Vol.17 No.1

The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.

Vol.17 No.6

Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. It is well known that volume expansion due to the phase transformation could influence on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. For this purpose, the analysis is carried out in two regions. i.e., heating and cooling, because the variation of material properties following a phase transformation in cooling is different in comparison with the case in heating, even at the same temperature. The variation of material properties following phase transformation is considered by the adjustment of specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient, and the distribution of residual stress in analysis is compared with that of experiment by previous study. consequently, in this study, simplified numerical procedures considering phase transformation, which based on a commercial finite element package was established through comparing with the experimental data of residual stress distribution by other researcher. To consider the phase transformation effect on residual stress relaxation, the transition of mechanical and thermal property such as thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat capacity was found by try and error method in this analysis.

Vol.19 No.5

In the previous study, temperature monitoring of case about shrinkage fit process was performed and heat transfer model was developed in detail by feedback and tuning among monitoring result, process investigation, and analysis result. The gap element in contact between case and core was effectively used in analysis model. In present study, following things are performed to solve deformation of case due to shrinkage fit process on the basis of previous result. Above all, mechanical material properties of case are measured by case specimen for deformation analysis considering weldment of case. Deformation of case before and after shrinkage fit process is measured, too. Three dimensional deformation model is developed by the comparison and inspection between these experimental data and analysis results. Deformation analysis is simulated with the result of heat transfer analysis, in other words, non-coupled analysis is used. Finally the countermeasure for deformation is brought up through those.

There have been many problems due to deformation in industry field. Especially, it is severe in parts with small size and thin thickness and in products that must have excellent airtightness and anti-noise. The countermeasures for this deformation in field have mainly been dependent on the rule of trial and error by operator's experience because of productivities. Systematic study about this product with deformation is also insufficient that deformation is complex problem with shape, size, material of product, joining method and conditions, etc.. It is efficient to apply CAE technique without influence on productivity to this problem. There is, however much difference between the result analyzed by CAE and appearances in working field because of the insufficiency of communication between simulator and worker and of sensing data for boundary condition in analysis. In this study, to solve this deformation problem, we intend to make a simulation model that is adapted from working conditions by tuning and feedback between sensing data and simulation results. This paper include temperature monitoring and make a heat transfer model using sensing data in product as previous step for deformation analysis. The heat transfer analysis of shrinkage fit process is considerably difficult due to contact heat transfer between case and core. To solve this contact problem, gap element is used in present study.

In the previous study, the countermeasure for welding deformation of bracket tilt is through up through experimental inspection for total process including welding process. For completeness of systematic examination of parts having sensitivity on welding deformation, the comparison and feedback between the result through simulation of welding process and experimental data is needed. In other words, it is necessary to control welding deformation that construct the prediction system for welding deformation through comparison and tuning with experimental data. In the present study, the application of FEA on welding process of bracket tilt with susceptibility to deformation is made and deformation behavior through change of welding sequence is focused on. It is used to improve the exactness of deformation analysis that three dimensional analysis for moving heat source, activated and deactivated bead element, and volume heat flux etc.

Vol.16 No.5

This study aimed at he experimental and finite element analytic investigation of the effect of preheating on he residual stress of weldment. In this study, an autogenous arc welding was used on type 304 stainless steel and MARC as F.E.M. common code was utilized in analysis The analyses include transient and moving heat source and thermal properties as function of temperature. During welding, the thermal cycles of four locations in the weldment were recorded to investigate of the behavior of thermal stress and residual stress. The experimental and analytic results had good coincidence and show that there are two factors influencing the formation of welding residual stress in preheat process. One is the elevation of welding equilibrium temperature and the other is the increase of amount of heat input. The former decrease welding residual stress and the latter increase welding residual stress. Therefore, the cumulative effects result in the welding residual stress not being improved significantly with preheating in 304 stainless steel.

The bracket tilt among automobile parts is weld parts which construct the column assembly bracket tilt of equipments and accurate dimension after welding is more essential than weldment strength. By the way, it is insufficient that systematic study about this parts which have an importance on welding deformation. The reason is that welding deformation is complex problem with shape, size, material of parts and welding sequence, conditions etc. For reduction and removal of welding deformation, therefore, it is necessary that the security of welding deformation data and systematic examination about equipment, costs, work environment, manufacturing process etc. It is all the better that the prediction of welding deformation using simulation of welding process by FEA is supplemented. In this study, the countermeasure for this welding deformation of bracket tilt is brought up through experimental inspection before the choice of the optimum welding conditions with minimum welding deformation by simulation of welding process.

Local & Global

Vol.22 No.6

Some industrial steel structures are composed by components linked by several welding joints to constitute an assembly. The main interest of assembly simulation is to evaluate the global distortion of welded structure. The general method, thermo-elasto-plastic analysis, leads to excessive model size and computation time. In this study, a simplified method called "Local and Global approach" was developed to break down this limit and to provide a accurate solution for distortion. Local and global approach is composed of 3 steps; 1) Local simulation of each welding joint on a dedicated mesh (usually very fine due to high thermal gradients), taking into account for the non linearity of the material properties and the moving heat source. 2) Transfer to the global model of the effects of the welding joints by projection of the plastic strain tensors. 3) Elastic simulation to determine final distortions in global model. The welding deformation test for mock-up structure was performed to verify this approach. The predicted welding distortion by this approach had a good agreement with experiment results.

Arc-spot welding is generally used in joining of precise parts such as case and core in electric compressor. It is important to control joining deformation in electric compressor because clearance control of micrometer order is needed for excellent airtightness and anti-nose. The countermeasures for this deformation in field have mainly been dependent on rule of try and error by operator's experience because of productivities. For control this deformation problem without influence on productivities, development of exact simulation model should be needed. In this study, on the basis of previous study, the analysis model io predict deformation of precise order in arc-spot welded structure with non-uniform stiffness is brought up through feedback and tuning between monitoring data and analysis results. For this, deformation monitoring system was built and boundary condition considering mechanical melting temperature was applied.
