        Linguistic Representations of Korean Immigrant English in North American Media Space : An Analysis of Appa s English in Kim s Convenience

With the increasing importance of the mass media in social life and the linguistic changes it incurs, sociolinguistic research on linguistic representations in cinematic discourse has been increasing recently. Situated within this growing body of emerging scholarship in sociolinguistics, this study examines how Korean immigrant English is represented in a Canadian TV sitcom, Kim’s Convenience . Drawing on the perspective that linguistic performances in fictional discourse serve as resources for sociolinguistic styling and characterization, this paper investigates how the linguistic representations of Korean immigrant English contribute to authenticating the character of a middle-aged male Korean immigrant called Appa in the TV series. For this purpose, Appa s English used throughout the TV series first season (13 episodes) was analyzed at the phonological, syntactic, lexical, thematic, and semiotic levels. The analysis revealed that each linguistic level shows distinct but concerted efforts regarding the authentication of Appa as a Korean immigrant. The phonological features of his English effectively share those of Korean English, whereas the syntactic representations are characteristic of a simple register. The lexical, thematic, and semiotic representations additionally reinforce Appa s “Koreanness” through the sitcom s integration of topics and images related to Korean culture.

        토픽모델링을 이용한 대학생 해외연수 담론 분석

        The interest in text mining is recently increasing in the humanities and social sciences. Using a topic-modeling technique, this study analyzed a corpus of study abroad applications to explore a discursive field of study abroad. By doing so, this project finds the ways in which the new text analysis technique can contribute to the methodology of discourse analysis. For this purpose, 4,585 applications for a variety of undergraduate study-abroad programs were collected and sorted out into the corpora of successful and unsuccessful applications. The topic-modeling results show that generated topics generally match the discourses and themes that the existing research of study abroad have considered so far. The comparison of the results between successful and unsuccessful applications reveals that the former tends to exhibit a set of more clearly defined topics and use abstract and generalized words to describe actions engaging with study abroad. This study suggests that the topic-modeling technique can be a useful discourse-analytic tool as it helps understand a broad thematic and discursive terrain in a large size of textual data. This paper also discusses how traditional discourse analysis methods can contribute to addressing methodological limitations in text mining techniques.

        언어교육에서의 번역기 사용: 신물질주의적 탐색

        As the quality of machine translation improves, scholarly and pedagogical investigations on the roles and applications of machine translation in language classrooms continue to grow. The primary focus of such research is frequently concerned with the tool’s feasibility and usefulness in connection to language learning. However, in recent years, new proposals in the social sciences have emerged to redefine materials and objects beyond their long-held passive and static nature. Notable among them are a series of posthuman theories, including new materialism, which argue that the traditional understanding of matter and tools fails to adequately reflect their ontological position of acting and becoming by reducing them to objects for human use. This article proposes new onto-epistemologies of machine translation in language learning, based on recent theoretical discourse in new materialism research. To this goal, new materialist theories in regard to objects, machines, and devices are reviewed. Also, works of applied linguists, Alastair Pennycook, Kelleen Toohey, and Suresh Canagarajah, who have pioneered the new materialist turn, are introduced. In light of potentiality, performativity, and assemblage, this study presents different viewpoints on machine translation in language classrooms. Finally, this article calls for naturalistic and ethnographic research to advance a new materialist understanding of machine translation.

