Bauhaus, founded in Weimar, Germany in 1919, represented Modernism which is proven in the field of art as well as architecture. Furthermore, in design field, Bauhaus is the essential historical event whose influence continues in contemporary design. Bauhaus furniture is simple and austere and has linear shapes which are suitable for mass production. Bauhaus developed functional furniture design such as knock-down and pre-fabricated furniture. In terms of finishes, Bauhaus furniture epitomizes the influence of De Stijl which used either achromatic colors and three primary colors or natural finishes of wood. Bauhaus contributed to furniture design field as below. 1. Success in mass-produced furniture through standardization and pre-fabrication 2. A joint brand of furniture companies named Gaboro has been officially launched in the form of a juridical foundation. It was invested by Seoul City and the union members for regenerating the furniture companies in Seoul on August 1, 2003. However, Gaboro still has a few problems to overcome for successful business from joint marketing. Firstly, Gaboro must create a R&D post in order to lead the member companies through consistent production of furniture in addition to engraving its brand. Secondly, the head office of Gaboro must be authorized to prevent each union member from manufacturing the furniture products not well suited to the fresh brand. In addition, the member companies justly need to regulate the product items, and simultaneously to accept the new image concepts. Lastly, Gaboro needs to launch unique items to discriminate its design from other competitive companies.

Deutsche Werkbund, founded in 1907 and closed by Nazis in 1934, is affected on German economic growth and industry The purpose of the association was the improvement of industrial materials as emphasizing the close relationship between artists and industrialists. The group is developed within the contrast idea of Hermann Muthesius who wanted the standardization of industries and of Henry van der Velde who wanted the freedom of artistic expression based on individualism. The furniture of DWB in terms of function exemplifies remarkable structures compare to furniture existed eyer before. The use of such functional elements as shelves, casters and drawers in rectangular forms is notable. And the form make it possible to utilize in small spaces. Thus, the furniture of DWB represents such standards in industrial design as simple, and geometric forms without any ornamentation.

German furniture design had been downward in trend after Bauhaus closed and through the War. Meanwhile Italy emerged as a center in furniture industry after the Second World War. After the Unification in 1989, however, German furniture still play predominant role in the world since they have their own unique quality and territory. This study explores the significance of German furniture design by three different eras-Post-war recession (1946-1965), Arising times (1966-1989), Contemporary (1990-2005)-and categorized the major characteristics are summarized as in the below. First, function oriented design Second, pursuing perfection of technology Third, simplicity and purity of design.

독일대학 가구디자인 관련학과 교육과정에 관한 연구

Our furniture industry is rapidly changing due to the declining economy. The existing weak furniture industry in Korea has yielded its inability to complete in a very competitive marketplace. The furniture companies lack the special necessary skills and professional knowledge necessary to design and manufacture furniture. Therefore, constant effort by designers and managers is needed in order to strengthen the Korean furniture industry's strategy and advance it into becoming a recognized player in the area of furniture design, worldwide. Designers has to have systematic training in order to have insight into upcoming international trends and incorporate new manufacturing techniques immediately.<br/> This study will analyze the curriculums related to furniture design departments in Universities<br/> and technical schools in Germany, a leader in the furniture industry.<br/> It will present new educational ideas and program for furniture designers in the Korean universities.<br/> Keywords: furniture design, curriculum, Germany, program for furniture designers<br/>

한국 현대목공예의 문제점 및 방향에 관한 연구

This study aims to report on the problems of the Korean woodcraft in the past and to suggest a new direction for the development strategy, in line with the government policy to promote domestic craft culture industry. This includes the problems of the woodcraft in Korea which have been raising in contest-exhibits organized not only by industry and academia, but also by government. The survey asked 48 people (24 in industry and 24 in academia) shows as follows. The most serious problem shown in industry is the government-sponsored issue and it should be premised on offering the market in this case. The question in academia reports that the academic world little contributes to the development in industrial circles of the woodcraft, and the problematic issues of the contests are the appraisal standard and the method of evaluation. In brief, the government’s aggressive support should be always first and foremost for the woodcraft industry which is often confronted with difficulties in research & development and in securing distribution channels due to it’ small scale of business. Furthermore, the government-led contest and certificate of qualifications should be redesign for filling the original purpose and throughly carried out for the development of industries. Also university curriculum being far too disconnected from industries now should be focused on the collaboration between industry and university, the training mission and the related seminars to overhaul the contents of the department of the woodcraft and to create a progressive direction for the future accordingly.

