        저온숙성마늘 농축액을 첨가한 양갱의 품질특성과 항산화 효과

        This study was performed to investigate the quality characteristics of Yanggaeng, including color, pH, total polyphenol contents, and antioxidant activities, with the addition of aged garlic extract (0, 3, 6, 9 or 12%), aged at low temperatures. Among the color characteristics, the lightness value decreased, and the redness and yellowness values increased, proportional to the amount of garlic extract concentrate added to Yanggaeng. The pH of Yanggaeng significantly (p<0.05) decreased according to the amount of aged garlic extract added. Total phenol contents of control (0% aged garlic extract added Yanggaeng) was the lowest, followed by 3, 6, 9, 12% aged garlic extract added to Yanggaeng (88.15, 118.39, 156.91, 208.79 mg/g, respectively). Antioxidant activities, such as DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, significantly increased with increase in the aged garlic extract concentration. In the sensory evaluation for Yanggaeng, 6% aged garlic extract added to Yanggaeng had the highest score in taste, flavor, and overall acceptance. Based on these results, it is suggest that the addition of 6% aged garlic extract to Yanggaeng can be developed as a product for the elderly.

        Physical Inactivity and Unhealthy Metabolic Status Are Associated with Decreased Natural Killer Cell Activity

        Purpose: Several studies have reported relationships among physical activity, healthy metabolic status, and increased naturalkiller (NK) cell activity. However, large-scale data thereon are lacking. Thus, the present study aimed to assess NK cell activity accordingto physical activity and metabolic status. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 12014 asymptomatic examinees. Using a patented stimulatorycytokine, NK cell activity was quantitated by the amount of interferon-γ secreted into the plasma by NK cells. Physical activity levelswere assessed using the validated Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. Results: The physically inactive group showed lower NK cell activity than the minimally active group (median, 1461 vs. 1592 pg/mL,p<0.001) and health-enhancing physically active group (median, 1461 vs. 1712 pg/mL, p=0.001). Compared to women with abody mass index (BMI) of 18.5−27.5 kg/m2, those with a BMI <18.5 kg/m2 had significantly lower NK cell activity (1356 vs. 1024 g/mL,p<0.001), and those with a BMI ≥27.5 kg/m2 tended to have lower NK cell activity (1356 vs. 1119 g/mL, p=0.070). Subjects withhigh hemoglobin A1c levels and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, as well as men with high blood pressure andwomen with high triglyceride levels, exhibited lower NK cell activity. Moreover, physical inactivity and metabolic abnormalitieswere independently associated with low NK cell activity, even after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: Physical inactivity and metabolic abnormalities are associated with reduced NK cell activity. Immune systems maybecome altered depending on physical activity and metabolic status.

        채취시기별 보검선인장 줄기의 항산화, 항당뇨 및 항알츠하이머 활성평가

        In this study, we assessed antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-Alzheimer activities of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten (OFI) at harvest time. OFIs were cultivated December 2015~November 2016 in Jeju island. The 70% ethanol extracts of OFI were used to investigate total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant(DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay), anti-diabetic(yeast α-glucosidase and rat α-glucosidase inhibition assay), and anti-Alzheimer(Acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition assay) activities. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of OFIs were 17.40~23.11 μg garlic acid/mg Ex and 2.17~6.22 ug (+)-catechine/mg Ex, respectively. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity of OFIs were 131.98~184.90 mg ascorbic acid(AA) eq/100 g and 63.60~101.83 mg AA eq/100 g, respectively. In the anti-diabetic and anti-Alzheimer activities, 70% ethanol extracts of OFI exhibited moderate inhibition activity, compared to control (acarbose and beberine). Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-Alzheimer activities were no significant differences by season, respectively. Therefore, information on comparative biological evaluations of OFI may be a beneficial in exploring functional food and drug development.         Using Forceps Biopsy after Small Submucosal Dissection in the Diagnosis of Gastric Subepithelial Tumors

        The current tissue sampling techniques for subepithelial tumors (SETs) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract have limited diagnostic efficacy. We evaluated the diagnostic yield and safety of forceps biopsies after small endoscopic submucosal dissection (SESD biopsies) in the diagnosis of gastric SETs. A total of 42 patients with gastric SETs > 10 mm were prospectively enrolled between May 2013 and October 2014. A dual knife was used to incise the mucosa and submucosa and forceps biopsies were then introduced deep into the lesion. To compare SESD biopsies with EUS-FNA, we used the retrospective data of 30 EUS-FNA cases. The diagnostic yield of SESD biopsies was comparable to that of EUS-FNA (35/42, 83.3% vs. 24/30, 80.0%, P = 0.717). The mean procedure time of SESD biopsies was shorter than that of EUS-FNA (10 vs. 37 minutes, P < 0.001). There were no procedure-related adverse events in the both group. The pathological diagnoses in SESD biopsies group included 15 leiomyomas, 7 GISTs, 10 heterotopic pancreases, 2 lipomas, and one other lesion. SESD biopsies are an easy, effective and safe technique for the diagnosis of gastric SETs and its diagnostic yield is comparable to that of EUS-FNA. This technique may be a reliable alternative to conventional EUS-FNA (Clinical trial registration No. KCT0000730).

