중국 디자인 교육의 발전과정은 맹아기(1840-1949), 창건기(1949-1977), 발전기 (1978-현재)로 나눌 수 있다. 중국 디자인 교육의 발전은 근대 중국의 학제 개혁에 따라 그 체계를 완성해갔다. 공예교육에서 출발하여 신식미술교육으로 발전하였고, 근대학제가 만들어지면서 초등교육에서 고등교육에 이르는 전 과정에서 공예 디자인 교육이 진행될 수 있었다. 중국 정부의 근대학제 건설은 중국 근대 디자인 교육을 발전시키는 핵심동력이 되었다. 중국 디자인 교육은 서양미술사상과, 5·4 신문화 운동의 중국 미술혁명 사상으로부터도 영향을 받았다. 1840년부터 1949년 신 중국의 건립까지 중국의 디자인교육은 엄청난 사회변혁과 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 그 교육체계를 만들어왔다. 역사적 질곡 과매 시기 많은 시행착오와 혼란 속에서도, 짧은 시간의 근대화 과정과 서구 문화의 급속한 유입을 통해, 제도적인 형태의 근대 디자인 교육의 외형은 비교적 빠른 시간 동안 그 형태를 만들 수 있었다. The China`s design education has been developed over three periods, namely, the germinal stage (1840-1949), the foundational stage (1949-1977), and the developmental stage (1978). It has become systematic as the modern China`s reformation of the school system. It started with the industrial education and developed into the up-to-date art education, and later the industrial and the design education were taught in public education from elementary to high school, as the modern school system established. The system became the core dynamic that boosted the development of China`s modern design education. China`s design education has been influenced by the western arts and by the revolution in China`s art from Xin Wenhua Yundong (New Culture Movement). It has been developed in the significant social changes and a historical vortex from 1840 to 1949, to the foundation of the new China. Despite of the historical fetters, failures, and chaos, through the short period of the modernization and the rapid introduction of western cultures, the appearance of the modern design education of the institutional form was able to take root in a comparably short period of time.
