      • 영어의 Middle 동사와 그 구문특성에 대해서

        정수룡 서울保健大學 1992 論文集 Vol.12 No.1

This study is intended to survey the properties of middle verbs and their constructions of English in literature, for the overall consolidation will have the implications for learnability theory. The special concern is focused on the middle rules and explications of Keyser & Roeper(1984), Roberts(1985), and Fagan(1988). Keyser & Roeper concerns themselves especially with the differences between the lexical and syntactic properties of middles and ergatives and with the elaboration of their middle rule. Depending on the analysis of diagnostic lexical structures and on the close parallelism between middles and passives, they propose "Syntactic Movement Rule" as a middle rule. Roberts focuses his analytic observation on the aspect and thematic structure of middles and on their interactions, and proposes "Externalize Theme" as his middle rule. This rule requires non-assignment of external agent θ-role and externalization of internal theme θ-role, which provides stativity to middles. Thematic constancy and stativization are the core essentials of his middle rule. Fagan, arguing for the importance of the semantic analysis and explication, assumes that the middle formation is a process of genericization and proposes a middle rule that consists of two sub-rules: "Assign arb to the external θ-role", and "Externalize the direct θ-role". He claims that his middle rule accounts for the fact that the generically interpreted element is the implicit external argument and the fact that the direct internal argument is realized externally when the verb undergoes middle formation. The consolidation of the survey is as follows: (A) The attributes of the middle formation: This rule applies only to the transitive verbs with agent subject and theme object. This rule requires non-assignment of the external θ-role and externalization of the internal θ-role. This rule, being a lexical rule, requires no morphological operations and prohibits syntactic operations like reanalysis and raising, etc. (B) The lexical properties of middle verbs: This verb is semantically noneventive and aspectually stative and lexically intransitive. This verb, being a stative, cannot be an input to other lexical rules like-ing adjective formation, out - prefixation, etc. This verb, having an implicit argument, should be interpreted as a dyadic verb. (C) The properties of middle constructions: This construction, being stative and generic is typically realized in the simple present tense and with appropriate adverbial modifiers. I hope that the familiarity with these characteristic properties of the middles and their constructions will be of help to the mastery of general constructions of verbs of English.

      • 형용사적 수동의 전성규칙(APF)에 대해서 : 범주변화(Category Change)로 이루어지는 APF를 중심으로

        정수룡 서울保健大學 1989 論文集 Vol.9 No.1

This study aims to survey two types of adjectival passive formation (APF) rules that have long been discussed in the literature and to gain access to a way in which an appropriate APF and the properties of adjectival passive (AP) are realistically explicated and taught in our English classes. The first type surveyed is the APF rules by Wasow 1980, Williams 1981, and Bresnan 1982, all basically concerned with and based on thematic analysis for the external argument of the AP. This rule type generally stipulates the thematic condition that the internal argument of the base verb to be externalized or the external argument of an AP must bear theme-role. The second type surveyed is the APF of Levin and Rappaport. Claiming that the externalization of the internal role of the base verb effected by an APF is an output of category-change, they refuse to stipulate any restrictive condition. Instead, they adopt the morphological change of Bresnan deriving an AP participle from a verbal passive (VP) participle and propose an APF that consists solely of category-change. Their APF, however, entails the interaction of the lexical-thematic properties of verbs, the categorial properties of adjectives, and general theories of GB, such as Projection Principle and Theta-theory. The lexical-thematic properties of verbs that are encoded in the lexicon are; whether their arguments are directly or indirectly assigned theta-roles and whether each thetarole is optionally or obligatorily assigned. In conclusion, I will suggest that the APF of Levin and Rappaport may be favorably adopted in our school grammar for the following reasons. Firstly, the both types of APF rules presuppose their unique lexical entries of verbs respectively. This means that the accuracy of the lexical information of verbs should be considered in adopting a favorable APF. Since theta-role theory concerning the definition or criterion of theta-roles is not yet firmly established, the APF dependent upon the lexicon in which theta-roles are imperfectly specified and labeled is naturally considered to be defective and unsatisfactory. But the lexical representations of verbs by Levin and Rappaport show that the lexical-thematic properties of verbs can be fairly accurately represented in the lexicon (or in the dictionaries for us). Hence the APF of Livin and Rappaport is favorable. Secondly, the APF rules based on a particular theta-role for the external argument of the AP are found to lack the generality and thematic-constancy in AP constructions, especially those derived from the complement structures of dative and spray/load verbs with two internal arguments. But the internal argument of the verb that is externalized to be an argument of the AP can be invariably identified by the APF that depends on the lexical-thematic properties of verbs and the categorial properties of adjectives. Hence the APF of Levin and Rappaport is preferable. Lastly, the APF rules of any kind that rely only upon the lexical information of verbs are found unable to account for all the grammatical or ungrammatical structures of the AP. Hence I am to accept Levin and Rappaport's conclusion that the problem of identifying the external argument of an AP or of accounting for the grammaticality of AP structures is determined by the interaction of the lexical-thematic properties of verbs, the general properties of adjectives, and other general principles of grammar, such as the Projection Principle and the theta-criterion.

Lidocaine과 Propofol이 마우스에서 림프구세포증식에 미치는 효과

        정수룡,김종선,김광혁 고신대학교의과대학 2007 고신대학교 의과대학 학술지 Vol.22 No.1

Background : The possibility that anesthesia may alter the course of an infection has been under consideration for more a century. Alterations have been found in every component of the immune response during anesthesia and surgery. In this work we have investigated the effect of lidocaine and propofol on the stimulatory proliferative effects of these agents on splenocytes of mice. Methods : Mice splenocytes were incubated with anesthetic agents and concanvalin A (Con A) to observe the effects on cell proliferation. Results : We detected a little anesthesia-associated changes in splenocytes proliferation. In vitro lymphoproliferation in the splenocytes exposed with lidocaine was decreased in comparison with the control, but on the other hand it exposed with propofol was increased. Also, when the cells were preincubated with lidocaine or propofol before addition of Con A, the effect of lymphoproliferation inhibition was detected. Conclusion : These findings suggest that lidocaine and propofol interfere with lymphoproliferation. This may explain the clinically well-recognized disturbance of human immunity after surgery and anesthesia.
