        1. Water samples were collected eleven times, simultaneously at seventeen sites set up from upstream to downstream of the North Han River and the Han River since August of 1978 till August of 1979, and also at their thirteen tributaries in November of 1979. 2. Four heavy metals (copper, lead, zink and cadmium) in sample water were analyzed in great care of the contamination to sample. 3. The concentration of four heavy metals increased gradually from upstream to midstream and swiftly in downstream especially in Seoul City area. 4. The concentration at each site was fluctuated in relation to the flow rate of river water, e. g., just after heavy rain fall it increased much in up-and midstreams and when little rain fall in a month before the sampling time the concentration increased rapidly in downstream whereas it maintained low level in upstream. 5. The results of analysis of water samples collected from thirteen tributaries suggest that the tendency of the concentration of heavy metals to increase from up to downstreams was caused by agricultural and mainly domestic or industrial activities on the basin. 6. There was a linear relation between the concentration of sodium and copper in the main stream, however the relation between sodium or copper and other heavy melals were not linear except in downstream.
