Vol.81 No.-
Looking through the concepts of curse generally used in the Joseon era, we can understand that curse is not depicted as what automatically makes someone unfortunate by practicing the magical formula. It is far more important that human agent should make the magical substances which are relevant to actualize his own purpose. Magical substances are made by such methods as insect-poison, quelling magic, possession by specter, plucking out life, pricking life, shamanic sorcery, cat ghost, and written charm. We can subsume all magical substances under the category of ‘curse-poison(蠱)’. Curse-poison is not only the instrument of curse, but also ghost substance which fulfills the wish of human agent and possesses the soul of human patient. This article discusses the concepts of curse imagined during the Joseon era, and intends to reconstruct the concept of ‘curse-poison’ in comparison with the anthropological category of witchcraft. It traces the precise meaning of the concepts of curse specified in Daminglü(大明律). Furthermore, by examining the historical records about shamanic sorcery, quelling magic, pricking life, and cat ghost, etc., we can understand that the concept of curse-poison is the matrix of different techniques of curse.
Vol.- No.32
The purpose of this article is to show what the possession of land means in religions, especially Korean new religions, and to understand why established religions try to hinder new religions from occupying land, or constructing religions buildings. Even if nonreligious buildings are being constructed by new religions, establised religions criticize this as the making of ‘sacred place,’ suspecting that it hides religious intention. When religious buildings are being constructed by new religions, it attracts more criticism. Then the expression of ‘sacred place’ is used negatively for indicating the material expansion of new religions. It might be that once new religions possess the land, this place will be contaminated by heretical religions and pseudoreligions. On the contrary, new religions very well know from experience how much difficult it is to build their own religious buildings. Though it is little more than a nonreligious building that has been contructed, therefore, new religions will take the religious pride that eventually they have erected their own building overcoming many social and religious obstructions. It is not so much nonreligious building that is sacred, but rather the feeling of religious victory arsing from the building process and history. Nonreligious building is invested with sacred history of overcoming social objections. This sacredness is the product of not religious but social context.
