The Glycolytic Phenotype is Correlated with Aggressiveness and Poor Prognosis in Invasive Ductal Carcinomas

Purpose: Glucose uptake and glycolytic metabolism are enhanced in cancer cells, and increased expression of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) has also been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate GLUT1 expression in human breast tissues and invasive ductal carcinomas. Methods: We used tissue microarrays consisting of normal breast tissue, ductal hyperplasia, ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and lymph node metastases. We examined GLUT1 expression in the microarrays by immunohistochemistry, reviewed the medical records and performed a clinicopathological analysis. Results: Membranous GLUT1 expression was observed in normal and tumor cells. GLUT1 expression was higher in ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and lymph node metastasis than in normal tissue and ductal hyperplasia (p=0.002). Of 276 invasive ductal carcinomas, 106 (38.4%) showed GLUT1 expression. GLUT1 expression was correlated with higher histologic grade (p<0.001), larger tumor size (p=0.025), absence of estrogen receptor (p<0.001), absence of progesterone receptor (p<0.001), and triple-negative phenotype (p<0.001). In univariate survival analysis, patients with GLUT1 expression had poorer overall survival and disease-free survival (p=0.017 and p=0.021, respectively, log-rank test). In multivariate survival analysis with the Cox proportional hazards model, GLUT1 expression was an independent prognostic factor of poorer overall survival and disease-free survival (p=0.017 and p=0.019, respectively). Conclusion: GLUT1 expression seems to play an important role in malignant transformation, and the glycolytic phenotype in invasive ductal carcinoma may indicate aggressive biological behavior and a worse prognosis.

Parotid Gland Carcinosarcoma with Osteosarcoma as a Sarcomatous Component: A Case Report with Fine Needle Aspiration Cytologic Findings

Carcinosarcoma of the salivary glands is a rare malignant tumor showing both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Herein, we present a carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland in a 67-year-old man consisting of osteosarcoma and adenocarcinoma components with fine needle aspiration cytological findings. The tumor was composed predominantly of osteosarcoma and small areas of adenocarcinomatous components and a hyalinized nodule reminiscent of pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor showed infiltrative growth features with perineural, lymphatic, and vascular invasion. Despite postoperative adjuvant radiation therapy, multiple metastatic lesions occurred in the both lungs 5 months after surgery. As salivary gland carcinosarcoma has been known to demonstrate highly aggressive behavior, an accurate pathological diagnosis is prerequisite for appropriate treatment.

Castleman’s Disease of the Renal Sinus Presenting as a Urothelial Malignancy: A Brief Case Report

Castleman’s disease is a rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder that frequently affects lymph nodes of the mediastinal thorax and the neck. It very rarely affects the renal sinus. We report a case of Castleman’s disease arising in the renal sinus in a 64-year-old man. The patient visited the hospital with the chief complaint of hematuria. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a homogeneous mass in the sinus of the left kidney, radiologically interpreted as a malignant urothelial tumor. Subsequently, nephroureterectomy was performed, after which microscopic examination of the specimen revealed a diffuse lymphoproliferative lesion with reactive lymphoid follicles of various sizes and prominent plasma cell infiltration of interfollicular spaces, highlighted by immunohistochemical staining for CD138. The lesion was diagnosed as Castleman’s disease of the plasma cell type. Although preoperative diagnosis of Castleman’s disease is difficult and the incidence is exceedingly rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal sinus tumors.

Cytologic Features and BRAF Mutation of Hyalinizing Trabecular Adenoma of the Thyroid - A Case Report with Review of the Literature -

A hyalinizing trabecular adenoma (HTA) is a rare benign thyroid tumor of follicular epithelial cell origin with a trabecular-alveolar growth pattern and marked intratrabecular hyalinization. The cytological and histological features of HTA are very similar to those of papillary and medullary carcinomas of the thyroid. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis of HTA is important to avoid unnecessary and potentially harmful management of patients. However, the results of BRAF gene mutation analysis shown by many studies are distinctly different between HTAs and papillary thyroid carcinomas. Herein, we describe a rare case of HTA of the thyroid in a 49-year-old female and consider its characteristic cytological features and BRAF gene mutation analysis results with a brief review of the literature.

