Vol.13 No.2

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between the daily physical activity level and fall-proofrelated fitness in older female adults. METHODS: This study promoted and sampled the subjects who participated in the study for 2 weeks, and developed a basic information questionnaire to select the subjects to be excluded from the research. The amount of energy expenditure through daily physical activity was examined, and the elderly physical fitness, and balance test were analyzed. The subjects were divided into group A (≥1,500 kcal/week), group B (<1,500-≥1,000 kcal/week), and group C (<1,000 kcal/week) according to their daily physical activity level. RESULTS: A significant difference in the daily physical activity level (energy expenditure), Chair Stand Test (lower body strength), 8-Foot Up-and Go Test (dynamic balance), and CTSIB-M (modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance) was observed among groups A, B, and C (p< .5), but there was no significant difference in the Chair Sit-and-Reach Test (lower body flexibility) (p >.5). CONCLUSION: The increase in physical activity is an essential factor for preventing falls and it provides many health benefits for the elderly. On the other hand, considering that elderly people cannot access exercise programs easily in Korea, it can be predicted that increasing elderly people's physical activity in daily life rather than specific exercises may help prevent falls.

Vol.33 No.1

라인 댄스의 선정은 음악의 속도(bpm: 1분 당 박자 수)를 기준으로 느린 템포의 작품은 라이즈앤 폴(Rise‘ & Fall) 장르의 Rita``s Waltz``, 보통 빠른 템포의 작품은 펑키(Funky)장르의 ‘Jazz It Up’, 빠른 템포의 작품은 노벨티(Novelty)장르의 ‘Hit the Road Jack``으로 선정하였다. Hit the Road Jack, Rita``s Waltz, Jazz It Up의 순으로 각각129.4±14.2bpm(%HRR;58.2±11.2%), 136.6±11.2bpm(%HRR;52±13.2%), 148.5±16.2bpm(%HRR;68±15.2%)이었다. Hit the Road Jack, Rita``s Waltz, Jazz It Up의 순으로 0.09±0.02kcal/kg/min, 0.07±0.01kcal/kg/min, 0.13±0.02kcal/kg/min이었다. This study investigated the difference of heart rate response and energy expenditure between three types of line dance. The three types of line dance included on the basis of tempo of dance music; the slow-tempo Rita’s Waltz in the Rise and Fall genre, fast-tempo Hit the Road Jack in the Novelty genre, moderate fast-tempo Jazz it up in the Funky genre. The subject of this study were 20 male and female students whose major was exeercise science in the S university. Resting and maximal heart rate from maximal exercise test were obtained. Subjects were hooked up with HR sensor and moniotr(Polar, Finland) and Accelerometer(e-stp, Japan) during performance of 3 types of line dance, to obtain heart rate, steps, and energy expenditure. Average heart rate during the performance of Hit the Road Jack, Rita``s Waltz, Jazz It Up were 129.4±14.2bpm(%HRR;58.2±11.2%),136.6±11.2bpm(%HRR;52±13.2%), 148.5±16.2bpm(%HRR;68±15.2%), respectively. Energy expenditure per unit of time and weight of Hit the Road Jack, Rita``s Waltz, Jazz It Up were 0.09±0.02kcal/kg/min, 0.07±0.01kcal/kg/min, 0.13±0.02kcal/kg/min. Jazz it up showed the highest exercise intensity and the energy expenditure. The result of this study indicated the complexity of movement and tempo of music might be the main factor to influence on the heart rate response and energy expenditure during rhythmic exercise like line dance.

Vol.14 No.4

PURPOSE: This study examined the effectiveness of an active lifestyle on the HRV and fitness of the older female adults. METHODS: Eighty female older adults (72.68±3.78 years) were sampled from a senior wellness institute. Accelerometers were distributed to each participant to have the device attached to them for one week, and the physical activity data (Energy expenditure in Kcal) of each participant were analyzed. Participants were divided into 3 groups (<1,000 Kcal vs 1,000 to 1,500 Kcal vs ≥1,500 Kcal) based on the amount of weekly physical activity. Before and after data analysis, the HRV was measured at resting state and the Senior Fitness Test was performed. RESULTS: One way ANOVA showed a significant difference in the HRV between the three groups. Group A (≥ 1,500 Kcal) was superior in HF and HF/HF + LF whereas Group C (<1,000 Kcal) showed high level of LF, LF/HF, and LF/HF+LF. The same statistics revealed significant differences in fitness. Most of the fitness variables were superior in Group A and B compared to Group C. Significant correlations were observed between physical activity and both HRV and in fitness. CONCLUSION: Theses results suggest that an active lifestyle may be an effective intervention for the prevention of both cardiometabolic disorder and improvement of the fitness level in older female adults.

Vol.0 No.48

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of regular exercise on CAD risk factors in taxi drivers. The experimental group participated in exercise program every other day, for three days per week. Exercise duration was increased by ten minutes every four weeks, starting from twenty minutes. Of the three exercise sessions per week, two were walking and one was aerobic exercise using gym ball. Blood tests and body measurements were conducted and sociopsychological questionnaires were collected for both the participating group and the control group, before and after the exercise program. The participating group showed improvement in systolic blood pressure, Framingham risk score, and stress index, while the drop-out group from the exercise program showed negative changes in hip circumference and Beck Anxiety Inventory. The control group showed negative changes in Framingham risk score and Beck Depression Inventory. In the group of taxi drivers who had participated in at least 20 of the 36 exercise sessions during the 12-week period, Framingham risk score decreased significantly. They were also the only group to show decrease in stress index. Despite the short time period, this study could confirm that exercise was indeed an intervention method that brings partially improvement in coronary heart disease risk factors.

Vol.11 No.2

Joo, K.C., Ko, S.S, Byeon, J.K., Jung, D.J., Song, S.H. The Electrocardiogram at Rest and during Graded Exercise in Athletes. Exercise Science, 11(2): 467-482, 2002. Our Study was performed for the purpose of examinining what the EGG of athletes would be different from that of non-athletes, what the difference in EGG change during exercise would be like among different type of athletes, and what the useful criteria for identifying pathological EGG patterns might be available. We recruited 144 high school athletes in Chongju city. After resting ECGs of 144 students were tested, we randomly selected 9 from each 3 group of athletes, that was HS/LD, MS/MD, LS/HD. For the first purpose, we analysed resting EGG of 144 athlets. 3(athletic type)×5(exercise stage) combined ANOVA was used for the second purpose. The results we obtained from this study were as followings : First, there appeared abnormal resting EGG patterns in athletes. Second, the majority of ECGs occurred were early repolarization(male 96.7%, female 98.0%), sinus bradycardia(male 81.7%, female 45.1%), LVH(male 52.7%, female 16.0%), IRBBB(male 37.6%, female 17.6%), sinus arrhythmia(male 21.5%, female 11.8%). 1st degree AVB was appeared in 10.8% of male and 4,0% of female athletes. Miscellaneous ECGs were RAH/LAH(male 2.2%), PAC(male 1.1%), Atrial rhythm(male 1.1%, female 2.0%), Junctional rhythm(male 1.1%), and RVH(male 1.1%). Third, Showing normal ECG responses in all the 3 groups of athletes during graded exercise, could support that pathological-like abnormal ECG occurred at rest were only due to the physiologic adaptation to the training. Forth, the fact that Sokolow-Lyon criteria was the highest in LS/HD, and lowest in HS/LD indicated ECG would read differently the type of cardiac hypertrophy due to different training stimuli.
