I report here the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of a new C1-phosphonate analogue of UDP-GlcNAc as a potential inhibitor of OGT, an enzyme responsible for O-GlcNAc modification. The analogue was designed to mimic the transition state of the natural donor involved in the enzymatic reaction. However, the analogue showed somehow low activity as an inhibitor of OGT.
Cellular Uptake Properties of the Complex Derived from Quantum Dots and G8 Molecular Transporter

The biotin-attached G8 molecular transporter (5) was synthesized and used together with quantum dots in preparing the complexes (QD-MT). The QD-MT complexes were studied in terms of the cellular uptake and the internalization mechanism in live HeLa cells with the aid of various known endocytosis inhibitors. It has been concluded that the QD-MT complex is internalized largely by macropinocytosis. The mouse tissue distribution of the QD-MT complex by i.p. and i.v. routes showed some organ selectivity and a good ability to cross the BBB.

Objectives This study was designed to analyze the clinical studies on Mental retardation(MR) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). Methods For this study, we searched the clinical studies on MR, which had been published from 2003 to 2007, through web site CNKI(中國知識基礎設施工 http://www.cnki.net). There were 17 clinical studies and we focused on those studies. Results 1. In those Chinese studies, they used following words to describe Mental retardation; 小人弱智($xi\check{a}o\acute{e}rru\grave{o}zh\grave{i}$), 智能發育不全($zh\grave{i}n\acute{e}ngf\bar{a}y\grave{u}buqu\acute{a}n$), 智力低下($zh\grave{i}l\grave{i}d\bar{i}xi\grave{a}$), 精神發育遲滯($j\bar{i}ngsh\acute{e}f\bar{a}y\grave{u}ch\acute{i}zh\grave{i}$), 智能落后($zh\grave{i}n\acute{e}nglu\grave{o}h\grave{o}u$), 智能落后($zh\grave{i}n\acute{e}ngch\acute{i}hu\check{a}n$), 失天愚型患人($xi\bar{a}nti\bar{a}ny\acute{u}x\acute{i}nghu\grave{a}n'\acute{e}r$). 2. There were many kinds of TCM treatment methods for MR, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, electroacupunture, acupoint injection, Chuna therapy, and special education. And those TCM treatments methods showed higher efficacies in the treatment of MR compared with Western medicine. 3. Mental retardation was related with the deficiency of heart, kidney, liver, spleen(心虛, 腎虛, 肝虛, 脾虛) and the pathological mechanism of Phlegm(絹) and Blood stasis(慫沂)in the studies about the Bian Zheng-the types of differential diagnosis- of MR. 4. Most of studies used Intelligence Quotient(IQ) to assess the efficacy of TCM treatment of MR. And the duration of treatment, the degree of illness, the age of patient, and the cause of illness affected the prognosis of MR. Conclusions These results suggest that traditional medicine could be one of the useful treatments on MR. And these results could be used in the clinical practices and studies on MR in Korea.
소염약침 복합치료가 교통사고로 인한 초기 경추 편타 손상에 미치는 영향

Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of the acupuncture therapy in combination with Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on acute whiplash injury by traffic accident. And thermal change of posterior neck and shoulder was observed. Methods : The clinical study was conducted to 20 cases of acute whiplash injury patients who had been admitted in Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibusion, Woosuk University Hospital from December 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. In one group(test group), patients were treated with the acupuncture therapy in combination with Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy. And in the other group(control group), patients were treated with acupuncture therapy only. To estimate the efficacy of treatments, visual analog scale(VAS), neck disability index(NDI) of posterior neck pain were checked. And also thermal change of posterior neck and shoulder was observed by digital infrared thermographic imaging(DITI). Results : Both group represented effective improvement in VAS and NDI of posterior neck pain. Especially, test group is more effective than control group in VAS comparison, statistically. In test group, temperature of posterior neck and shoulder was decreased after treatments. But there was no significant difference between two groups on thermographic change. Conclusions : Through this study, Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy is considered to be effective for reducing pain in acute whiplash injury patients. And after Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy, temperature of posterior neck and shoulder show a tendency to decrease.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), an anticancer agent was covalently attached to the recently developed sorbitol-based G8transporter, and the conjugate (7) with FITC was found to have an affinity toward mitochondria and to readily cross BBB to gain an entry into mouse brain. Measured by IC_50, the conjugate (9) without the fluorophore showed enhanced cytotoxic activity toward two types of multidrug-resistant cell lines. These results strongly suggest that the sorbitol-based G8 transporter can be utilized as a good CNS delivery vector.
Development of stretchable electrode based on polymeric nanofiber and nanoparticle composites

Conductive electrodes and electric circuits that can remain active and electrically stable under large mechanical deformations are highly desirable for applications such as flexible displays, field-effect transistors, energy-related devices, smart clothing, and actuators. However, high-conductivity and stretchability seems to be mutually exclusive parameters. Here we introduce a conductive composite mat of silver nanoparticles and rubber fibers that allows the formation of highly stretchable circuits through a fabrication process that is compatible to any substrate and scalable for large-areas applications. Silver nanoparticle precursor is absorbed in electrospun poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS) rubber fibers and then converted into silver nanoparticles directly in the fibers mat. Percolation of the Ag nanoparticles inside the fibers leads to a high bulk conductivity which is preserved at large deformation.
