Characteristics of electrodelss lamp as a load of the ballast is different compared to normal fluorescent lamp because the lamp includes the magnetics for inductive discharging process. So somewhat different modeling is necessary to make a proper power match between the lamp and ballast. Modeling of an electrodeless lamps, Endura of Osram, is presented in this paper. Simulation with a result of experiment is given for a verification of proposed model.

In a design of ballast for discharge lamp, various kind of protection circuit are essential for safe operation. In this paper, overvoltage and current detection, no-load detection, lamp-fault detection, end of lamp detection for protection are introduced. Individual circuit operation and their function are described with the base that all circuit form is similar with overvoltage protection circuit.

In recent, modeling methods for fluorescent lamp are developed well in both static and dynamic state. The models help reliable ballast to be developed in more fast time. This paper reviews the concept and method for well developed models, especially, circuit oriented models using PSpice.

Active power factor correction methods for electronic ballast are reviewed in this paper. PFC technology becomes more important due to various wattage ratings of new light sources. Expecially, most popular two method, critical conduction mode and average mode, are described. Each characteristics are compared in relation to application target and power rating.

In the gas discharge lamp, starting procedure is composed of several physical discharge phases. The detailed phenomena are different according to lamp characteristics and ballasting method. This paper reviews starting methods in fluorescent lamp, and the starting procedure of HID lamp are investigated based on reviewed various waveforms.

This paper shows the method of modeling and simulation of isolation type LED driver circuit. Circuit of Flyback type converter is constructed for simulation. Simulation includes the proper selection of important circuit parameters and power rating of components. Various performances in both continuous current control mode and discontinuous current control mode are analyzed. This results show that simulation approach is useful for circuit optimization and reduction of development time.

Ballasts for HID lamp need a igniter to start the lamp with very high voltage over several ㎸. Electronic ballasts use various internal igniter in electronic circuits. The paper describe the simulation method for designing the igniter, which helps selecting the component properly by estimating operation voltage and current in circuits.

Power supply technique for electrodeless lamps, especially self-oscillation method, is presented in this paper for Endura of Osram. The power supply uses different method for high efficiency at high frequency operation compared to the conventional method using saturable transformer. Exact parameter tuning using simulation is suggested for effective design for real applications.
