식민지 시대 한국 여성들은 가부장제 아래의 현모양처라고 하는 전통적 여성상과는 현저하게 다른 여성상의 변화를 경험했다. 그것은 남성 중심의 가부장제를 극복하기 위해 여성으로서의 자신의 자의식과 정체성을 어떻게 형성할 것인가 하는 문제와 더불어 피식민지 조선의 국민으로서 자신을 어떻게 시민적 정치적 주체로서 형성해 갈 것인가의 문제 사이에서 상호 충돌하기도 하고 때로는 연대하며 시행착오를 거듭하는 경험이었다. 장선희의 경우 민족 문제와 여성 문제를 상호 상승적으로 승화시킬 수 있도록 해 준 가교는 자수의 세계였다. 자수를 통해 그녀는 자신의 아픔뿐만 아니라 조선 민족이 겪는 동시대의 아픔을 예술로 승화시키면서 이 엄혹한 시대를 살아 낸 것이다. 이러한 여성 지식인의 삶은 민족 문제와 성문제 그리고 계급 문제 등으로 착종되어 아직도 실험을 계속하고 있는 오늘날의 한국 여성들에게도 적지않는 격려와 통찰력을 제공할 것이다. During the colonial period, Korean women experienced a womanhood significantly different from the traditional `good wife and wise mother` ideal of women under the patriarchy. Their experience was a constant trial and error that emerged from alternating conflicts and alignments between, in one hand, the question of how to construct the self-identification as a woman that can overcome the patriarchy, and on the other, the question of constructing the self as an active political citizen while being of the colonial Chosun. For Jang, the world of embroidery laid a bridge between her problems of ethnicity and femininity and allowed for her to solve both in sublimation. Through embroidery, she not only transcended her pain but also the pain of our people into an art, while beautifully living this cruel period. Jang`s life brings much encouragement and insight to Korean women of today who still experiments with entangled identities of nationality, gender, and status.
