본 연구는 우리나라 성씨제도의 특징이라고 할 수 있는 本貫姓氏制가 어떤 과정을 거쳐 성립되었는지, 그리고 그 배경이 무엇이었는지를 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 본관성씨제의 성립 과정과 배경을 살펴보기 위해서는 고려시대 성씨의 확산과정과 本貫制의 변화에 대하여 먼저 고찰할 필요가 있었다. 漢式 성씨의 수용과 확산은 이미 삼국시대부터 시작되었지만 본격적인 성씨의 확산은 羅末麗初 시기를 거쳐 고려의 통치체제가 확립되는 것과 더불어 진행되었는데, 성씨의 확산 양상은 중앙과 지방이 다소 차이가 있었다. 성씨의 확산과 별개로 본관제는 民의 流亡이 극심하고 통치체제가 정비되지 않은 상황에서 지방의 지배층(豪族)을 포섭하여 안정된 收取構造를 확보하기 위한 것이었다. 그러나 12세기 이후 사회변동으로 본관제의 지배질서가 균열되면서 본관제의 본래의 기능은 소멸하고 이후 본관은 姓貫으로서만 기능하게 되었다. 중앙 관인층이 문벌귀족으로 성장함에 따라 望族意識이 생겨나고 자신들의 성씨를 차별하기 위해 본관을 성씨와 竝稱하기 시작하였다. 이런 연유로 선행 연구자들은 본관성씨제의 성립을 문벌귀족과 연결시켜왔다. 그러나 본관성씨제의 성립배경은 稱姓의 확산과정 자체에서 찾아야 할 것이다. 문벌귀족이 자신들의 성씨를 구별하기 위해 본관을 병칭한 것은 동일한 姓字를 사용하는 성씨, 즉 同姓異本이 그만큼 많았다는 것이며 왜 그렇게 많은 동성이본이 생겨날 수밖에 없었는가에 대하여 주목해야할 것이기 때문이다. 나말여초 시기 칭성의 확산과정을 살펴보면 특히 自稱姓의 경우를 볼 때 칭성이 임의로 이루어졌음을 알 수 있다. 칭성의 任意性은 改姓이 쉽게 이루어진 예를 통해서도 잘 알 수 있으며, 성씨가 점차 일반화되어감에 따라 성씨는 점차 유명 漢姓에 집중되고 稀姓이나 僻姓은 사라지면서 수많은 동성이본이 출현하게 된 것임을 알 수 있다. This study is to research for how the family origin and name which is a feature of the family name system in Goryeo Period formed, and what the background was. To research for the process and the background of the forming the family origin and name, it is needed to study the spreading process of the family name and the change of the family origin in Goryeo Period. It has been already started from the Three Kingdom Period to accept and spread the Chinese family name, but the active spreading of the family name was made progress in establishing of the government system in Goryeo Period. The spreading of the family name was different between the capital and the provinces. In a situation that the people's running away was many and the government system was not built up, the family origin was on the purpose of assuring the stable taxing system. But through social change since the 12th century, the ruling order was broken. The original function of the family origin disappeared and the family origin came to be used by its meaning only. As Goryeo Period got stable and the government officials became Munbeol(門閥) nobility, the clan consciousness was born, and the family origin was ranked with the family name for distinction of their own family name. Thus pre-researchers have linked the forming of the family origin and name with the 'Munbeol' nobility. However the forming background of the family origin and name should be sought for the spreading process of the family name itself. Because what 'Munbeol' nobility ranked the family origin with the family name for distinction of their own family name means that the family names which used the same name, same name-different origin(同姓異本), were many. And because we should focus on why so many same name-different origins could not but from. In the period of closing in Shilla through opening in Goryeo, we can look for the spreading process of naming the family. Especially, through the self naming family name, we can see it was made randomly. Naming family name randomly is well shown by renaming frequently. As the family name had been generalized, it gradually focused on Chinese family name, unknown or reluctant family name disappeared. Thus many same name-different origins came into emerge.
