Brewster Angle Microscope를 이용한 액정 배향막 연구

The surface morphology of liquid crystal alignment layer has been investigated by using Brewster angle microscope(BAM) for the first time. The samples used in this work for liquid crystal alignment layer were mechanically rubbed polyimide films. The rubbing pattern on this layer has been analyzed with the terms of microgroove and rubbing induced optical birefringence. For the mechanically rubbed surface, the geometrical factors of microgroove play the major role for the formation of rubbing pattern. We propose that the BAM can be used as a powerful tool not only for observing the rubbing pattern, but also for inspecting the surface defects.
Fabrication of FePt Nanoparticle Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Monodisperse FePt nanopartcles were synthesized by polyol reduction of Pt(acac)2 and thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 with stabilizing agents. As-synthesized particles of around 4 nm diameter are monodispersed with a narrow size distribution. Ultra thin films with several stacks of the FePt monolayer had been fabricated using Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer transfer technique. From the pressure/area isotherm, the shift and intensity variation of ATR (Attenuated Total Reflection) minima, we had first observed that FePt monolayers were stacked successfully. An in-line fiber optic attenuator has been demonstrated based on a side polished fiber technique The optical power can be attanuated via an evanescent coupling between the optical fiber and the overlay material. Attenuation levels down to 30dB was observed.

The phase transition at 320K was studied for the Langmuir-Blodgett films of copolymer of vinylidene fluoride (70%) and trifluoroethylene (30%). Polarization modulated ellipsometry(PME) method was firstly used to analyzed this phenomena in this work. The transition at 320K was observed only in the films prior to the thermal treatment and found to exhibit irreversible properties. This transition may be due to the dielectric relaxation of this polymer and is presumably related to the elastic limit of the crystal structure.

We have studied the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the Langmuir(L) films of polyamic acid alkyl amin salt in which the nonlinear optic (NLO) chromophore (triphnylamino-(p-nitrophnyl)-ethylene group) was substituted as a side chain by using Brewster angle microscope(BAM) and second harmonic generation (SHG) technique. The collapse point in a π-A isotherm is generally defined as the surface pressure where the monolayers are riding on top of each other and disordered multilayers are being formed. But in this experiment using BAM and SHG, suprisingly the collapse was not found at the collapse point but found near the surface pressure where the liquid condensed(LC)-liquid expended(LE) phase transition occur.
고분자 Langmuir-Blodgett 박막의 제작 및 두께 특성

The copolymer Langmuir-Blodgett films of P(VDF-TrFE) are successfully fabricated by horizontal (Schemer) deposition method. Even though this copolymer is not a good amphiphiles, it was found that sufficiently stable Languor layer can be made as top of the water sulphas. The thickness characteristics of LB layer have been investigated by surface plasmas reassigns (SPR) technique. The linear behavior of the resonance peak displacement clearly shows that the thickness of the SBA masolayer does not change drastically up to 9 layers.
Fabrication and Optical Study of P(VDF-TrFE) Langmuir-Blodgett Films

For an electro-optic study, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene, P(VDF-TrFE) were fabricated using the Langmuir-Schaefer deposition method. For the first time, the electro-optic (E/O) coefficient was measured for the P(VDF-TrFE) LB films. The E/O coefficient in this film was measured to be 200 pm/V, two orders of magnitude larger than the values of several pm/V typically found in poled E/O materials. The E/O coefficients were measured as a function of time to monitor the relaxation behavior of the dipole structure of the LB film. So far, they have exhibited an extremely stable temporal stability with no relaxation of the E/O coefficient. In this paper, we will report the details of the fabrication process, as well as the electro-optical characteristics of this LB film.

The Characteristics of micro bubbles were studied by using optical scattering technique. The polarization changes of scattered light were analyzed by Mueller matrix. The linear dependence of surfactant concentration was found at the back scattering angle of 150° and the extinction ratio of 56.2.

The Langmuir monolayers of polyamic acid salts with three kinds of alkyl chains have been investigated by means of conventional $\pi$-A isotherms and second harmonic generation measurements proposed in this paper. The surface molecular density dependence of second harmonic intensity clearly shows the region of aggregation while corresponding $\pi$-A isotherm doesn't show any changes in the surface morphology at the same region. The surface morphology analysis based on the second harmonic measurement was consistent with the Brewster angle microscope measurement results.

Surface Reflectance and Photoacoustic strength from silver electrode in the electrochemical Cell were measured as a function of electrode potential. These results can be successibly analyzed by adatom picture and light absorption due to adatom was measured.
