A new hypothesis for fatigue crack propagation under strain controlled cycling conditions is presented. The analysis is based on the assumption that an existing crack propagates that distance per cycle over which the strain exceeds the fracture strain. This results in a logari-thmic crack growth law of the type 1nC=F(ε??)N where the function of the total strain range includes a dependence on the strain-hardening exponent of the material. It is also shown that the well-known relationship between cycles to failure and strain range, N????=const, is predicted by the analysis. Finally, the applicability of the formal treatment to crack propagation under cyclic stress conditions is indicated.
