This article explores the changes that take place in Donghak (East Learning) in the idea of Deity in relation to its idea of Society. For this purpose, the writer examines Choi Je Woo’s idea of Deity in relation to his idea of society. Choi Je Woo is the founding leader of Donghak His idea of God is different from that of Neo-Confucianism in the sense that it emphasizes the transcendence and personality of Deity. However, the writer argues that Donhak’s idea of Deity has changed after it becomes an institutionalized religion by Choi Si Hyung, the successor of Choi Je Woo. Choi Je Woo’s idea of Deity, which is transcendental, personal thus close to that of Christianity, changes into an immanent, impersonal Deity that is close to that of Neo-Confucianism. This trend of changes is reinforced by the followers of Donghak who are influenced by the ruling Neo-Confucian elites. The writer shows that this changes of Deity results in the change of Donghak’s dynamics of the transformation of society. When Donghak emphasizes the idea of transcendental, personal Deity, it has the energy of social transformation, while it changes its idea of God as immanent, impersonal, it suddenly loses the energy of social transformation.
