Why do some countries walk on the right and others on the left? People have a dominant hand which leads to a natural tendency to favor one side of the road or another depending on the means of transportation being used. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the stereotype of Korean regarding preferred walking direction in encountering various facilities and provide the appropriate information to traffic policy makers. Six hundred Korean male and female subjects aging from 12 to 83 were selected to investigate the various statistics about their preferred walking direction and their employment characteristics on walking diverse facilities. The walking directions of eleven different facilities were asked along with other relative subjects' characteristics(e.g., age, gender, hand and foot dominance) to determine the relationship among these obtained data. The descriptive statistics showed that 73.7% and 26.3% were preferred walking right and left direction respectively. Moreover, various statistical analysis revealed that general tendency of walking direction was varied by hand and foot dominances. There were strong tendency that right-handed people prefer walking right side of the road and vise versa, hence this should be considered in setting up traffic policies. As a concluding remark, it is better to design traffic policies and regulations in the way that peoples' preference and expectation.
치매유발제인 알루미늄에 대한 Rosmarinic Acid의 보호 효과

치매유발제인 AlCl<sub>3</sub>에 대한 rosmarinic acid의 영향을 알아보기 위하여 뇌세포종인 배양 C6 glioma 세포를 배양한 후 세포생존율을 비롯한 전자공여능(electron donating ability, EDA), SOD-유사활성(superoxide dismutase-like activity) 및 지질과산화(lipid peroxidation) 억제능을 조사하였다. 본 연구에서 AlCl<sub>3</sub>는 배양 세포에 농도 의존적으로 세포생존율을 대조군에 비하여 유의하게 감소시킴으로서 세포독성을 나타냈다. 또한, AlCl<sub>3</sub>의 XTT<sub>50</sub>값이 142.2 μM에서 나타남으로 이는 Borenfreund와 Puerner의 독성판정기준에 의하여 중간독성(mid-toxic)인것으로 나타났다. 한편, rosmarinic acid가 AlCl<sub>3</sub>에 미치는 영향에 있어서, 40 μM rosmarinic acid 처리에서는 AlCl<sub>3</sub>만의 처리에 비하여 세포생존율을 유의하게 증가시킴으로서 AlCl<sub>3</sub>의 산화적 손상으로부터 세포손상을 보호하였다. 또한 rosmarinicacid는 전자공여능을 비롯한 SOD-유사활성 및 지질과산화의 억제효과를 보임으로서 항산화능을 나타냈다. 이상의 결과로부터 산화적 손상이 AlCl<sub>3</sub>의 독성에 관여하고 있으며, rosmarinicacid는 항산화능에 의하여 AlCl<sub>3</sub>의 독성을 효과적으로 방어하였다. 따라서, rosmarinic acid와 같은 천연성분은 치매와 같이 산화적 손상과 관련된 병변의 치료적 개선을 위한 천연 소재로서의 가능성을 제시하였다. To examine the protective effect of rosmarinic acid on the aluminum of dementia inducer, cultured C6 glioma cells were treated with various concentrations of aluminum chloride (AlCl<sub>3</sub>) or rosmarinic acid. The cell viability, electron donating ability (EDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation were evaluated for the antioxidant effect of rosmarinic acid. In these cultures, AlCl<sub>3</sub> sowed a cytotoxic effect by decreasing the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner; then, the XTT<sub>50</sub> value was measured at 142.2 μM of AlCl<sub>3</sub> after treating the cultured C6 glioma cells with media containing 120∼160 μM AlCl<sub>3</sub>. Therefore, its toxicity was determined as mid-cytotoxic by Borenfreund and Puerner`s toxic criteria; while, vitamin E of antioxidant markedly increased the cell viability on AlCl<sub>3</sub>-induced cytotoxicity in these cultures. This study showed the antioxidant effect of rosmarinic acid via several assays, such as electron donating activity (EDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation. From these findings, it is suggested that the oxidative stress is involved in AlCl<sub>3</sub>-induced cytotoxicity, and rosmarinic acid was effective in the protection of AlCl<sub>3</sub>-induced cytotoxicity by antioxidant activity. In conclusion, natural resources, like rosmarinic acid, may be a putative antioxidant agent for the treatment of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated disease, such as dementia.
청년층 사용자 선호도 평가를 통한 박스손잡이의 최적위치 설정

