있다.