從古代書院看當代中國社會

宋代 이래로 新儒學은 민간 사회에 가볍게 볼 수 없는 문화적 영향을 끼쳤다. 유가학자들은 유학을 弘揚하고, 書堂과 精舍 등 각종 學府를 설립하고, 최종적으로는 書院을 설립하는 데에까지 이르렀다. 書院의 역사는 唐代까지 소급할 수 있는데, 開元時期에 설립된 麗正書院과 集賢書院 등이 서원의 효시가 된다. 그렇지만 본격적인 도서관의 기능 이외에 강학의 역할을 첨가한 學府의 기능을 한 서원을 건립한 것은 北宋代에 이르러서인데, 白鹿桐書院이 처음이다. 이후 서원문화는 중국과 동아시아 사회에 많은 영향을 끼쳤으며, 시대에 따라 절절 한 모습으로 변모하였다. 한 민족, 국가 또는 지역 사회의 발전은 경제적·정치적 발전뿐만 아니라 문화적 번영도 이루어야 한다. 현대사회의 문화적 번영을 이루는데 있어서 전통 사상이 많은 도움을 줄 수 있으며, 특히 고대 서원으로부터 많은 시사점을 얻을 수 있다. 필자가 생각하기에 향후 동방문화는 서양문화가 갖는 天人 대립의 문제점을 일정 부분 해결할 수 있으리라고 본다. 그리고 향후 동양의 문화는 반드시 宋代 張橫渠가 제창한 유가의 원대한 이상, 즉 "천지를 위해 마음을 세우고, 백성을 위해 명을 세우고, 지난 聖人들의 끊어진 학문을 잇고, 만세의 태평 세대를 연다" (爲天地立心, 爲生民立命, 爲往聖繼絶學, 爲萬世開太平)는 목표를 성취할 수 있을 것이다.

Handball選手의 柔軟性運動이 瞬發力에 미치는 影響

Before and after the 17 Handball players for this study took the Flexbility exercise along with the Reinforcement sports each 20 minutes for 5 months. I analyzed the corelation between before and after the tests of the 4 kinds of Flexbility exercise and the 4 kinds of Power exercise. The conclusions are as follows : 1. The players exellent in the Flexbility exercise got the high scone in the measurement of power. As the Flexbility founded in all the sports are exellent, the exercise ability are exeelent. 2. In the corelation between 100m running and the 4 kinds of the Flexbility, the corelation in the 1st maasurement result and the 2nd measurement result shows the reverse corelation. 3. In the 1st measurement result corelation, the corelation between the Side Trunk Flexion shows 0.84. It shows the high corelation. In the 2nd measurement results corelation, the corelation between the Sargent Jump and the Side Trunk Flexion shows 0.82. It shows high. 4. The corelation between the Stand Broad Jump and The Trunk Extension shows 0.69 in the 1st measurement, and 0.68 in the 2nd measurement. It shows the high corelation. Te get the support exercise in the Trunk Extension is effective to reinforce the Stand Broad Jump that are the measurement of power. 5. In the corelation between the Throwing and the 4 kinds of the Flexbility, the Throwing and the Trunk Extension shows 0.56 in the 1st measurement and 0.61 in the 2nd measurement. It shows the highest corelation. On the other hand the corelation between the Throwing and the Trunk Flexsion shows 0.34, and the corelation between the Throwing and the Trunk Twisting shows 0.36. In mathematics education, teaching-learning activity can be divided largely into the understanding the mathematical concepts, derivation of principles and laws, acquirement of the mathematical abilities. We utilize various media, teaching tools, audio-visual materials, manufacturing materials for understanding mathematical concepts. But sometimes we cannot define or explain correctly the concepts as well as the derivation of principles and laws by these materials. In order to solve the problem we can use the computer. In this paper, character and movement state of various quadratic function graph types can be used. Using the computers is more visible than other educational instruments like blackboards, O.H.Ps., etc. Then, students understand the mathematical concepts and the correct quadratic function graph correctly. Consquently more effective teaching-learning activity can be done. Usage of computers is the best method for improving the mathematical abilities because computers have functions of the immediate reaction, operation, reference and deduction. One of the important characters of mathematics is accuracy, so we use computers for improving mathematical abilities. This paper is about the program focused on the part of "the quadratic function graph", which exists in mathematical curriculum the middle school. When this program is used for students, it is expected the following educational effect. 1. Students will have positive thought by arousing interests of learning because this program is composed of pictures, animations with effectiveness of sound. 2. This program will cause students to from the mathematical concepts correctly. 3. By visualizing the process of drawing the quadratic function graph, students understand the quadratic function graph structually. 4. Through the feedback, the recognition ability of the trigonometric function can be improved. 5. It is possible to change the teacher-centered instruction into the student-centered instruction. For the purpose of increasing the efficiencies and qualities of mathmatics education, we have to seek the various learning-teaching methods. But considering that no computer can replace the teacher's role, tearchers have to use the CIA program carefully.