유아용 목재완구의 특성분석

On the ground of that toy as for infants is an important tool for education as well as play and furthermore it has a great influences on their growth and development, the present study intends to analyze the characteristics of the infant-oriented toys made of wood, the environment-friendly material. Object of the study includes the infants aged 2 to 7, and the wooden toy not only in domestic also international cases are investigated and analyzed from the point of function and design in particular, and the infant-oriented wooden toy is finally characterized. The wooden toys are classified in 5 items according to functions. There are toy helping a physical development like small muscles, toy improving the creativity, toy assisting language learning like Korean & English, toy contributing to number understanding and counting, and toy for imitation of social roles. The characteristics of the wooden toy are that the natural color & grain of wood are shown first, and also the natural texture & aroma of wood are felt secondly, and geometric design and shape are often presented thirdly, and recycling is available fourthly, and it is expensive finally. In order to revitalize the wooden toys lagging behind the cheap and diverse toys made of plastic, it is highly needed that development of the environment-friendly painting, unique design, marketing strategy of enterprises and use of domestic wood material.

평상(平牀)의 역사적 고찰

The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of Pyeong Sang and to establish the identity of Korean furniture. From the Three Kingdoms to the Goryeo Dynasty, when there were no artifacts related to Pyeong Sang, records about Pyeong Sang were investigated based on ancient literature of the Korean history database. Since the Joseon Dynasty, when there were artifacts, Pyeong Sang was analyzed through records and artifacts. Pyeong Sang includes both sitting chair form and lying bed form. It consists of floor and leg, and the height of the leg ranges from being able to strech the leg to being completely absent. Pyeong Sang was used in both Goguryeo and China, and in the Silla Dynasty, it was limited to decorate Pyeong Sang by class. Since the Silla Dynasty, it was used not only in palaces but also in temples. In the Goreyo Dynasty, up to two people can sit on the Pyeong Sang and it was used to hold important events and treat state guests in the palace. Records of the Goreyo Dynasty on the Pyeong Sang show that it was also used on battlefields and ships, and that the wooden bench was also made of bamboo, indicating that the scope of use was wider than that of the Three Kingdom. In the Joseon Dynasty, Pyeong Sang was used for various events as well as funerals by royal family and nobility. Most of Pyeong Sang are Jak Pyeon Sang that two Pyeong Sang are attached together or Sal Pyeong Sang that floor is consist of narrow rung. As material for the Pyeong Sang, solid wood was used with metal feldspar such as Gamjabi and Gwangdujeong. In modern times, Pyeong Sang became so common that it was used in theaters. Today, it is not only used as a home bed, but also as a place to communicate between viliage members or outsiders.

담양 죽제품 연구

This paper or article is about bamboo products from Damyang that have been degenerated by the threat of Chinese low-cost products. Comparing the products from Damyang and China, we could point out four problems and come up with solutions. Firstly, we need strong and specific storytelling based on historical facts and various research to boost the bamboo industry. In order to introduce interesting storytelling to the public, it is also necessary to train some good-quality workers. The public would be more familiar with the bamboo products from Damyang than Chinese products. Secondly, technologies used for bamboo products from Damyang are extremely behind the times. Skill shortages for bamboo products caused to create unattractive products to the public for approximately 30 years. Thus, we need to acquire advanced technologies from abroad as well as to develop our own. Thirdly, Even though attractive bamboo products would be produced with advanced technologies, workers in bamboo industry lack knowledge of distribution channels and marketing strategy so that there is no way to introduce their products effectively to the consumers. Therefore, government agencies or marketers should educate workers to help running their business successfully. Finally, bamboo products have been fashion and living items for some specific consumers for the last years. However, we need to create variously new types of bamboo products through the collaboration with a wide range of artists to be widely appealing. In conclusion, it is important to be aware of the problems and solutions above. The 17th Bamboo Expo in Damyang will be a great opportunity to introduce Korean bamboo products in worldwide and develop the bamboo industry.

채색기법을 활용한 야외벤치 리폼개발 연구

This study is a development plan to reform the park benches using coloring method which are located at the Forest Grand Park (Soorimdaegongwon) with the address of Mook-dong, Jungrang-gu in Seoul where the Rose Festival yearly takes place, at the request of Jungrang-gu Office in Seoul. The case studies of reform design using coloring were investigated through literature review and internet, and the actual design process was applied to the field of the park benches. The coloring of benches is one of the most popular methods of extending the life span of the benches in case of the paint fallen off and/or the aged & damaged wood before their removal, and the painting should be completely conducted to keep the wood view off. According to the request from the Jungrang-gu Office, the concept was to use the echo-materials and to place the roses as the topic of the painting in consideration of the harmony with park bench’s surrounding also for a period other than the Festival and to utilize the coloring method. Students started with their sketches and the in consultation with the Jungrang-gu Office selected ideas among them have been applied to 4 park benches. The result showed however that the bench itself looked as beautiful as like the original sketch without the users, but the basically pursued image of the beautiful bench was damaged when anyone sat on the bench, because the painting was partially obscured. In case of the back of a bench therefore, the coloring on the back part should play a meaningful role as a photo zone, while the painting with a simple pattern or the coloring only would be effective in case of the bench without the back. This survey shows that the bench itself has been more photographed thanks to it’s good-looking image than when the people sat on it. In other words, we need to consider a photo zone role when making benches with the back, although the original concept did not aim it.
