Does Kinesio Taping Improve Vertical Jumping Performance?

        임형원 대한물리치료학회 2016 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.28 No.5

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of kinesio taping (KT) on vertical jumping performance. Methods: Young women (n=24) performed vertical jumping under three conditions: kinesio taping, placebo taping, and no taping. All tapes were applied to both quadriceps and the gastrocnemius of the subjects. Vertical jump height and power were measured using an OptoGait, and the non-parametric Friedman test was used to identify differences between conditions. Results: No significant differences in maximum jump height or peak jump power between were observed between taping conditions. Conclusion: The results showed that KT did not facilitate muscle performance by generating higher jumping power or yielding a better jumping performance. As the functional performance is related to muscle strength, this finding may be explained by the fact that KT has no effects on muscle strength.

Evidence-Based Physical Therapy for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: Literature Review

        임형원 대한물리치료학회 2019 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.31 No.4

Most athletes with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures undergo a surgical ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and rehabilitation. On the other hand, controversy still exists because neither a reconstruction nor rehabilitation have been proven to be superior in the management of ACL injury. This study reviewed the success rates of interventions to provide recommendations for the optimal management after an ACL injury. One of the most important considerations after an ACL injury is the timing and type of intervention. At the early stages, which involve the loss of volume and strength of quadriceps femoral muscle, weight bearing (closed kinetic chain) exercises with pain management followed by high velocity resistance exercises in an open kinetic chain environment are recommended to improve the quadriceps function. After that, it is important to apply intensive isokinetic exercise with a lower extension rate. In this case, it is important to apply overload to the muscles and to simultaneously lead the co-contraction of the hamstrings. Standards are essential because the timing and type of interventions are crucial to prevent re-injury and complications, such as osteoarthritis, as well as to confirm the successful outcome of the treatment. Different interventions recommended for ACL damage have yet to reach consensus. Further studies will be needed to observe the effects of the intervention through multidisciplinary approaches.

상상운동이 기능적 발목관절 불안정성 환자의 하퇴 근육 근수축 개시시간 및 발목손상 척도에 미치는 영향

        임형원,Lim, Hyoung-Won 대한물리치료학회 2012 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.24 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of motor imagery on the onset time of the leg muscle and ankle injury score of patients with functional ankle instability. Methods: The study included 16 patients with ankle instability after their ankle sprains. Motor imagery was performed 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The onset time of leg muscles was measured by using the surface EMG in one leg standing position on tibialis anterior, peroneous longus and medial, lateral gastrocnemius. The pre- and post-intervention was measured by using the ankle injury score. Data was analyzed by a paired t-test. Results: The onset time was reduced but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). The order of muscle recruitment was changed. Anke injury score increased significantly after motor imagery (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that motor imagery was effective by showing delayed onset time of peroneal muscle in patients with functional ankle instability. In future studies, various conditions and disorders should all be considered for the effective analysis of motor imagery.

        임형원 ( Hyung Won Lim ) 대한물리의학회 2012 대한물리의학회지 Vol.7 No.2

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Vojta therapy on Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM) and Selective Voluntary Motor Control (SVMC) in children with Spastic diplegia, Methods During this experiment, the subject of four children diagnosed with spastic diplegia was tested using ABA design for Single-subject Experimental Research Design. The procedure consisted of baseline, intervention and follow-up phase which was held thirty minutes each for three times a week for a total of 24 times. Gross motor function was measured using GMFM and selective voluntary motor control was measured using SCALE. Results According to this study, the gross motor function and selective voluntary motor control of all subjects were improved from their intervention phase to their baseline phase. During the follow phase which the intervention was removed, the ability that was enhanced during the prior phases was still either maintained or only reduced slightly. Conclusion The Vojta therapy used on children diagnosed with spastic diplegia was effective on both GMFM and SVMC. In other words, the therapy was effective on coordination. However, this study is difficult to be generalized due to the insufficient number of subject. In further studies, it will be necessary to increase the number of trials with a control group in order to generalize the effectiveness of Vojta therapy.

Comparison of Muscle Activities of Trunk and Lower Limb during Bow and Squat Exercises

        손지원,임형원 대한물리치료학회 2016 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.28 No.2

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to examine muscle activities of trunk and lower limb during squat and 108 bows exercises and to provide objective data for establishing a training method for improving muscle strength of trunk and lower limb. Methods: Twenty normal healthy subjects participated in this study. Each exercise was divided into five periods. Muscle activities of trunk and lower limb in each period of both 108 bows and squat exercises were measured and analyzed by independent t-test. Results: In starting, mid-flexion, mid-extension, and end period muscle activities obtained from 108 bows exercise were significantly higher than those from squat exercise. However, in the final flexion period, muscle activities of multifidus, elector spinae, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and tibialis anterior from squat exercise were significantly higher than those from bow exercise. Conclusion: In this study, high muscle activities in most muscles of trunk and lower limb were observed from all periods of 108 bows exercise except the final flexion period. Therefore, it is likely that 108 bows exercise rather than squat exercise is more suitable for high strength exercise to improve muscle strength of trunk and lower limb and thus will be applicable for strengthening muscles of trunk and lower limb of patients.

Recovery of an Injured Corticospinal Tract in a Patient With Infarction on the Corona Radiata

        이숙,임형원,여상석 대한물리치료학회 2015 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.27 No.1

Purpose: Many studies have attempted to elucidate the motor recovery mechanisms of stroke. In the current study, we report on a patientwith infarction who showed recovery of an injured corticospinal tract (CST), using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Methods: A 20-year-old male presented with severe paralysis of the left extremities following an infarction in the right corona radiateand basal ganglia. The patient showed good motor recovery as much as being able to manipulate object using his left hand and couldwalk independently on stairs at 9 months after onset. Results: At 1 month after onset, the right CST showed decreased fiber volume due to the partial injury at the level of the corona radiate, and no (motor evoked potential) MEP was evoked from the right hemisphere. By contrast, the results at 9 months showed increased fibervolume of the right CST and the amplitude of MEP had improved to normal range on TMS. Conclusion: These results suggest that the severely injured right CST and MEP amplitude had been recovered during 9 months. Therefore, this result has important implications for brain plasticity and brain rehabilitation in patients with infarction.

        백기현,임형원 대한물리치료학회 2019 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.31 No.4

Purpose: This study examined the effects of a spiral elastic band for the walking function on patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Twenty one chronic stroke patients were recruited and divided randomly into the experimental group and control group. Both groups performed mat exercises and gait training three times a week for four weeks, and gait training was applied to the experimental group with additional spinal elastic bands. Results: The results of this research were as follows. The 10MWT measurements showed that the velocities within and between the groups decreased significantly, and the results of TUG showed significant decreases in velocities after the interventions in both the control group and experimental group. On the other hand, there were no significant differences between the control and experimental group. The FRT measurements showed significantly increased stride lengths within and between the groups. The measurements of the stride length, stride velocity, cadence, and step length showed significant improvement within the groups, but there was no significant difference between the groups. The measurement of stance showed that the non-paralytic patients had a significant increase in the rates within the groups and a significant difference was observed between the groups. Conclusion: Spiral elastic bands are an effective intervention method for rehabilitation programs to enhance the walking function in the clinical field. A treatment needs to be developed for patients with walking problems due to various disorders by investigating the action mechanism of spiral elastic bands.