Handles on objects are very important to increase the safety and efficiency of manual handling of people who use them. In this study, four different prototype cartons combined with auxiliary handles were designed to determine the optimal handle position of cartons through the evaluation of user preferences. Twenty male students are participated in the experiment. Likert-5 point summated rating method was applied to evaluate the user preferences for provided handles of the carton among upper, middle, and lower position under the four different sizes and materials handling conditions(carrying positions). The results show that the subjects preferred upper part of the handle on the small cartons regardless of the carrying positions while upper and middle parts of the handle on the big cartons for handling above the waist height were preferred. An optimal handle position depending on the different sizes of carton and the different carrying positions were recommended based on the results of evaluation. It is thus recommended that the cartons provide handles on its relevant position depending on the size and materials handling condition to reduce the musculoskeletal stress and in turn to increase the user satisfaction.
배양 인체 피부 흑색종세포에 대한 제라늄오일의 항산화 활성 및 멜라닌 합성에 미치는 영향

For the purpose of searching for whitening resources using essential oil of herb, the antioxidative activity and melanogenesis of Geranium (Palargonium graveolens) oil were examined in cultured human skin melanoma cells (SK-MEL-3). the cell viability, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation, tyrosinase activity and total amount of melanin were measured by colorimetric assay. For this experiment, SK-MEL-3 cells were treated with the media containing 25~55 μU/mL, glucose oxidase (GO) for 4 hours, and assessed for the cytotoxicity. GO significantly decreased cell viability compared with control and XTT50 value was determined at 45 μU/mL of GO. In the antioxidative activity of Geranium oil, it showed SOD-like activity and the inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation. While, in the melanogenesis of Geranium oil, Geranium oil significantly decreased the tyrosinase activity and total amount of melanin which were increased by GO-induced cytotoxicity. From these results, it is suggested that Geranium oil was effective in the protection of GO-induced cytotoxicity by antioxidative activity and inhibitory effect of melanogenesis. Finally, an essential oil such as Geranium oil may be a putative agent for the improvement of whitening effect.

최근 국지성 집중호우로 산사태 발생에 의한 인명 및 재산피해가 빈번하게 발생하고 있다. 산사태 발생시기는 예측하기 어려우며 산사태 발생시 토사재해 제어장치의 대응시점을 결정하는 것 또한 현실적으로 매우 어려운 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 산사태 발생시 토사재해 제어장치의 작동 여부를 파악할 수 있는 모니터링 기술이 탑재된 EDO-X SS-200(T-300)을 개발하였다. 개발된 모니터링 장치는 지표경사 및 미세진동을 실시간 관측하여 토석류의 도달시간을 산정할 수 있으므로 대응시설물의 작동시간 등을 실시간 모니터링 할 수 있다. 이에 토석류의 물리적 매개변수를 산정 및 예측하는데 도움을 주어 토사재해로 인한 인명 및 재산피해를 최소화 하는데 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. Recent changes in local torrential rainfalls are evident due to frequent occurrences of human life and property damage caused by landslides due to localized heavy rainfall caused by the extreme global weather phenomena. It is difficult to predict when the landslides occurs, and it is actually very difficult to determine the time when the mud-debris disaster defense and control system is applied when the landslides occurs. Therefore, in this research, we developed the EDO-X SS-200 with on-board the monitoring technology that can verify the operation of the mud-debris disaster defense and control system when the landslides occurs. Monitoring Method can be used to calculate the time to reach mud-debris flow and the operation time of mud-debris disaster defense and control system can be monitored in real time and the physical parameters of mud-debris flow can be calculated to help improve the prediction technology. It is expected that it can help to minimize the loss of lives and property caused by disasters.
