Mothers of 113 Korean toddlers completed Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire(TBAQ) and Child Rearing Practice Report(CRPR). Observations of mother-child dyads in novel situations involving unfamiliar settings and adults assessed child`s behavioral inhibition. Nonsocial inhibition were measured by the amount of time each child spent in physical contact with his/her mother in free-play episodes. Adult-social inhibition was based on child`s behavior when an unfamiliar adult requested that the child approach her as she presented them with toys or activities. Results showed that TBAQ Social Fearfulness was positively associated with nonsocial and adult-social inhibition. TBAQ Pleasure was correlated negatively and TBAQ Anger Proneness positively correlated with adult-social inhibition. An interaction effect showed that child`s social fearfulness and mother`s overprotective behaviors affected adult-social inhibition. The regression model explained 31% of the variance.

This study investigated parental perceptions and practice of filial piety and in child rearing practices regarding filinal piety. The subjects of this study were 681 parents. 1) The results showed that most parents perceive, practice and teach their children the 12 virtues of filial piety. 2) There were significant differences in fathers` view (perception, practices, education) of ancestor-worship as found according to child developmental stage. The significant of difference in mother`s perceptions of emotional-care, ancestor-worship and persuasion and moral training was found according to child developmental stage. The significant differences in mother`s practices in moral training, economic-support, persuasion, and ancestor-worship, were found according to child developmental stage. The significant differences in mother`s child-rearing in gratefulness, moral-training, emotional-care, persuasion, obedience to parents, and ancestor-worship were found according to child developmental stage. 3) Traditional child-rearing behavior has declined.

This study investigated the relationship between preschool children`s social competence and perceived social support. The subjects were 85 children enrolled in 10 kindergartens and nurseries located in Seoul. Social support was assessed by children themselves with a social support dialogue Cask, My Family and Friends, developed by Reid, Lamdegman, and Jaccard (1989). This task consists of 12 dialogues based on Vygotskian principles. Social competency was assessed by teachers with a slightly modified version of Song`s Iowa Social Competency Scale (ISCS). The data were analyzed by frequencies percentiles, mean, one-way ANOVAs, and Pearson`s correlations. Results showed that (1) Children perceived parents to be the best multi-purpose social providers: mothers for emotional support and fathers for instrumental support. (2) Children with unemployed mothers perceived higher maternal emotional, informational, and instrumental support than children with employed mothers. (3) Middle-class children perceived higher friendship support than upper-or lower-class children. (4) Friendship support was the one variable most significantly related to children`s social competence.