        Appropriate Surveillance Interval after Colonoscopic Polypectomy in Patients Younger than 50 Years

        Background: Current postpolypectomy surveillance guidelines are based on studies in patients aged ≥50 years. Equal application of the guidelines in patients aged < 50 years may be unreasonable. We aimed to determine an appropriate surveillance interval after adenoma removal in patients aged < 50 years. Methods: We studied 10,013 patients who underwent ≥ 1 adenoma removal and follow-up colonoscopy. The cumulative risk of metachronous advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACRN) was compared among the eight groups based on age (30–39, 40–44, 45–49 and ≥ 50 years) and baseline adenoma characteristics (low- [LRA] and high-risk adenoma [HRA]). Results: The risk of metachronous ACRN in patients aged 30–39 and 40–44 years with HRA was comparable to that in those aged ≥ 50 years with LRA (P = 0.839 and P = 0.381, respectively). However, the risk in those aged 45–49 years with HRA was higher than in those aged ≥ 50 years with LRA (P = 0.003), and the risk was not significantly different from that in those aged ≥ 50 years with HRA (P = 0.092). Additionally, the 5-year cumulative risk in those aged 45–49 years with LRA was not significantly different from that in those aged ≥ 50 years with LRA. Conclusion: The postpolypectomy surveillance interval can be extended up to 5 years in patients aged 30–44 years with HRA, similar to those aged ≥ 50 years with LRA. However, the interval in patients aged 45–49 years with HRA and LRA should be 3 and 5 years, respectively, similar to those aged ≥ 50 years.

        Oral Health Status and Oral Health-related Quality of Life According to Presence or Absence of Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

        Background: Oral mucositis during radiotherapy which is harmful to the patients with head and neck is suggested to be related to the oral hygiene and health. Therefore, we evaluated the oral health status in relation to the occurrence of mucositis among patients with head and neck cancer during radiotherapy. Methods: Tooth plaque index (PI), periodontal depth, and oral mucositis in 50 patients with head and neck cancer were examined by a dentist for 8 weeks after radiotherapy initiation. Cancer type and site were recorded based on the patients’ medical records. In addition, we assessed oral health-related quality of life. Results: The mean age of participants was 56.3 ± 11.6 years, with patients aged > 60 years comprising the largest proportion of the mucositis group. The median (range) of the PI index were 0 (0-3) and 1 (0-3) among participants with mucositis and those without, respectively, with no significant difference (P = 0.761). The median (range) of the total Oral Health Impact Profile score were 54 (42-58) and 41 (14-70) among participants without mucositis and those with mucositis, respectively (P = 0.037). Conclusions: This study showed that patients who developed mucositis during radiotherapy had lower oral health-related quality of life than those who did not. However, there was no difference in oral health status according to mucositis. (J Cancer Prev 2019;24:43-47)

        중학교 과학 교과서의 물리영역에 반영된 과학의 본성의 명시성 분석

        The purpose of the study was to analyze the level of explicit reflection of the nature of science (NOS) in the physics parts of the science textbooks published for middle-school students. The analysis framework to reveal explicit reflection of NOS was based on the seven aspects in the nature of science proposed by Lederman et al. (2002): the empirical nature of science knowledge,scientific theories and laws, the creative and imaginative nature of science, the theory-laden nature of science knowledge, social and cultural influences, the myth of the scientific method, and the tentative nature of science knowledge. For each aspect of the NOS,we made a rubric to determine the level of explicit reflection of science textbooks as 1 of 4 levels from 0 to +3 for each aspect. In the case of full explicit reflection, the +3 level was given while the 0 level was given in case of no reflection. We found that the myth of the scientific method and the tentative nature of science knowledge to be the aspects of NOS that tended to be more explicitly reflected than other aspects. In addition, the differencs among the areas of science textbooks as to the levels of explicit reflection of the NOS were high. 본 연구는 과학 교과서에 반영된 과학의 본성 및 그 명시성을 분석하는것을 목표로 한다. 교과서 분석의 기준을 설정하기 위하여 문헌연구,예비분석, 기준의 수정 및 보완, 최종 분석의 결과를 거쳤으며,분석기준은 Lederman et al. (2002)의 연구 결과에 기초하여교과서 분석에 맞게 수정하여 사용하였다. 교과서에 반영된 과학의 본성및 그 명시성을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 전체 교과서의 명시성점수는 0.35로 대부분의 교과서가 과학의 본성을 반영하고 있지 않거나암시적인 방법을 사용하여 제시하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 영역별로살펴볼 때, 과학을 하는 방법의 다양성이나 과학의 사회적이고 문화적인본성은 암시적으로 제시되어 있었으나 다른 영역은 잘 반영되어 있지않음이 나타났다. 과학의 본성은 과학적 소양의 함양 및 합리적인의사결정을 내리는 데 있어서 필수적인 요소이다. 그러므로 앞으로의교육과정 개발 및 교과서 개발 과정에 과학의 본성의 다양한 영역을 더욱명시적으로 제시하려는 노력이 필요할 것이다.