        이공계특성화대학 학부생의 미국 대학 단기 해외연수 경험과 효과에 대한 인식

        이공계 대학생의 글로벌 역량 강화 방안으로 최근 다수 대학이 운영하는 해외연수 프로그램에 큰 비용과 자원이 투입됨에도 불구하고 교육 효과에 관한 체계적인 연구는 미흡하다. 본 논문은 이공계특성화대학인 D 대학의 학부생 해외연수 프로그램의 교육 효과를 연수참여생의 학습 경험과 그들이 인식하는 효과를 통해 탐색한다. 이를 위해 연수에 참여했던 학생을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사와 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여 동기와 연수 효과의 경우 전공 지식의 함양보다는 해외 대학 수학과 문화 경험이 더 주요했다. 둘째, 수업과 관련하여 학생들은 주로 수업에서 요구하는 활동을 수행하였다. 셋째, 수업 외 주요활동은 일상적인 생활과 여행이었는데, 여행을 통해 문제해결 능력과 리더십이 향상된 것으로 인식했다. 넷째, 인간관계 측면에서는 D 대학 동료들이 핵심 인적네트워크였으나, 일부는 수업과 문화체험 행사를 통해 외국인과 관계를 만들기도 하였다. 다섯째, 영어실력 부족으로 원활한 의사소통의 어려움이 있었지만, 현지에서 직접 부딪히며 영어 사용에 자신감이 향상되었다고 보았다. 본 연구의 결과를 종합해볼 때 현재 D 대학 해외연수 프로그램은 이문화 경험, 일상적 문화 접촉, 영어에 대한 자신감 향상과 관련하여 유의미한 교육 효과를 내고 있다. Even though many universities have recently developed and implemented study abroad programs to enhance students’ global competence, few investigations have been done on students’ experience and assessment of the programs. Using questionnaire and focus-group interview methods, this paper explores how undergraduate students in a STEM-specialized university perceive their learning experience and educational effects of a short-term study abroad in U.S. universities. The findings are as follows. First, most students were motivated to participate in studying abroad because of their desire to experience overseas college life and culture. Second, students’ responses to classroom activities show that they mostly carried out the tasks required in the courses. Third, the dominant types of students’ outside-class activities included everyday tasks and travels. In particular, they reported that travels helped to enhance problem-solving and leadership skills. Fourth, students’ social networks were mostly formed with students of their home university. However, some succeeded in building relationships with local and international students in the host universities in class and through cultural events. Fifth, even though students struggled with communicating with locals due to different types of language barrier, they indicated that they could improve confidence in English speaking as they used English in everyday and authentic contexts. These findings suggest that the study abroad program has helped students to improve competence relating to everyday intercultural sensitivity and confidence in English.

        토픽모델링 기법을 이용한 이공계 대학생의 단기 해외연수 경험 분석

        대학 국제화 기조와 함께 많은 대학이 다양한 형태의 해외연수 프로그램을 시행하고 있다. 본 논문은 학생들의 해외연수 경험과 평가를 체계적으로 이해하고자 참여 학생의 연수 결과보고서를 분석한다. 이를 위해 미국대학 단기 해외연수에 참가한 이공계특성화대학 학부생 175명의 연수 결과보고서를 토픽모델링 기법으로 분석하여 연수 경험에 대한 주제 지도를 파악해보았다. 추출된 토픽은 크게 문화와 학업으로 범주화되었고, 전자에는 문화간 의사소통, 인간관계, 일상생활, 여행, 문화체험이, 후자에는 UCB 학업, JHU 학업, 과학 관련 수업, 수업 정보, 수업 활동이 포함되었다. 두 가지 범주를 매개하는 키워드로는 수업, 학생, 영어, 시간, 생각이 추출되었다. 토픽모델링 결과를 선행연구와 비교하여 연수 참가 학생의 경험을 다면적으로 조망한다. 또한, 담론분석방법으로서의 토픽모델링의 가능성과 한계에 대해서 논의한다. With the internationalization of higher education, many universities have been designing and implementing various types of study abroad programs to promote students’ global sensitivity and competitiveness. By analyzing students’ post-journey reports on study-abroad activities and evaluation, this article aims to understand their perceived experience and educational effects of a study abroad program. For this purpose, this study collected 175 reports from the students at a STEM-specialized university who participated in its short-term study-abroad program hosted by U.S. universities, and analyzed the corpus of report texts using a topic-modeling method. The analysis shows that generated topics can be divided into two categories: culture and study. The former category includes intercultural communication, human relationship, everyday life, tourism, and firsthand cultural experience, whereas the topics in the latter category are study at UCB, study at JHU, science-related courses, course information, and classroom activities. The keywords connecting these two categories are class, student, English, time, and idea. The semantic map resulting from the generated topics and keywords were compared with findings of previous research to gain multi-dimensional and comprehensive understandings of students’ study-abroad experience. The potentials and limitations of topic-modeling as a tool for discourse analysis are also discussed.
